Such a wonderful show. I think it wonderfully demonstrates the internal struggle that a person of faith has. The dichotomy of their their spiritual self and their.........

Who am I kidding? I'm only watching it because the lovely James Norton is in it. Such is my (non spiritual) devotion I'm even willing to tolerate Robson Green.

Selfless that's what I am!

Agree. Don't like Amanda at all. Very selfish continuing to hang around him.

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 09:58

Aw, I want Sidney and Amanda back together. That Margaret is no better than she ought to be.

James N is luvvly isn't he?

polyhymnia · 22/03/2016 14:36

I think he deserves better than Amanda. She wasn't so bad in last series but has shown herself very self centred in this - not letting him move on, etc

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/03/2016 14:37

I like Amanda! Better than that strumpet from the police station typing pool.

GlindatheFairy · 22/03/2016 14:38

Can't stand creepy-eyed vicar.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/03/2016 14:42

Sidney? Creepy eyed?

Shock
GlindatheFairy · 22/03/2016 14:49

I'm afraid so. First saw JT in War and Peace and he made the hair stand up at the back of my neck- not in a good way. Having afterwards watched him in Happy Valley didn't help Shock. My mum watches Grantchester and I tried to get into it the other day. Sorry, I just can't stand him. Visceral reaction.

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 14:55

Amanda just loves him.

I'm with the housekeeper on yer wan: 'She doesn't wear stockings! Grin

Fiderer · 22/03/2016 17:48

Seem to remember when JN first asked her why she was going to marry RichGit she answered "Because he asked" - like a 10 yr old. Yes there was the family pressure but still, don't feel v sorry for her.

Don't like SnoggyFace though. I think I'm turning into his housekeeper.

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 17:50

I think the pressure of expectation on women, of her class anyway, to marry, was quite intense in those days. I'd imagine she didn't have (or didn't think she had) many other options apart from making a good marriage.

Also, although I have to admit I don't remember that line or its context, it may have been a bit of a hint to Sidney that HE had never asked her despite obviously being in love with her.

Fiderer · 22/03/2016 17:59

Only Yes of course you're right in all that but I still don't like her.

Wink
OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 18:07

Poor Amanda! I like you, A. Grin

Clawdy · 22/03/2016 19:56

Not wild about Amanda, but Sidney loves her and I want him to be happy. I read the book recently, and in it, their relationship is quite different - they are just good mates who joke about ending up with each other, but it's all banter and fun.

Clawdy · 23/03/2016 22:13

Hope we've seen the last of Margaret.

ProfYaffle · 24/03/2016 06:26

I have to say I'm getting a bit fed up with the Amanda thing, feels like going over the same ground again and again.

Did anyone hear James Runcie (author of the books) on Radio 4 yesterday? He said exploring the morals of the 50s, attitudes to women, homosexuality, race etc was one of his aims.

Clawdy · 24/03/2016 09:34

Yes,the Amanda story is going round in circles. Wonder what James Runcie thought of the total change the tv version has made to Sidney 's love life. In the book, no Margaret, Amanda just a good mate, and he marries the German woman who was in the last series, who has now disappeared!!

mrswhiplington · 24/03/2016 10:42

I love the curate. He's so sweet "I've done something terrible but I feel so alive", after placing a bet. Hope he gets some more time on screen.

Clawdy · 24/03/2016 10:50

Yes,he's lovely. And he has a real 1950s face! That hair and smile!

OnlyLovers · 24/03/2016 10:51

I'm a bit tired of the curate actually and his perpetual fluttering. Get a grip, man!

Fiderer · 24/03/2016 11:47

I love the curate too. "There's a mackintosh I've got my eye on." Grin

polyhymnia · 24/03/2016 12:10

Now, the German woman would have been a much better bet than droopy Amanda (though now we know she's a DV victim, I guess we have to sympathise with her).

OnlyLovers · 24/03/2016 12:11

I found the German woman very dull and lacking in charisma. I think Amanda is funny and clever. I just want the best for Sidney if I can't have him myself

Fiderer · 24/03/2016 12:24

I think he was more looking-after-broken-bird caring than wanting to be involved with the German woman.

It is rather disconcerting to find a man in vicar-ey garb so attractive. But there we have it Grin

OnlyLovers · 24/03/2016 12:33

I know, Fiderer! It makes me feel a bit kinky.

polyhymnia · 24/03/2016 12:52

Actually have come across several good looking vicars - the majority were gay.
