So, what did you all think of part one??

I'm soooo disappointed. I only read the book this week though so it might have been better if I had had long enough gap to have forgotten it...?

I'm a die hard pratchett fans who loved this I need to catch up with the discworld books, I'm so far behind now.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2006 09:31

I dodn't know JK dies - I loved his book covers. In fact I have a limited edition signed print of the artwork for Discworld Companion (print 8/500 I think )

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2006 09:32

But did you like it, Glenn?

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 19/12/2006 09:33

and on another note I saw JK has died and thought oh has she?

Twiglett · 19/12/2006 10:08

very good adaptation and very true to the book I thought .. which for a fan actually makes it quite a dull viewing because rather than getting into the story I was going 'oh I wonder how they'll tackle this' and 'oh yes directly from the book' ...

didn't enjoy it .. but DH who also likes Pratchett but hasn't read Hogfather really enjoyed it

we ARE going to let DS (almost 6) see it at christmas I think he'll be fine

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 19/12/2006 10:11

if I was a child i would think I was being punished if my parents sat me in front of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 13:49

DD (3.6) sat and watched the second half of the first part and was completely fine with it... She has been raised on Buffy though

I always think of Bob Peck (or someone like that) for Vimes (apart from the whole being dead bit).

Have seen part one of Hogfather (part two recorded to watch tonight) and didn't love it, but was fairly impressed -- they did a much better job than I thought they'd do and generally the casting was in the right ballpark for my own mental images of the characters, although I had some quibbles.

Iklboobetterwatchout · 19/12/2006 13:58

It's being repeated 1pm Xmas day & Boxing Day.

I quite liked it. Thought Ian Richardson did Death's voice very well. Wasn't at all sure about the Willy Wonka Teatime though.
It's weird how we get ideas in our head about who shuold play TP characters.

And WHERE was the Librarian?????

(ook)

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 14:03

You're joking? no librarian???

OP posts:
Iklboobetterwatchout · 19/12/2006 14:04

I was looking FORWARD to seeing the Librarian too [sulk]

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 14:08

Glad I missed part two then!

I wonder if, for the 1pm viewind, they'll leave in the line about "P-ing brandy sauce" or whatever it was...

I think I'd have a problem with dSs watching it because of the questions it raises about believing in Santa. They'd be fine with the scariness etc (DS1 also raised on Buffy!)

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 14:15

Luckily she was very tired and wasn't with it enough to take in too much. I wouldn't have thought about the santa questions (still getting my head round that she has cottoned on to santa)

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2006 14:20

It was when the father was found dressed up as the Hogfather by his daughter that made me think it could raise awkward Santa questions. And the fact that the "Santa" was being played by a skeleton in a fake beard...

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 14:24

Should I be concerned that DD didn't bat an eyelid at Santa being a skeleton?

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2006 16:55

She's too little. But you will have some explainign to do when she goes to a grotto and asks him why he's so fat and not bony like the other one...

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 19/12/2006 17:13

pmsl "Mummy why isn't santa a skelington??? This santa isn't real!!! "

I was disappointed, as I was with all the Discworld cartoons. How can something so jampacked with oneliners, plot and action come over so slow and dull on screen? There was so much silence! Susan spent the whole first episode with her head cocked on one side and a quizzical expression.
I liked the actors and the design, I thought it looked perfect - there just wasn't enough talking! Loved Mr Teatime.
Did anyone ever see the stageplay of Guards Guards where Vimes was played by Avon from Blake's Seven? Very sexy David Warner type but probably a bit too old now, more suited to a sinister guild leader or vampire perhaps.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2006 18:46

I think the problem is that the humour is all in the writing so when verbal descriptions are translated into visual acting, it's lost. I would imagine that the "Susan looking quizzical" type bits were worded somewhat more amusingly in the book. A verbal description of someone doing something like that will always be more fulfilling than watching it onscreen.

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 19/12/2006 18:47

Oh and it should be the landlord from Early Doors as Colon! (he seems to be Roy Kinnear resurrected )

wethreekingsofORINOCOare · 19/12/2006 21:50

I must admit I'm not familiar with TP, and I only watched the first part (couldn't be bothered with the second)

But I loved the verruca gnome

FoulOleRon · 19/12/2006 23:04

How about Philip Glenister for Vimes? (the senior cop in Life On Mars). Slimmed down with a haircut he'd have that seen hard times hard man look (and be slightly fanciable).
The only natural redhead I can think of for Carrot is Damian Lewis. Hmmmmm.....

Bugrit

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 20/12/2006 09:40

Think Carrot's got to have the swashbuckling natural born prince look first (inc BIG shoulders), ginger hair can be added. Maybe John Barrowman in younger days.

FoulOleRon · 20/12/2006 10:57

Nah, he doesn't look clean-living!
