Obviously I'd have rather he'd won but I'm absolutely chuffed to bits that Sir Kev came second, especially as the voting was so close Grin

TheGirlFromIpanema · 21/12/2015 01:05

I wish Sinny had won and voted a few times, but knew Murry would get it when his profile was on last before voting opened Angry

fussychica · 21/12/2015 09:15

Can you believe Tyson Fury came 4th? That's the great British public for you!

Behooven · 21/12/2015 09:43

That's a shocker!

hellocleveland · 21/12/2015 09:49

Does anyone know where I can find the voting figures?
Being a massive cycling fan I voted for Lizzie and Chris but knew neither would win anything. Really happy for Murray and Davis cup team. Well deserved.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 21/12/2015 09:52

Nearly 80 thousand votes for that idiot. Weird.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 21/12/2015 09:54

Hope this works Cleveland.

Thanks very much Ipanema! Crikey, Murray and Sinfield were way out in front weren't they.

bojorojo · 21/12/2015 11:02

My comment on AP was tongue in cheek!!!! I have known AP since he first came over and rode for Toby Balding. I also think doing sport does not mean people cannot take an interest in all sports. One does not need to be blinkered. Is Jessica E-H really so unusual in being a mum and dong a job? Mum goes back to work - is that a headline achievement? Many before her have done so at the highest level and won.

tthisisgettingboring · 21/12/2015 11:27

Of course it's amazing, she didn't just go back to doing a part time job in accounts.

Horrified that the boxing misogynist came 4th Angry.

BertrandRussell · 21/12/2015 11:35

Fuck me, the bastard came 4th. Shoot me now.

tthisisgettingboring · 21/12/2015 11:39

So depressing when Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah came so much further down the voting, not to mention Lizzie A. Who the hell voted for him??

Behooven · 21/12/2015 12:31

ican
I bet I could hazard a guess

2rebecca · 21/12/2015 12:49

I didn't say people who competed in sports couldn't take an interest in all sports just that that was a reason i didn't. I'm not blinkered but I have other interests besides sport. There is only just so much time in life.
I also disagree with your feeling that only people who know about the huge range of sports available in the UK and all the contenders for the SPOTY award can comment on this thread.

penguinsarecool · 21/12/2015 12:53

Yes Andy Murray helped win the Davis Cup, but that was a team effort, for single sportsperson achievement then i think Chris Froome should have won. Tyson Fury probably would have been in with a decent shout if he didn't go round being a twat.

bojorojo · 21/12/2015 13:46

Yes, 2rebecca, but if people do not know what the candidates have done, then they are not really evaluating their contribution to sport (setting aside personality for a moment). Of course anyone can comment but my argument was meant to be wider than commenting on this thread.

The more we think going back to work, even if it is sport, and doing well is a massive achievement, we reinforce the view that women in general are not expected to be high achievers after children. JE-H should be the norm and women should not disparage other women who go back to be an accounts assistant. Their child-care arrangements and job are just as important to them, just less high profile. In fact, they may well get less help than JE-H who has a husband and family close at hand, not to mention plenty of £££ in the bank. We have had numerous equestrian women go back and high profile tennis players in the past.

TF is of Gypsy heritage and therefore there is an arguement to be had about minority groups. Would we rather he did not open his mouth and everyone thought he was lovely? Or are we to have cultures who are never be heard because they are unsavoury? What about some Islamic cultures? If we do not know what they think, we cannot challenge them. It is vital that we do.

Have we forgotten about this woman?

derxa · 21/12/2015 14:58

Why do sports people have to be 'personalities' anyway?

Djangor · 21/12/2015 15:10

Agree with bojo. I was happy with Andy Murray winning, but the Davis Cup is a team event & even though he may be the reason we won & I'm sure was hugely inspirational to the rest of the team, he didn't think he was in the running for the BBC award. Would have liked Jessica to win as the heptathlon is an exceptional event to win, I don't think a british woman has ever won more than once before & only a couple of women in the world have done so & Jessica's world championship win was stunning - she was 1st in 6 out of the 7 events. BBC's coverage seemed to suggest to me that the main reason we should be voting for her was because she won something after having a baby - stunningly patronising.

ThePerfect1IThinkNot · 21/12/2015 15:11

Maybe they should be "achiever" rather than "personality"?

derxa · 21/12/2015 15:27

They went on in the same way about Jo Pavey.

GinandJag · 21/12/2015 15:27

I voted for Andy :)

derxa · 21/12/2015 15:30

So did I Gin and I have never voted ever before. If I told the reason then it would not be popular on here.

GinandJag · 21/12/2015 15:40

Intrigued, derxa.

I think there are lots of reasons to vote for Murray. Winning the Davis Cup is the obvious one, but it's not just because the other top players don't compete. He made Davis Cup a priority - to put his country ahead of his own personal gain. He encouraged and inspired his team-mates.

He is extremely humble and modest, never seeking the limelight like some sportsmen. He is an incredible supporter and ambassador of a couple of charities.

He deserves the win on achievement and personality.

derxa · 21/12/2015 15:42

Agree Gin. He's so normal and geeky as well.
