Is that any different from Kathy's Story (same author)?

this one is the one that haunts me - all about a midwife in the catholic unmarried mothers homes... I think because it is all so close to home iyswim

calebsmum · 01/12/2006 20:45

Nearly gave up watching when Rose was screaming for her baby and they just took him away, gave up finally a few minutes later when her milk came in and she was sobbing in the toilets! Poor poor girls and poor babies, how you'd move on with your lift after experiencing that i don't know.

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 20:48

anyone know if they ever had an apology from the catholic church?

i suppose some of the nuns must still be alive who carried out these attrocities (sp) wonder how they live with themselves?

tiredemma · 01/12/2006 20:56

no formal apology has ever been made mosschops as far as i am aware.

I have the book somewhere, if you would like to borrow it let me know and ill gladly forward it to you.

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 01/12/2006 20:58

Oh CM I've gone cold reading that

Think I'm glad I did miss it...

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 20:58

tiredemma that would be fab, would love to read it. I'll swap you for Gods Callgirl which i am currently not enjoying, when I've finished it if you like

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 20:59

think its disgusting that this has never been acknowledged although dont know why i'm suprised. Only the church could get away with abusing people for years and then refusing to admit anything.

And before you all start having a go at me, I'm catholic

tiredemma · 01/12/2006 21:20

unfortunatly boys faired no better under the catholic church - there is a book ( and I just cannot think of the title) about young boy orphans shipped off to austrailia in the 1950's. Horrific stories as bad as the magdelene laundries, of abuse etc at the hands of the priests.

I will root that book out mosschops and cat you, i have a feeling it is behind the xmas pressies hidden under the bed.

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 21:23

brilliant thanks

yes i know people who suffered at the hands of the Christian Brothers in Ireland, and are still haunted now

tiredemma · 01/12/2006 21:27

The boys one is something like 'The Bindoon boys@ or something like that, google it- it should come up.horrific.

will post that book to you, but will be after xmas if thats ok ( im sure you have studying to do anyway??

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 21:36

ha ha yeah thanks, I'm just making the most of mn before i spent the next 7 days re-doing my assignment in time for hand in. Didnt realise you were doing the same but saw you on other thread, where are you?

anyway CAT me when you get chance and we'll swap the books

tiredemma · 01/12/2006 21:43

Im at Birmingham Uni, I love it ( at the mo- but it is only my first term!) Im on placement at the mo with the Health visitors, which has been fantastic. Next placement is in feb ( mental health ) I love the practical stuff, I HATE all of the theory at uni. Where are you at? is it Cardiff? ( it is in wales isnt it where you study?) what branch are you?

will cat you once 'father christmas' has cleared out under the bed!

expatinscotland · 01/12/2006 21:44

I caught it by chance.

It was good, but depressing.

expatinscotland · 01/12/2006 21:44

It's one of those films you really only need watch once.

tiredemma · 01/12/2006 21:45

Did you see 'Sinners' on bbc? very similar ( in that it was about the laundries)

you are right expat, it hits you hard enough to only have to watch it once.

DelGirlsRingAreYouListening · 01/12/2006 21:46

I saw it a couple of years ago and sobbed it was so sad and to think it was only 30 years ago is so shocking. Didn't watch it last night though.

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 21:49

agree its not the kind of film you want to buy on dvd, but certainly one that everyone should see. The bit with the baby just tears my heart out.

Yes tiredemma in Cardiff, 2nd year now adult branch, its getting harder and I'm floundering a bit but hanging on in there. Know what you mean about placements tho, they are great but i like Uni just for the rest

expatinscotland · 01/12/2006 21:52

A friend of my ex h's was one of those Irish babies given up for adoption.

He's 44 now.

His mother didn't tell him until he was 32 - his dad had died, but he always had this strange attraction to Ireland and never could figure out why.

It took him 7 years, but he found his mother! Got his Irish passport and now lives outside Limerick, married an Irish woman, and looks after his ma.

christmosschops30 · 01/12/2006 22:04

expat thats lovely and so great that he managed to find his birth mother. I know a lot of the births werent even recorded were they?

expatinscotland · 01/12/2006 22:11

He had to hire a team of private detectives, one team in the US and one in Ireland.

He also had two lawyers.

Still, he wasn't sure if she'd want to know him, or if she was still alive, but he just wanted to know that part of who he was.

They actually found his half-brother first, so Bob contacted him first to sort of test the waters. Luckily, the brother knew his mother had had a baby when she was a teen.

The brother and his family were delighted, and he learned that his birth mother would be, too. She was only 15 when she'd had him.

He'd never had any brothers or sisters growing up and was thrilled to find them.
