Bye Kate!

MiddleClassProblem · 14/09/2016 21:00

Sad when I was young, I made Yorkshire just for fun, my pancakes were number one but those days are gone.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/09/2016 21:01

Monica on Extra Slice! I love her.

Why is Ed Balls on everything these days?

fourquenelles · 14/09/2016 21:02

MiddleClass excellent!

Kate has been making things that look good and taste bad. But this week it looked bad and tasted bad so she had to go.

Benjamina was a world ahead of the others in the show stopper.

emotionsecho · 14/09/2016 21:28

Benjamina knocked them all for six this week, well done to her. I've thought she's been consistently good over the weeks.

The savoury Yorkshire puddings were making me hungry, lots of really tempting fillings.

Lacy pancakes, hmm, I like a proper pancake to be drowned in lemon juice and a little bit of sugar.

I'm not a fan of Churros, too oily/fatty for me so some of those would have turned my stomach.

TheSpottedZebra · 14/09/2016 22:17

YES Middle !

Davros · 14/09/2016 23:27

Ed Balls obviously wants to be Michael Portillo!
In response to pp, filled Yorkshires are a thing, at least M&S have been doing them for years so they must be ok
Wahaca does very good churros but ask for the caramel sauce, it says chocolate on the menu but you can get it

FoxesOnSocks · 14/09/2016 23:58

I know the answer to two of the questions!!!

All baked goods are eaten by everyone on the show (camera crew and other staff included). Apparently there's a lot of people.

There's a Victoria sponge baked in every oven that's to be used each morning to check consistency of the ovens. . (Victoria sponges also consumed)

I'm just watching now - pancake production underway.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2016 13:51

I'm new to gbbo. Puzzled to how they know what ingredients they need. Do they get told batter/Yorkies etc. Then few mins to plan what they are doing - bbc then get the ingredients they need for their recipes and then have 2hrs/time ?

squoosh · 15/09/2016 14:07

Kate seemed nice enough but I'm glad she's gone. I did snigger when she said the only thing she and her husband differed on was whether or not to serve Yorkshire puddings with Christmas lunch!

I bet it's all go in their household.

squoosh · 15/09/2016 14:08

I still don;t have a favourite though! Although last night I felt myself rooting for Val and Jane and Benjamina.

FoxesOnSocks · 15/09/2016 14:14

Blondeshavemorefun they will know what they need to make in the first and last - they'd have been told 'filled savoury Yorkshire puddings' and whatever the show brief is and then they can plan what they want to do and practice through the week

Technical challenge they won't know - obviously they'll have some clue (such as this weeks would be batter)

Trojanhorsebox · 15/09/2016 15:05

I know people didn't like Kate, but Tom's Yorkshire puddings didn't rise at all, they were like blinis or crackers. I don't get how he can still be there. Kate's Yorkies weren't the best but they did rise.

I'm sensitive about bad Yorkies as my dear late mother's were the worst ever. She did one big one, not individual ones. It never rose at all - oven or oil not hot enough I guess. It was a big oily slab of teeth breaking concrete. I love a light well risen Yorkie. I don't make them often but I'm so happy when they work!

I'm new to Bake Off. I watched the first episode of season 1 the other day - technical challenge a Victoria sandwich - very different to series 6 and 7. The bakers seemed much more home cooking, have a go types rather than the polished practiced ones now. i suppose the series and expectations have evolved with time. I'm going to watch some more of the older ones I think.

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/09/2016 15:06

Yes Tom was awful. He was lucky to stay!

SoupDragon · 15/09/2016 15:16

I think the production team get the ingredients. I'm sure I read a article where they talked about this and having to source odd ingredients or send a runner out in an emergency. Or did they have someone stationed in the nearest supermarket...? I can't remember!

SoupDragon · 15/09/2016 15:16

Tom, and a couple of others, are there because they can only send on home per week! There have been a lot of lucky bakers so far.

MiddleClassProblem · 15/09/2016 15:17

I think Tom winning star baker the previous week might have given him the benefit of the doubt where as Kate has been a steady average for most bakes (unless I'm remembering wrong).

I think with shows like this they have to get more complicated as these contests will have seen previous series, practice more things, have Paul and Mary's cookbooks to work from for the technical etc.

MiddleClassProblem · 15/09/2016 15:18

My husband has been that runner on a few cooking shows Grin

GingerbreadCake · 15/09/2016 15:20

Does Kate strike anyone else as a probable regular on MN? I'm looking for a thread:

"AIBU to be gutted the nation saw me get voted out of GBBO last night?"

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 15/09/2016 15:34

Yes I read the same article I expect, about the team getting the ingredients, including some really odd ones. Of course they also must bring some of their own, like Kate and Ian last season, who grew half the stuff they used. They submit their ingredients list for the first and last, and then get given the stuff for the technical - and sometimes have to figure out how even to use it as the recipe doesn't say, but they'll know that if they're given sugar, it's supposed to be in there somewhere!

I do worry about some of the contestants reading stuff about themselves online, and hope that they avoid social media as much as possible during the time that it's shown! I hope also that they know that we know they are not necessarily like that in person, and that it's heavily edited to produce a particular effect. It's almost like we all are commenting on the characters that the producers have created, rather than the people themselves - but I bet it is hard for them to really accept that.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2016 15:56

Thanks foxes that makes more sense. So they get a week to pratice their receipes then

Wondered if they filmed the 'telling' beginning of week. Then record again week later as they always look so surprised at the request - yet then go as bake it

MiddleClassProblem · 15/09/2016 16:19

It's all filmed over one weekend each ep
