Just that really ..... probably going to put me off, just in time for one to open 10mins drive away!

Their minced meat always goes off the next day when I bring it home. TBH there was a documentary in Germany when we lived there that was about Aldi not storing or ensuring adequate storage of meat before sale. I really should learn.

Nappies are great though

JellyBaby26 · 10/11/2015 15:28

Never had an issue with sell by dates.

We had an online morrisons shop delivered and the sausages had a 2 day use by date! How ridiculous!

EssentialHummus · 10/11/2015 15:32

ShelfStacker that's all interesting, thanks for that!

Clawdy · 10/11/2015 15:34

Interesting,Shelfstacker. No complaints at all about our local Aldi, and I did feel sorry for some of the featured employees. It was easy to identify them, l'm sure, and I really hope nobody loses their job. Unless really major issues are at stake, I hate this sort of undercover filming.

Seriouslyffs · 10/11/2015 15:36

Total non story. I'm sure they could have dredged up some bad practice footage from any corporation.

Tiggeryoubastard · 10/11/2015 15:43

If they wanted to make a real programme about shameful practices they should do one on Morrisons. Smacks a bit of (poor) propaganda, this one.

PuppyMonkey · 10/11/2015 15:58

You're doing a great job ShelfStacker - the staff in my local one are all lovely and I'm the same as you now, can't abide going through the tediously slow checkout at Tesco or Asda. Grin

IrianofWay · 10/11/2015 16:01

Agree with puppy. Aldi staff are some of the friendliest and most efficient anywhere. I don't want a 'retail experience' I want to get in, do my shopping and get out within 30 mins.

steve5jmc · 10/11/2015 16:08

Twatbyname. Oh dear there you go making this personal again. Did I call you a liar? Yes or no? We can let others decide, if they can be bothered looking back at all the messages, I doubt it though because it's not worth wasting time over. I have nothing against you personally, we're all entitled to our own opinion and that's all I was giving. The staff in our local Aldi are all lovely, I don't like the "rush you through" checkout thing but even that wouldn't be a problem either had the quality of food that i've purchased there been any good but quite frankly anything i've tried has been pants. Sorry for being so honest but there you go

wanderingwondering · 10/11/2015 16:21

Never had a problem with aldi. I get a full weekly shop including wine and cleaning products for around £50.
Actually, I did have a problem once-some flatbread went mouldy before use by date so I took it back and they gave me a refund. Then the same thing happened again so I checked the packet carefully and found it should have been stored in the fridge oops.

We did a full aldi Christmas dinner last year and it was fab. Will be doing that again this year

WoodleyPixie · 10/11/2015 17:25

I couldn't be bothered to go to the supermarket last week so did an online shop with waitrose, well I won't bother again! 12 substitution (the driver was embarrassed listing go them all kept saying sorry) 2 items out of stock with no alternative. Then when loading into the fridge I noticed that several of the meat items had best before dates of that day meaning I had to freeze them, when I'd have preferred not to as didn't want to have to remember to defrost them.

Several of the vegetables were mushy by Sunday and the fruit wasn't great either. I was really surprised as usually waitrose is expected to have great quality. I've had to go to Aldi this evening to shop. So not only has it not saved me any time it cost me a lot more, the shop was £110 and I've just spent £60 at Aldi. Usually spend £70 ish in Aldi or lidl for a full weeks shop.

BrianCoxReborn · 10/11/2015 17:50

I didn't see this thread last night, but indie make a FB status to the same affect, that it was a non-story.

How on earth did the production team get away with handing that in for review? Did the channel 4 scheduling team actually watch the content?

It was such a non-event and the "big" revelation about staff having to come into work 15 mins before shift - whoopdeedoo! Every job I've had, I've been expected to be sat at my desk at my start time with my computer on and all programmes running (as that used to take 10 mins alone, I had to do it pre-start time).

I'm hoping that people who shop there but haven't watched the program, but assume it was full of dead mice in bread and dog carcasses in the meat store, will be put off enough to not shop there anymore thus giving me free range of the store and fewer queues. Like it used to be Grin

(Obviously that would lead to staff cuts so I don't actually want that)

Rascaltashly · 10/11/2015 20:31

Dh works for Aldi and was shouting at the TV. Aldi don't buy other supermarket's leftover veg, they have their own suppliers, quality checks etc. Perhaps the way the veg is stored (lots of people too lazy to take it out of the plastic bag) has a lot to do with it going off. The "expert" used to run Iceland, Aldi's main competitors.

BrianCoxReborn · 10/11/2015 23:00

I knew there'd be an angle from the program makers and there it is. Mr ex-Iceland.

I'm so pleased that people saw it for what it was.

Wendy1964 · 11/11/2015 11:54

Just watched the programme on demand. I think it's shocking how the staff are treated. If Aldi get away with disregarding health & safety it could be your workplace next. I think it's sad that customers feel they're not worth a better service. I don't shop at Aldi's after checking ingredients, Tesco is much healthier with lower sugar & saturated fat content in their food. It's just as cheap as Aldi if you avoid big brand names.

LookAtMeGo · 11/11/2015 14:47

I thought the documentary was 30 mins of my life I won't get back:

'In the news today. A supermarket employee threw some bread on the shelf'.Hmm

I worked for Tesco as a teenager and the stories I could tell you of the goings on there would make much better telly!

I couldn't believe the reporter put his face to this Shock

specialsubject · 11/11/2015 15:58

'Tesco is much healthier with lower sugar & saturated fat content in their food'

yes, that will really affect the veg (Fresh and tinned) cereals, cleaning materials, cheese and all the other things I buy...

Rascaltashly · 11/11/2015 19:54

Seriously? You had time to check ALL Aldi products for sugar and saturated fat compared to Tesco?

The health and safety issues brought up in the programme aren't representative of the company- some idiot chooses to disregard health and safety guidlines to climb on a shelf/freezer and gets hurt- well that's why the manual will say not to. Same goes for the blocked fire exits- Aldi won't condone this, but the managers at the stores with blocked exits have made the choice to do so and will probably have been sacked now.

kennybones · 13/11/2015 10:50

I have found quite the oppsoite but with asda everytime i have compared an items sugar salt or staurated fat content i almost always find aldi is lower in ever dept

i have noticed that asda try to be quite sneaky by lowering the per gram content so it looks on face value thats they are quite good but gram for gram they are ussualy higher.

I never shop i tesco i find their own brand food quite discusting and way over priced.

Blueeyedjen · 04/12/2015 15:35

I can walk into any supermarket and find loads of ood products I use to work for sainsburys and there were loads they would only visually check dates on items that the computer system says there might be ood products on. The food is exactly the same in Aldi as other shops I.e the frozen breaded chickens etc come from Bernard Mathews, most of the biscuits are made by mcvities and last year we got sent aload of sainsburys ttd turkeys instead of Aldis showing that they come from exactly the same supplier but instead of paying £20 a bird you pay £12!

patcass · 03/02/2016 11:34

There's a new app just launched that converts the week and date code Aldi uses as a display until date.
