Oh god this is good!

Baressentials · 01/01/2016 22:10

I am about half an hour behind - had to pause it.
Eek this is good. Giving me the heebie jeebies tho.

CaveMum · 01/01/2016 22:26

I'm so glad they managed to keep all this stuff secret!

TeaandHobnobs · 01/01/2016 22:32

My head hurts...

firefly78 · 01/01/2016 22:34

NorksAreMessy · 01/01/2016 22:37

I NEED MORE!

CaveMum · 01/01/2016 22:38

Loved it! Hopefully only 1 year to wait this time!

Travelledtheworld · 01/01/2016 22:39

Not what I expected.
It was all a bit smug.
But can anyone tell me was the Carmichael family home, the National Trust owned Tyntesfield near Bristol ?

PerspicaciaTick · 01/01/2016 22:39

I am going to have to watch that again Confused

SpecialistSnowflake · 01/01/2016 22:40

That ended up kind of underwhelming weirdly. It was gripping until a certain point, then it suddenly tipped over into being ridiculous amateurish fan-wank.

Plus I'm disappointed that it seems Moriarty won't be back. I'm guessing the women in the church represent criminals who are going to be hiding behind Moriarty's identity - so, not as good as actual Moriarty...

Tokelau · 01/01/2016 22:42

travelledtheworld yes it was. I thought it was Margam House and looked it up, but I was wrong.

Hassled · 01/01/2016 22:45

On Twitter - "Is Sherlock mansplaining feminism?" :o

Great to see Moriarty again. I did really enjoy that - so cleverly done.

CaveMum · 01/01/2016 22:45

They filmed quite a bit in Bristol. The sets are in Cardiff so it's easy for them to travel. According to Twitter the morgue scenes were filmed in the vaults under the Colston Hall

VikingLady · 01/01/2016 22:45

A lot of the theories after S3 had Moriarty being a frontman for a real Napoleon of Crime. All women, though I never noticed that before! Mary, Janine and Sherlock's mum (my favourite). This does tie in with that.

VikingLady · 01/01/2016 22:48

I was very disappointed with the parody feeling in the first section, but it made more sense as Sherlock's imagination!

Travelledtheworld · 01/01/2016 22:50

Thanks Tokelau and Cavemum
I used to work in Clifton and I always enjoy location spotting.

Travelledtheworld · 01/01/2016 22:51

I luffs Martin and Dominic, but Andrew Scott he's brilliant isn't he ?

Rhubarb01 · 01/01/2016 22:51

Agree it was Tyntesfield. DD and I recognised the turret in the bedroom and the drawing room and hall. I think the shooting scene in the street looked as if it was filmed in Bath. Interesting about the Colston Hall having vaults like that!

YeOldeTrout · 01/01/2016 22:53

wait, was Sherlock's mom one of the women in purple robes?

Hassled · 01/01/2016 22:53

I always like the references to the Conan Doyle stories - the Five Orange Pips story is about the KKK, hence the robes.

VikingLady · 01/01/2016 23:19

YeOldeTrout I don't think so, just a reference to S3

harryhausen · 01/01/2016 23:32

I loved it. A whole episode (virtually) inside Sherlocks mind palace. Fab.

I can't believe anyone actually^ thinks Moriaty is really alive though?^ The blew his brains out in front of us. Not quite the same as Sherlock staging a fall.

S4 not even begun filming yet. I'm in Bristol and saw a lot of the Victorian carriages off Queens square. When I heard it was Sherlock I was very confused and thought it must be a quick flashback to something. Didn't realise it was the whole episode!

SpecialistSnowflake · 02/01/2016 02:09

I need to watch it again. Total headfuck of an episode, which can't be bad really.

I am both very pleased with and quite cross at the special. The end where Watson shoves Moriarty off the waterfall and then Sherlock does a slow motion swan dive kind of thing into it felt very Doctor Who.

I loved the Victorian part and I was thrilled when I realized it had come back to modern times Sherlock, but then as it went on I got less thrilled. I was delighted to see Moriarty back, less so when it became patently obvious it was a dreamlike Moriarty.

In terms of plot it comes down to little more than Sherlock leaving the plane. It was explained that Sherlock was attempting to work out how Moriarty faked his death (and it was confirmed that no body was found) with the body-switch scenario, etc, yet he decides at the end that Moriarty is actually dead after all, so nothing much was gained.

If Moriarty is dead, as they keep stressing, then Moffat and Gatiss need to make their peace with it and stop writing mind palace scenes and flashbacks for him. He's been featured in three episodes out of four since his death...

Mrscaindingle · 02/01/2016 11:09

I loved this and really don't mind if plot devices are contrived to bring Moriarty back as I think Andrew Scott is brilliant and I love watching his Moriarty.

I loved all the in jokes, Mrs Hudson complaining about having no dialogue in Watsons stories and the Victorian Sherlock plucking imaginary newspaper clippings from the air.

YeOldeTrout · 02/01/2016 11:24

It was lots like the last few episodes of Dr. Who, with tonnes of self referential content & circular plots. I suppose that's artistic, but imho, it doesn't make for great entertainment.
