So, what did you all think of part one??

I'm soooo disappointed. I only read the book this week though so it might have been better if I had had long enough gap to have forgotten it...?

Ahhhh... never read the book before a filmed version. Alwasy read it afterwards.

I loved it - haven't read the book for years but plan on retrieving it from the loft

foxinsocks · 17/12/2006 22:36

couldn't get over Marc Warren's (the bloke from hustle? not sure I have the right name) accent

Dh is big terry pratchet fan and said that it was quite true to the book but due to having read over 30 of his books he has his own idea of what characters were like so was slightly spoilt in that way.

Personally was not too bothered by it as its not my type of thing.

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 17/12/2006 22:46

I get all worked up if I read it after - the images are always all wrong (although thinking about it that wouldn't have happened with a Discworld one because I already have the images, just not that story )... what was with Teatime's accent? He sounded like Depp doing Willy Wonka (also slightly freaky...)

Nobby was just all wrong.... and I wanted Death's mouth to move You always end up with slightly different ideas anyway - I think mine are mainly based on the original artwork (the ones with all the little details in the pics... I forget who drew them).

Are me, dp and lodger the only die hard pratchett fans that loved this?

I know they changed a lot of the storyline, but I think they captured the idea of the story very well and the characters.

HAd appaling visions of it being like the animated soul music (if you haven't seen it - don't).

The only bit I had a problem with was Nobby Nobbs. HIs famous boil collection was non-existant. He had a perfect complextion!!!

But then I never liked Josh Kirby's artwork (the guy who did the book covers). He never seemed to read the descriptions that clearly. There were some major flaws in them (Teatime on the cover for example or the famous one that Twoflower is depicted with 4 eyes). PAul Kidby who did the Guards Guards graphic novel and I think the later book covers after JK died was much much better.

Ok I sound like a geek I know, but I loved this adaptation. Was worried about David Jason, but he pulled it off well. Teatime looked perfect and I think although the accent was odd, it suited.

FoulOleRon · 18/12/2006 22:46

It took a while for me to get into but I thought it was a pretty good adaptation - though I do agree that Nobby Nobbs was not Nobby enough. David Jason was good, and Joss Ackland, but not sure about Susan. Thought Mr Teatime's accent was alright, he was certainly creepy (loved David Warner's Mr Downey - was a bit disappointed the Auditors didn't disappear if they said 'me' or 'I' but I may be confusing that with another book).
My only criticisms were that it seemed a little slow in part one, and the humour of the books didn't come over as well. Thought it was quite well visualised.
The Night Watch are my favourite though; have just re-read Thud! and am impatiently awaiting the next one. I have no time for those poxy little blue men TP keeps writing about.

busybusymum · 18/12/2006 22:55

I have recorder it to watch later. Looking forward to it. May even put it on to a couple of videos to make sure DH doesnt delete it for footy!

TheChristmasArmadillo · 18/12/2006 22:59

Ooh we were discussing what if they made guards guards into a book.

I think Alan Rickman would make a good Vetinari.

But don't know who I would want as VImes, Carrot, Sybil, Nobby needs more boils (I'm thinking Baldrick, Baldrick is Nobby surely? ), Carrot, Colon.

Ok so I only got Vetinari sorted.

DP thinks Sandy Toksivig (sp?) as Sybil
Lodger thinks Dawn French.
I am not convinced by either of those.

Any ideas?

TheChristmasArmadillo · 18/12/2006 23:00

made guards guards into a film duh!

Really liked the graphics for A'Tuin and the discworld- thought they were spot on.

thechoir · 18/12/2006 23:06

my all time favourite is Lords and Ladies, but then, I'm a big fan of the witches. Hated that dreadful cartoon version of Wyrd Sisters.
Ds2 crept in and watched part 2 of Hogfather with me tonight. he kept saying ''are you sure that isn't the man in Willy Wonka?''

thechoir · 18/12/2006 23:07

sorry, it's Yulemoonfiend here, fresh from my role in the MN nativity play

FoulOleRon · 18/12/2006 23:11

Oooh now then
Rickman as Vetinari - perfect!
Definitely Baldricktype as Nobby
The illustrations for Vimes in 'Where's My Cow?' are very like Pete Postlethwaite which I found a bit upsetting, he should be more attractive than that.
Geraldine James would make a good Sybill.
The rest need some thought...Ronnie Barker would have made a good Colon.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 18/12/2006 23:15

ahem. WHere were you in teh hogfather. Got drunk and forgot to turn up I expect. Humph.

Geraldine JAmes - good actress, but not big enough. Sybil is a erm voluptuous woman.

Ronnie Barker would have been perfect - good idea. NOw all we need is a time machine.

Pete Postlethwaite is a bit old now. Bit younger and he would ahve been perfect.

FoulOleRon · 18/12/2006 23:17

Bugrit millennium hand and shrimp, that's what I say.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 18/12/2006 23:19

...

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 09:14

Great casting there! I didn't know JK had died - I wondered why there was the change

OP posts:
danceswithreindeer · 19/12/2006 09:21

OH *OLLOCKS!!!! I missed it Is it repeated before the next part? I love Terry Pratchett's books

Even though I don't like him how about Martin Clunes for Carrot?
Vimes - now that's a tricky one...I'll be thinking about that all day

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 19/12/2006 09:25

I found this very dull..I lasted about as long as I did with one of the books, about 50 pages..how can you like it, it's so contrived and dry and dull

And dull or have I already said that?

And I hate the fact that it is going to be repeated ad nauseam for ever more every time I want to watch something decent this will be on..grim, grim, grim.

Yeeeeeuch dire horrible programme and a waste of good technology
