A new three part drama, Capital, starts on BBC 1 on 24th November and is expected to be one for all those London lovers.

In the new series, the residents of an affluent south London street struggle with their health, financial and family problems behind closed doors, watched by secretive artist Smitty, who has his own connection to the road.

The community is wary and stunned when dwellers each receive a note bearing the words `We Want What You Have', through their letterboxes, but in due course begin to see their lives transformed.

Toby Jones, Lesley Sharp, Wunmi Mosaku and Adeel Akhtar star in Peter Bowker's adaptation of John Lanchester's critically acclaimed novel.

i really enjoyed it, loved toby young and his wife,

sadwidow28 · 25/11/2015 07:53

Well, I have just watched it again on iplayer. I think I understand it more this time.

I wonder if Mark has got a bigger bonus than Roger (£30,000) as the 'bright young thing' is seen as more effective than his boss now. Roger was rather scathing about him to the German banker. I am just not buying the excuse that the volatility in the Swiss subsidiarity caused a genuine loss and affected Roger's bonus to that extent.

Quentina (the asylum seeker) has really touched me. I felt so sorry for Mashinko when Quentina didn't turn up again for the church service. I thought that was a love-story in the making.

The Kamals are a very interesting family: the brothers are all so different.

The Younts are such a dysfunctional family in spite of their high income. Arabella's one-liners are really funny.

I thought Graham (Petunia's grandson) was the one in the hoody leaving the postcards but then he took his grandmother's collection, so that confused me.

I'll be tuning in for next week.

Checking in - I loved it - intriguing and well acted. Also a nict change from all the dark police stuff around at the moment.

LatinForTelly · 25/11/2015 10:03

Yes Stella67, what was with the trees?! That really bugged me!

I am intrigued by it; I'd never heard of the book. Blush

It makes me nostalgic about London and my youth though .

Elendon · 25/11/2015 10:26

I enjoyed watching this. It's a little different from the book, won't say anymore, because that would be spoiling it.

Loved the acting, setting - I too feel sad not be in London any longer, ah the memories of those very hot summers of the early 90s.

I love the graphic when each month, the price of the property goes up! Shall be looking forward to next week.

Loolah · 25/11/2015 11:11

Loved it, I'm going to watch it again on iplayer. Can someone let me know more details about the book please? Is it called Capital and who is the author.

eddiemairswife · 25/11/2015 11:14

Capital by John Lanchester.

DeoGratias · 25/11/2015 14:08

It's really good. It's funny too and they characters are well done.

Panicmode1 · 25/11/2015 14:45

I watched it and really enjoyed it last night - makes a change from the crime drama that seems to be everywhere.

I haven't read the book so am going to do that now. Agree with the poster who said Gemma Jones is playing a similar character again - she seems to be a bit ubiquitous at the moment!

sadwidow28 · 25/11/2015 15:10

Can I give a special thanks to Clawdy who alerted me to the computer hacker being Mark (the bright young executive in Roger's Dept). I thought it was Graham (Petunia's grandson) because he wears a hoody as well.

I simply missed that connection. And the hacking happened BEFORE the £30,000 bonus was paid because Roger and Arabella were in the park with Joshua and Conrad whilst the hacking happened. I wonder what files Mark changed on the computer once he got the passwords.

And did you see Mark's face when there was a folder called 'passwords'. "Stupid old man. I knew you'd save them here!" was written all over Mark's face.

Now you see Clawdy, this is now making even more sense to me. Thank you.

Yes, I assumed he hates his boss and I am guessing he is doing something like rogue trading but in the name of his boss who will ultimately get the sack.

sadwidow28 · 25/11/2015 15:38

DeoGratias So possibly Mark has something to do with the Swedish subsidiary under-performing (which was the reason that the German banker gave to Roger for his £30,000 bonus).

Hedge funds?

I know that the passwords referred to AC# so Mark will have been able to move money from one account to another.

It is all making more sense now. Thanks everyone.

I am always bad at working out TV plots so don't go by anything I have to say. May be he moved money to his own account and is pretending it was done by his boss. I think it's a bit early to tell . I hope the banker can help the traffic warden's boyfriend find out where she is.

fuzzpig · 25/11/2015 15:47

marking place, thought this looked good. haven't read the book.

FiveShelties · 25/11/2015 16:26

I enjoyed it too, and went looking for the book for my Kindle - logged into Amazon and found I purchased it in 2013 for the princely sum of 20 pence. Will get around to reading it now.

eddiemairswife · 25/11/2015 17:02

Having read the book recently I found it helped me to follow what was happening, especially with Mark and the computer. I still think they could have made it a six-parter.

NoahVale · 25/11/2015 18:25

i completely missed that hacker bit. will have to rewatch on iplayer.

cherrytree63 · 25/11/2015 18:29

I'm going to rewatch as I was nodding off (as usual when I try to watch anything after 9pm Blush. But enjoyed seeing bits of Balham where I grew up!

I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. Think it might be my new favourite watch - just pipping London Spy Grin

HoomanBean · 26/11/2015 21:34

I thought it was quite intruiging too. The banker initially seemed a bit of a wander but I warmed to him a little bit as it progressed.

Wonder what's troubling Gran? (Can't remember names sorry)

Was quite pleased to see Ira again. (From River. Sorry, too early for me to remember any names. I'm useless at it in RL too)
