I suspect there is going to be a massive backlash to this. Brilliant acting but a dreadful end. Yes, rapists get off but it shouldn't have been portrayed as such on a massive soap.

NigellasGuest · 19/08/2016 20:41

it does highlight the injustice of it all though. And the additional suffering of the victims.

pepperpot99 · 19/08/2016 20:50

He'll get east end justice now.

MrsJayy · 19/08/2016 20:53

Bloody hell im shocked but I guess it shows men do get away with it Sad]

Goingtobeawesome · 19/08/2016 20:55

Sadly EE didn't need to show that rapists get off. We all know they do. Maybe it was to reflect real life is shit at times.

Heavens2Betsy · 19/08/2016 20:56

I thought it was really well done and true to life. Raoists do sometimes get off and I think it showed that the victims strength is what gets them through regardless of the actual verdict.
I liked Kathy talking about her feelings so long after her rapes too. It was a positive episode handled really well.

Eastenders at its best!

MrsJayy · 19/08/2016 20:56

Yeah it is shit

unimagmative13 · 19/08/2016 20:58

He should of been found guilty

Goingtobeawesome · 19/08/2016 20:59

I feel like I want to say more but I can't and this is a frivolous topic but Wine to all that need or want it or [choc] not cadburys crap if preferred.

southeastdweller · 19/08/2016 21:05

Seems that EE wanted to portray what happens most of the time when rapists go to court:

www.digitalspy.com/soaps/eastenders/news/a805266/eastenders-catch-up-dean-wicks-trial-verdict-revealed-rape-crisis-reacts/

Don't read the above article after this paragraph - Dean is not returning to EastEnders and his father Buster Briggs has even decided to pay him off, wanting to get Dean abroad so that he won't cross paths with Walford's residents again if you don't want to know a spoiler about a character who's leaving soon.

EnidButton · 19/08/2016 23:48

I'm about 20 minutes in and I'm finding it quite hard to watch. Keep pausing it.

I want to watch it all though as it's very well written and the acting tonight is incredibly good. Even Kathy who I wasn't thinking much of until now.

EnidButton · 20/08/2016 00:40

Finally watched it, glad I did. It was very well written and sadly accurate for a lot of women.

I like what Linda said about concentrating on what they have in the here and now.

Flowers to those who need them. x

MrsJayy · 20/08/2016 00:43

It was a great episode really well written and acted I was hanging on every word

SoTheySentMeA · 20/08/2016 01:53

I completely disagree with pp who say it was shit. I like that Dean's trial took place entirely off screen so that all of the focus was on the strength of the survivors Linda and Roxy (and Kathy who is also a rape survivor). I like that they've have chosen to highlight the huge injustice towards women that is taking place in the legal system. I like that EE worked closely with Rape Crisis on this storyline, to examine exactly how less than 6% of rape cases result in conviction. I like that they've highlighted how and why that happens.

Roxy's sexual history was brought up and used against her, but the previous complaint against Dean of rape wasn't. A pp said this:
And I'm pretty sure they don't drag up rape victims past sexual activities
I was on a jury for a rape case once and exactly this happened. The victims previous relationships, sexual preferences and even Facebook statuses were pulled out and thrown at her, to 'prove' how promiscuous she was, and that she might say anything to cover up cheating on her boyfriend. The utterly disgusting defendant in the case said openly in court "why would I have to rape her? Look at me and look at her, I could get 20 girls better looking than she is". None of his previous history was raised during the trial. In the jury room I repeatedly pointed out that her history had nothing to do with it, and that he was clearly a vile person but I was 19, unsure of myself and not especially articulate. He was found Not Guilty. After the verdict was given, the judge said that he had something like 26 previous convictions for things like Assault, Aggravated Burglary, ABH etc... and one for sexual assault. None of my arguments got that girl justice and it left me deeply affected for a long time.

EE has for once done a decent job, bringing this issue to the fore. No one could argue that either Linda or Roxy asked for it, or that either of them deserved it. It can't be said that EE have minimised the seriousness of either attack. They haven't. They've shown the horrendous, long lasting effects on the victims, how the perpetrator minimises and excuses their behaviour by deflecting onto the victim, and how the justice system fails victins time and time again..

It's sad and appaling but all too real that Dean got away with it. Now, maybe next time a jury sits a rape case, some of them might have seen this, and maybe it will make them think twice.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 20/08/2016 07:53

I completely understand the actor playing Dean not wanting to return for that.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 20/08/2016 07:54

it's real life, but there are times when eastenders should be like real life.

MrsJayy · 20/08/2016 08:41

sotheysentme that poster meant it was shit he got away with it like some men do

NuggetofPurestGreen · 20/08/2016 09:17

Horrible wasn't it. And all the women blaming themselves was what got me. Ugh.

And yes I'm pretty sure they do bring up victim's history and victim blame in court. Couldn't believe when Dean's brief said he was of previously good character. Except the last rape and that time he got Sean Slater sent down by hiding evidence.

southeastdweller · 20/08/2016 09:24

Dean had been in jail for perverting the course of justice in Sean's case - aren't previous convictions allowed to be mentioned in trials like the one yesterday, does anyone know?

NuggetofPurestGreen · 20/08/2016 09:26

I have a feeling not southeast but not sure. However still think it's a bit much to say he's of good character even if they can't mention convictions!

MrsJayy · 20/08/2016 09:38

That is what Roxy was saying she was made out to be a slag pulled to bits yet he was just being tried (sp) for this his background was ignored his previous arrest for Lindas rape was ignored his prison sentence was ignored.

MagpieCursedTea · 20/08/2016 15:16

I found that incredibly difficult to watch, I do think it was well done though. I wonder if that will be the end of it or if there'll still be some sort of justice?
I also thought that maybe Buster have him the money to start a new life out of guilt/love rather than just paying him off to get rid of him.

BlueThursday · 20/08/2016 17:06

Why can't EE always be as well done as this?

Optimist1 · 20/08/2016 18:53

I guess the writers have to churn it out at a fairly brisk pace most of the time but when there's a major event such as this they can devote more time to discussing/planning/finessing the episode. I agree it was very well done and reflects the current state of play for victimss of rape.

AndYourBirdCanSing · 20/08/2016 22:46

Just caught up- I thought it was very well done, and sadly realistic in how Roxy was treated in court, as well as the verdict, unfortunately.

I actually love how the focus was on the women, and think this has actually helped raise awareness. All did a brillant job.
