I've just found out that there was a one-off feature-length episode of this. I'm not sure if it aired on UK-wide TV or just BBC Wales.

Does anyone know a) where I can get it (it's not on iPlayer) and b) if I need to have watched it to make sense of the second series?

Sorry- is he meant to be Welsh? I didn't realise. (I do know lots of Welsh people don't speak Welsh, just didn't realise his character was one- its been too long since series one was shown!)

Interesting about Rhys' DH, diddl!

diddl · 12/01/2016 14:14

I have a feeling that in the "English" version he is English & doesn't speak Welsh at all?

Has relocated from London?

If that's the case though, why does he speak Welsh in the Welsh version?

Tbh I can't see problem with an all Welsh version & subtitles.

Perhaps an English version was made to sell it outside of Wales.

Sad if that's the case.

OnlyLovers · 12/01/2016 14:40

I think he relocated from working in London, yes, but he IS actually Welsh, right? I'm sure he has a Welsh accent, and seems to pronounce Welsh names properly, to my limited knowledge anyway (Morgan etc).

It is a bit odd that he speaks Welsh in the Welsh version. I think him not being a Welsh-speaker in the English version definitely adds a layer of otherness, which presumably is missing in the all-Welsh version. In that respect (and acknowledging that I haven't seen the Welsh one) I'd venture the opinion that the English one is a bit more interesting –him not speaking Welsh definitely adds tension, for me.

Yes, he could be Welsh & not speak Welsh, I suppose?

Is that a possibility?

Would that make him more of an outsider?

absolutelynotfabulous · 12/01/2016 14:47

I remember Mared's house, too. Not sure what happened there.

The Welsh version was all in Welsh and called YGwyll. All the characters spoke Welsh, including Matthias (unless the character was not Welsh, such as a,Polish witness or something.).

What I don't get is: why, if the series is already available in Welsh, why not just air the same series nationwide with English subtitles? It's effectively been done twice, once in Welsh and once kind of bilingually with English subtitles! Weird!

OnlyLovers · 12/01/2016 14:49

'Yes, he could be Welsh & not speak Welsh, I suppose?

Is that a possibility?'

Yes, he is, in the English version. That's what I was trying to get at. Lots of Welsh people don't speak Welsh.

Re: outsider status, I'm interested in whether the language thing is 'political' in the English/Welsh series; if it makes his colleagues and/or the suspects etc he encounters view him as not quite one of them.

"What I don't get is: why, if the series is already available in Welsh, why not just air the same series nationwide with English subtitles? "

That's exactly what I think.

I find it easier to have all subtitles tbh.

absolutelynotfabulous · 12/01/2016 15:08

Sorry, x-posted with diddl.
I think I get what you mean about Matthias. Yes, I think he would stand out as a non-Welsh speaker in a Welsh-speaking community and that factor would contribute towards his "otherness". So maybe that's the point of making him English speaking, even though he's mysterious enough in the Welsh version.

I don't get what's going on with Prosser, either. There's definitely something, though. Not sure if you've all seen the episode where Matthias's wife comes to look for him?

irishe · 12/01/2016 15:15

Love this series, but have got a bit confused with what I have seen and where! I think I have watched 2 series, first one on bbc4 and 2nd on iplayer. I am in scotland. I definitely have not seen anything about his wife coming looking for him. I thought another series was due on bbc4 soon, is ths series 3? What is the standalone one pp are referring to? Can anyone clarify?

This is a great series but I honestly think has been woefully promoted by the bbc, hence everyone's confusion!

OnlyLovers · 12/01/2016 15:36

absolutely, DP and I both remember thinking there was something 'off' about Prosser in Series 1 but can't remember why or what. I'm sure some huge dark secret is going to come out.

irishe, are you sure you've watched Series 2? Sorry, that sounds like a daft question, but I also watched Series 1 on BBC4 and am now watching Series 2 on iPlayer and Series 2 definitely features his wife.

I think she actually arrives in the one-off (maybe someone who's seen it can confirm?); in the first ep of Series 2 she's just there without being introduced, as though she's arrived previously, IYSWIM.

I don't want to give too much away in case you haven't seen them, but she is staying at a hotel on the seafront with a neon sign (I can't remember its name though). She has a not-native-British accent and blondish hair in a ponytail.

Yes, as I recall the wife turns up dripping wet (well, this IS Wales) and stays around for a bit, during which time we get to learn a bit about Matthias's past.

Slightly off-topic, but there's some great Welsh language drama around at the moment on S4C.

OnlyLovers · 12/01/2016 16:32

Is it subtitled and available online, absolutely? I'm always looking for good new telly!

OP posts:
absolutelynotfabulous · 12/01/2016 17:11

Mmm.if you've got Sky, it'll be under S4C. Just another channel. I can get it on Bbc iplayer too. If you scroll through "channels" until you come to S4C you'll get it on the same basis as other channels. I think there's subtitles.

There's a really good one that's just finished called 35 Diwrnod. It's a murder drama (not a procedure one). It starts with a murder, and counts down 35 days. Very complex and gripping.

And the last Hinterland is on for us in Wales tomorrow at 9pm. BBC Wales.

TannhauserGate · 12/01/2016 17:56

His wife is played by the woman that was the translator for asylum seekers in River.

So they re-did the dialogue once in Welsh, once in English and Welsh?
Why? There are subtitles!
I love the slipping in and out of each language the characters do.

OnlyLovers · 12/01/2016 17:57

His wife is played by the woman that was the translator for asylum seekers in River.

YES! I'd forgotten that.

Thanks, absolutely. I don't get Sky so I'll have to look at iPlayer. 35 Diwrnod sounds good.

Enjoy the last Hinterland!

The hotel she's at is called Consti (though I think it's called that in rl too, if you look on trip advisor)

TannhauserGate · 12/01/2016 18:00

On wikipedia it says the stand alone episode was broadcast last January. And repeated in September.
Going back to Matthias speaking Welsh then speaking English, could I check that they didn't refilm the series. Just redid the sound?

Postchildrenpregranny · 12/01/2016 18:11

They filmed it twice once in each language
Is anyone prepared to tell us how his daughter died?
Big Spoiler alert ?

TannhauserGate · 12/01/2016 18:14

Gosh- didn't that cost a fortune?

Has anyone seen both? Which has the best atmosphere?

gingercat12 · 12/01/2016 18:14

Tannhuser When series 1 was coming out they said that they shot each scene twice.

As I said subtitles on S4C were quite hit and miss. They did not translate everything and finished subtitles a few sentences before the end of the episode. DH and I were quiet baffled sometimes, but stuck to it. Beautifully filmed.

TannhauserGate · 12/01/2016 18:15

Perhaps a kind person could pm us, and put us out of our misery?

TannhauserGate · 12/01/2016 18:15

Thanks ginger.

Postchildrenpregranny · 12/01/2016 18:16

And slipping in and out of both langages is exactly what bi lingual North Walians do
I love that they sound just like my parents
And it's very well filmed and acted
Does anyone but me think/hope he and Mared will end up together?

diddl · 12/01/2016 18:23

I wonder if they would have been better off filming once, subtitling and then PROMOTING it!

Were both versions shown in Wales?

gingercat12 · 12/01/2016 18:25

Postchildren That is interesting. Thanks for telling us. It sounded weird and unnecessary to us at first, but if that is how it is in real life it adds to the story.
