A new three part drama, Capital, starts on BBC 1 on 24th November and is expected to be one for all those London lovers.

In the new series, the residents of an affluent south London street struggle with their health, financial and family problems behind closed doors, watched by secretive artist Smitty, who has his own connection to the road.

The community is wary and stunned when dwellers each receive a note bearing the words `We Want What You Have', through their letterboxes, but in due course begin to see their lives transformed.

Toby Jones, Lesley Sharp, Wunmi Mosaku and Adeel Akhtar star in Peter Bowker's adaptation of John Lanchester's critically acclaimed novel.

I lived the book and thought the first episode of the to prog was good BUT Toby Jobesbis miscast. He's really good but simply doesn't look the part and in this role I think it matters.

It's been bugging me where I know Rachel Sterling (Arabella) from, finally I got it, she was Millie in The Bletchley Circle.

Clawdy · 27/11/2015 14:01

Davros what does he look like in the book?

ProfYaffle · 27/11/2015 14:04

I enjoyed it though as a Dectorists fan, it was most unnerving to see Lance and Becky as a couple - that's all kinds of wrong!

sadwidow28 · 27/11/2015 14:53

Did anyone notice that Matya (the nanny from the agency who appeared at the end of episode one) is the actress who plays Sara (Danny's flatmate) in London Spy.

Clawdy The Independent reviewer commented on Toby Jones not fitting with the description of the Roger Yount character in the book. Apparently,

"Lanchester (author) painted him as a good-looking, nice-but-dim banker, who would be partial to wearing mustard-coloured corduroys on a shooting weekend."

Aah, right.......

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 27/11/2015 20:44

Does anyone have any idea of the location for Alex/Alastair's family home?

Davros · 28/11/2015 10:04

What entertainment.... said Grin

glamorousgrandmother · 28/11/2015 10:20

The book also keeps referring to the fact that Roger is very tall.

It's obvious that a lot will have to be cut from the book to fit into a three part series but I'm sorry that Freddy Kamo, the footballer from Senegal seems to have been missed out as he was so totally uninterested in money it was a good antidote to the Younts.

DeoGratias · 28/11/2015 10:26

In real life though in the City I have worked with a ton of banker types just like this ugly fat chap who marry well above their own looks category because of women wanting to live off a richer man. In that sense he is well cast.

southeastdweller · 28/11/2015 11:16

There's nobody with those names in Capital - do you mean the character who died in London Spy?

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 28/11/2015 11:32

Oops yes, I typed on the wrong thread, sorry about that.
I'm on both threads and totally hadn't noticed Blush

ClashOfUsernames · 28/11/2015 22:58

I just watched this on catch up so marking my place for the next episode.

southeastdweller · 29/11/2015 12:51

Agree Toby Jones is miscast in this role as Roger. I get that Arabella has 'married down' in terms of looks but the contrast between them is too strong to take seriously in a drama like this - it would work in a comedy, though. I can't quite believe him as a banker, either.

Moanranger · 30/11/2015 19:59

I found Toby believable in the role -and I like the Detectorists - a sign of good acting. I lived in Clapham ( South) until 2013 amongst all the bankers & they are far more likely to look like Toby than to be tall, handsome & fit!
I absolutely loved Arabella's riposte on the thrift lecture in bed- the litany of all her "essentials". True to life, absolutely loathsome people & why I am SO GLAD I no longer live amongst them!
As far as location, I recognise Clapham Common & Battersea Park & some of the house frontages look like the Hever Estate. Also Balham High Road, SW of the train station. Very cleaned up for filming though, usually much dirtier & shabby & obviously filmed in summer - defo not at Xmas!

Ooh We'll be watching again. Probably catch up with it tomorrow though.

I had no expectations at all and only watched it by chance, but we both thought it was promising. I'm intrigued enough to want to read the book now.

I'm finding less and less that interests me these days on tv, so this was a surprise. Also Dh and I love the Detectorists and seeing Toby Jones married to Rachael Stirling in this is very strange Confused.

DDog has been walked, I have to nebulise now as it was so cold walking in a tail-end of some Storm or other! (I think it was Clodagh tonight) If I start now I will be able to watch without the humming of the nebuliser.

DDog thinks he won the day! 16.5 yrs old and he is still ruling the roost. He did all the 'sad I'm dying stuff' today so I phoned the vet to do a call-out tomorrow to increase his arthritis medication. DDog is now bouncing around like a puppy!

GRRRR! But I still lubs DDog.

I'll catch you when I have my nebuliser pumping.

I'm in.

Loving mother by laptop.
Eeek at the sudden visit.

Rollergirl1 · 01/12/2015 21:30

How would those packages get through the post office and security if there is already a known potential security risk in that road and the police are already involved? Would be the same postman delivering them all! Totally unrealistic.

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 01/12/2015 21:33

Not in our neck of the woods, the royal mail's gone totally feral round here.

ENtertainmentAppreciated · 01/12/2015 22:04

That was quite a full episode. I feel full of emotion after it. Anyone else?
RIP Petunia.
