TENNIS THREAD!- From the Road to Rio, to Flushing Meadows...

Raahh · 09/08/2016 23:14

before my phone decides to give up altogether, here's a new thread to get us on our way.

Andy Murray still in the Olympic Singles, as is Rafa,

Jo Konta through for the women.

Lots of missing names from the top players- but we are edging towards the US open- without Federer- and who knows, maybe even without Djokovic.

Could we be heading for all change at the top?

I've turned off the actual tennis!

SpaceUnicorn · 05/09/2016 00:28

FUUUUUUCK. Sad

SpaceUnicorn · 05/09/2016 00:29

8-6 in the tie-break 😥

Raahh · 05/09/2016 00:30

BollocksSad

Well done to Pouille, but I really wish that could have gone Rafa's way. Sad

Still, at one point I didn't think he would be playing the US at all.

Delpo for the win now. Tennis

Lucas is very sweet though.

Wahhh! That's all Sad

Nishky · 05/09/2016 05:16

Shame about Rafa. Didn't watch that-actually had an early night, but woke up at 4 feeling a bit queasy, so am watching the end of the Djokovic/Edmunds match.

Thought Kyle would give him more of a match, but never mind.

AmIthatbloodycold · 05/09/2016 07:57

Woke to the disappointing news about Kyle.

I'm wondering if it was as convincing a win as the score suggests

I'm knackered. Might have to go to bed early and set the alarm for the early hours for Andy and gorgeous Grigor's match

Raahh · 05/09/2016 17:34

Delpo doing really well against Thiem- although ordinarily I would e wanting Dom to win.

Vamos Delpo!

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/09/2016 17:52

Delpo through and looking really good-Thiem retired though. I like Thiem, but the idea of Delpo going all the way (oo-er)is awesome. And if anyone deserves a lucky break, he does.

Likely to play Stan next, who he beat at Wimbledon, so it's looking good.

Vamos

Raahh · 05/09/2016 19:25

Stan is 2 sets up. Go Stan!

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/09/2016 20:36

Oh dear- Marchenko is coming back, and Stan is now in a very bad mood. A racquet may have been smashed. Grin

Nishky- your name is a good nickname for Nishikori though! Wink.

Well the Brits did well didn't they? Was hoping Kyle would demolish Novak but hey ho.......

well done Andy.

I want ANdy and Delpo or Monfils in the finals.Tennis.

WTF is serena wearing??????? anyone remember that programme the kids from Fame in the 80's? that springs to mind.

her heads getting bigger and bigger as she ties and surpasses Martinas wins and whoevers next. seriously, cant stand her.

Nishky · 06/09/2016 20:15

We shall call him that then Becker!

I hope if it is an Andy /Djokovic final, Andy walks onto court wearing his Olympic medals Grin

I think Serena should be expelled from the whole tournament for dressing like that.

NoBarbaraGood · 07/09/2016 02:34

Hi all,

Watching Tsonga-Djoko and hoping for a miracle. Crowd is willing Jo to play better, without a ton of success so far, but it's early.

Haven't been thrilled by much in this tournament.

I have had/am having a health scare and I'm wishing the level of play could take my mind off things. Unlikely at this point. Maybe by semifinals?!

GrouchyKiwi · 07/09/2016 08:42

I see that JoW retired against Djokovic. How weird that so many of his opponents have dropped out this year. Does it mean he goes into the semis underbaked or is it good for him because he's rested?

GrouchyKiwi · 07/09/2016 08:44

Barbara Sorry about your health scare. Hope everything turns out ok. Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2016 11:14

With all due respect to Djok's semi-final opponent it looks like he'll arrive well rested in the final. I hope he's underbaked when he gets there.

Barbara hope you are OK, best wishes to you Flowers

BagelGoesWalking · 07/09/2016 17:25

Rather underwhelming so far. Bad luck to JoW on this injury, he had a good chance.

Looking forward to Murray/Nishikori and DelP/Wawrinka. Also hoping Halep can beat Serena.

Who the heck is Konjuh? Never seen/heard of her before?!

BeckerLleytonNever · 07/09/2016 17:26

Barbra Flowers.

Nishky I like the player, but if some posters don't and they say Nishky they obv don't mean you! Wink.

Okay. just a pedantic suspicious thought. just niggling my mind.( Im the worlds most pedantic/judgy/critical person EVER.)

really cant think its true, but....you know all the match fixing scandals?

Now this would concern me with any player, but it just seems too much co incidence thatnearly all Novaks opponents are finishing early with injuries.
I know other matches against other players have happened the same too but...... am I reading too much into this? probably. why would the top players need to cheat somehow? and really, would Jo and the other top players sacrifice a possible GS title?

Im wrong aren't I?

mind you, what a stinky attitude Novak has, I don't know when he started to go downhill attitude wise, aaparantly he said 'this is the scenario that I dreamed and wished for'. WTF????????????? sounds like hes glad they've all been injured.

SpaceUnicorn · 07/09/2016 18:50

Oooh, Murray/Nishikori starting now.

I'm going to follow the guardian live feed of it Smile

NoBarbaraGood · 07/09/2016 19:42

Thanks for the flowers! I had a test; just got results; it's not cancer after all; still going to have bits cut out because they are suspicious. Yuck. But much less yucky than it might have been.

The tennis has been pretty routine, hasn't it? Watching Andy v Ken right now from the comfort of the couch. Andy looks scary good. Ken, not so much....Amazing passing shot right there.

Fingers crossed for Halep tonight. I like her a lot.

As much as I dislike ND, I have a hard time thinking these retirements are anything other than ridiculous luck for him. Does seem shady though.... If it had been MY favorite player in the same shoes, I would be embarrassed (but relieved) by the results. I would be furious if I'd had tickets, or a job as an Open organizer.

I hope the night matches are interesting....

AmIthatbloodycold · 07/09/2016 19:50

Am glad it's on at a reasonable time Space.

NoBarbaraGood · 07/09/2016 19:55

And another break for Murray! I think the crowd is getting annoyed by the lack of competition. There will be some jeering before too long...

Brad Gilbert (sometime coach and commentator for ESPN), who loves nothing so much as coming up with silly nicknames for players, calls Simona Halep Jalepeno. Just thought I'd share that.

NoBarbaraGood · 07/09/2016 19:56

Ken has gotten the break back and the crowd goes wild. I think they just want a match. Hope Andy won't take the wild applause personally....
