TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

You lot are all sleeping through the Bouchard-Vandeweghe match and Coco just threw her racket in frustration. I didn't think they were allowed that kind of unsportswomanlike conduct.

Genie is 2 games away from winning.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/01/2017 02:15

Ugh tied now. Coco is turning it around.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/01/2017 02:16

Well whoever wins this match is likely to be playing Kerber in the next round so I suppose it won't make much difference in the end....

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/01/2017 02:43

AAuuugghhhhhhhhhhhhh NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh well

Although Coco's post match interview has won me over a little bit. I didn't know she was doubles partners with Martina Hingis.

Morning heartsGrin

Just been watching the end of the Stan match, which was making me nervous.

Quite looking forward to the Fed/berdych match. Never really been a fan of either, Fed because he was always playing Nadal ( and on other tennis forums his fans are out and out vicious, so that puts me offGrin), and Berdych is just that player who is always there, making up the numbers in the top 10. Half the time I forget about him.

But this year he has Goran in his camp, ( who they showed a clip of earlier). For glimpses of him, I will watch the match. Maybe he can make Berdych more interesting to me.Grin

Evans doing well against Tomic. Two hot heads against each other, could get messy. Grin it's quite a speedy match too.

Evans looks like he got up late and had to borrow a p.e kitGrin . Does he not have a sponsor?

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 08:27

He does have Nike shoes though...

And it did remind me dd1 has p.e and football after school.

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 08:44

To answer my question, I have just read he doesn't have a clothing sponsor. Interesting.

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 10:03

had to take the dds to school, and go to assembly. Just back to see Dan Evans has won. it's a big year for him so far. Tsonga next- but I don't think that can be a foregone conclusion, in Jo-Willy's favour, given the way Evans has been playing.

If he carries on in tournament, he might even have a sponsor by the endGrin.

Nishikori seems to be doing ok, against Lacko. Nish is another I've never really warmed to at all. I'm sure he's very nice, but I don't get a thrill when I watch him.

I think it is that he's coached by Chang, who I've never forgiven for beating Edberg at RG in 1989. GrinIt was a heartbreaking match, as a Stefan fan. Chang is a couple of months younger than me, so fascinated me at the time, though. I was in the middle of my 'A' levels Grin.

Oh bloody well done Dan Evans!! Go that man!! Tennis

Raahh · 20/01/2017 11:13

Apparently Federer is 35.

You wouldn't know.

except they mention it EVERY BLOODY 10 SECONDS

Grin.

Berdych is not exactly playing as I thought he would.

Raahh · 20/01/2017 11:16

Nish has won. No surprise really. The way this is going, he will be up against Roger next.

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 11:58

Roger is 5-3 up in the 3rd set.

This has been a much quicker, easier match than anyone before it predicted.

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 12:09

an hour and a half Grin

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 12:36

Good win for Muguruza, who I really like. She has been a bit inconsistent since RG, though.

So, all the live stuff over for today.

OP posts:
Raahh · 20/01/2017 12:42

Well, we've just been reminded that Roger is nearly 36 . Because tellingus he is 35 is clearly getting boring.

Not til August.

Morning- am having a very stressful morning watching Rafa. This was always going to be a tricky match. But I have to take dd1 to football... So it needs to be over. And less nerve wracking. Grin

Vamos rafa! I need to go in the shower , dammit!

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/01/2017 09:02

Well, he got a break in the time it took to write that....

GrouchyKiwi · 21/01/2017 09:47

I'm very much enjoying your commentary, Raahh.

What a great time for British tennis this is. Andy, Evans, Konta all doing well.

Pleased for Rafa. I've never been much of a fan, but all the enthusiasm for him on these threads is catching. Grin

Barbara She is great fun, and her big sisters love her. It's brilliant watching all three of them interact. Could do with more sleep, though. Wink

Raahh · 21/01/2017 10:03

Morning grouchy

Talking to myself on tennis threads is very cathartic. Grin

Raonic is now being tested by Simon, who I also like, and he's caused a few upsets in his time.

Monfils meets Rafa next. I'm a bit worried about that one. No-one can say he's got an easy draw. Monfils seems to have realised over the past year or so that he can be entertaining, and also focus and win matches. So it won't be an easy match and could go either way.

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/01/2017 10:42

The Dimitrov/Gasquet match looked like it would start very, very late . Unless Gavrilova manages to wrap this up in speedy Fed-like fashion. Which she looks like she might well do.

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/01/2017 12:16

Well, it looked like Bacsinsky was going to pull back, but it's going Dasha's way again in the 3rd. The Pliskova match is all over the place.

OP posts:
Raahh · 21/01/2017 15:07

Well, the Dimitrov match was easier than I expected it be, I like Richard, bit am glad to see Grigor's form is still continuing to improve. Gasquet didn't seem quite himself though.

OP posts:
Raahh · 22/01/2017 08:34

Morning all.

Well, the tournament is looking very interesting now. Murray lost to Zverev.

Evans is currently struggling in his match against Tsonga.
