Agree that they should rename the award as for the UK sporting achievement of the year. It shouldn't be about their bubbly personalities or GSOH. Many top sportspeople are too focussed and obsessive for that guff.

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/12/2015 16:42

I think this programme was bloody awful. Agree absolutely about the "personality" thing. If it's about sport, let it be about sport. This was more like the bloody Royal Variety Show! What the f..k was Eddie Izzard doing there? And that Northern Irish bloke who's on everything?

Anotherusername1 · 21/12/2015 16:57

I think Mo should have won really. His achievements are amazing although I did actually vote for Jessica Ennis-Hill as I think coming back so spectacularly from having a baby was so inspirational.

I think Greg Rutherford should have won it, simultaneously holding all the gold medals you can in your discipline is a fantastic achievement and even greater than Mo or Jess (although Jess might be in that position had she not been injured and had a child and competed in the Euros and Commonwealth Games). Adam Peaty would also have been a worth winner although he's probably young enough to have another shot at it.

My son wanted Max Whitlock to win so I let him use my online vote.

Not sure why Murray won it, given that he won it two years ago. And why was Lewis H on the list if he won it last year? It would be a bit fairer to disregard those who've won it before.

I would have liked to have seen the womens football team win the team award but given that it was being hosted in NI I suppose they had to really go with an all-UK team.

tthisisgettingboring · 21/12/2015 17:41

I guess Lewis Hamilon won the world championship 3 times which is a huge achievement.

Shocked at how few votes Greg Rutherford had.

Women's football team didn't actually win though did they which makes a big difference.

I don't think I'm being patronising about J E-H winning as well as she did so soon after having a baby, I do think it's very inspirational to all of us women who have children and struggle on afterwards - how is that patronising?

Do sort of agree though that if they win it once they shouldn't really be nominated again as there are just so many brilliant sports men and women out there.

bojorojo · 21/12/2015 18:26

It feels patronising to suggest a woman should get a vote because she has had a baby. It is not that JE-H is not a fantastic athlete - she is.

Murray and Fury were added to the original list. I know the Davis Cup team could only play who was in the competition but if Novak showed up it might be a different story. Perhaps he will when he stops winning everything else and beating Murray nearly every time they play. Also how quickly we forget Murray having a total hissy fit at Wimbledon 2014. It was appalling. The Davis Cup was used to restore his credibility! Winning this competition is purely dependent upon who decides to sacrifice their singles career for Davis Cup tennis. Has Murray played every year in the past? I do not think so.

I do not think not residing in this country should be counted against someone either. Many athletes train abroad, eg Paula Radford, and no-one said she was un-British for being in the USA for years.

AmIthatautumnal · 21/12/2015 18:43

You're right Gin.

I love Andy and voted for him.

I think it's highly patronising to attribute his victory to the "Scottish vote". What crap.

I'm another one who had never heard of Tyson Fury before all the nonsense in the press. I do love sport, but boxing isn't on my radar

derxa · 21/12/2015 18:46

Paula Radcliffe is an annoying PITA. If Brendan Foster goes on about her one more time I will chuck a brick at the telly.

AyeAmarok · 21/12/2015 18:51

Did anyone hear the (I think) BBC interviewer on the red carpet ask Jessica Ennis-Hill if she was "flattered" by Tyson Fury's comments?! WTAF! Angry I might complain.

Andy is a worthy winner. So would Jess have been, and Greg Rutherford too. I'd have been happy if any of them won.

DioneTheDiabolist · 21/12/2015 18:52

I know the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. It was well deserved.Xmas Grin

derxa · 21/12/2015 19:09

Dionne I love people like that. They're the salt of the Earth.

2rebecca · 21/12/2015 19:58

There's training abroad and there's not having been born in the UK, having few ties to the UK, a foreign spouse and never looking likely to return to the UK.
People like Andy Murray, Mark Cavendish (Isle of Man not in UK but its citizens are British citizens), Paula Radcliffe, Liz McColgan and Bradley Wiggins trained abroad but always behaved as though the UK / Britain was really their home and supported local sporting events.

furryleopard · 21/12/2015 20:10

We voted Kevin Sinfield in our house- his work ethic, commitment and dedication to rugby league on and off field as well as his leadership skills make him a worthy winner. I'm glad he came second.

I also admire Lizzie Jones, who sang during the obits, what she has been through this year is horrific yet what she has achieved and how she has conducted herself is truely inspirational. She is a credit to her family and a credit to rugby league.

We've gone back to hating Leeds in our house though now.

derxa · 21/12/2015 20:15

furry Kevin Sinfield came over brilliantly. I know nothing about RL but he sounded inspirational.

oneowlgirl · 21/12/2015 21:22

I'm late to the thread (as I always am on Telly Addicts due to watching everything delayed Smile).

I really wanted JE-H to win as I think her achievements have been fantastic & to manage it all so soon after having a baby is truly phenomenal. It's not patronising at all to say that - it is different than returning to most other jobs as being good at her job is both very physical & mental.

I'm pleased Andy won though & pleased for the Davis cup team. I think it's a very British thing to downplay achievements - they won the tournament, simple as that, doesn't matter what would have happened had other teams fielded different players - they didn't, so it's not a relevant question.

Never heard of Kevin Sinfield but agree with pp, he seems very inspirational & actually played his clip for my DSs as think his message is such an important one.

Also disappointed that TF came 4th - shocking, although according to my DH, if he'd kept his mouth shut then he might have won it as he thinks his achievement is fantastic (I'm not a boxing fan so couldn't really comment)?

Greg Rutherford should have had more votes but something about him bugs me - seems to have a real chip on his shoulder??

I loved it being in NI though as I'm from Belfast & loved all the references to home & especially Michael O'Neill

derxa · 21/12/2015 21:25

So annoying. Always moaning that he doesn't get his fair share of ads endorsements etc.

AyeAmarok · 21/12/2015 21:30

Glad someone else said this. He really annoyed me with his attitude after the Olympics. His moaning was very unbecoming.

However, he seems to have his head screwed on a bit more these days and he has done very well in the competitions since, so I'm willing to let his earlier faux pas go...

oneowlgirl · 21/12/2015 21:51

I never really heard his moaning, at least not consciously, so perhaps I did without realising & that's stayed with me.

I read about his partner being trolled after what he said about TF & big attending - disgusting that they'd pick on her!! (Not that I'd agree with picking on him, but presumably he'd have been happy to stand by his comments.).

oneowlgirl · 21/12/2015 21:52

'Not', not 'big'. This autocorrect does my head in as even when things are spelt correctly, it changes my words!!!

ComposHatComesBack · 22/12/2015 00:56

It shouldn't be about their bubbly personalities or GSOH

It isn't, it is and always has been about sporting achievement. In this context personality means 'person from the world of sport' not 'most dashing or gregarious.' The competition was first held in the mid-1950s, hence the slightly antiquated phrasing.

Horsemad · 22/12/2015 08:34

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Bailey Matthews who win the Helen Rollason Award Shock

Now, he is truly inspirational! What a character too! Grin
