Travesty.
Apart from every other single mangling of the book, the scientist friend reminds me of Tom Parker Bowles.

Like good undemanding 'warm bath' Sunday night series, like Poirot and Marple, but this is so poor it's impossible to relax and enjoy it.

Agree with others a major - the major - problem for me is that David W can't act for toffee. The character is indeed bovine and totally charisma and chemistry free. He should stick to BGT which I don't watch and writing children's stories, which apparently sell well.

The BBC should stop encouraging his self indulgence in this tosh.

Hygellig · 23/08/2015 22:09

In tonight's episode, Mrs Sprott addressed Tommy as Mr Beresford. Is this a hint that his cover is blown or an acting error?

I'm putting up with the occasionally ropey acting and far-fetched plot as it's escapism for Sunday night.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/08/2015 22:31

And the costumes are nice Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 24/08/2015 12:53

fishbones, am catching up on iPlayer but I believe I am doing what is known in modern parlance as 'hatewatching'. Will do that with you. Want to do a spot of fantasy casting if the BBC ever decided to do it properly?

Hepzibar, you don't like it, because T&T bear absolutely no resemblance to AC's T&T so it is all wrong.

I think I could quite enjoy it if it weren't supposed to be Agatha Christie based but it is mangling my Tommy and Tuppence beyond all recognition.

MrsWembley · 30/08/2015 22:17

I have actually come searching for a thread on this because I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo disappointed. Christie must be turning in her grave.Sad

I have read the books but it was years ago, so I cannot comment on the plots. I am, however, fairly confident in my assessment that the whole thing is complete crap. I have very fond memories of all the books (born and bred just around the corner to her holiday home and brought up with the idea of her being all that is wonderfulWink), and have no memory of Tommy being so wet or so useless and Tuppence being so dithery and reckless.

Tonight's final attempt at watching left me speechless complaining like fuck to DP with the bit of nonsense in the hallway that looked like they were (in DP's words) trying to hide a vicar in a wardrobe, but I was actually shouting at the screen when Tommy stood like a wet fucking lettuce in the same hallway instead of running off into the sunset with the goods!

Anyway, rant over, thank-you. I'm glad it's not just me...

Nettletheelf · 31/08/2015 01:53

It's not. DH and I were grumpy at the end of tonight's episode. What a let down! No proper denouement!

Why did the commander do Sprott's dirty work and what happened to him after she died?

Who was the scary blonde lady (not Sprott, the assassin one)

How did Sprott end up working for the Russians? Not many disgruntled girlfriends turn to espionage, kidnapping and murder.

Who was major Khan at the Sans Souci to punish? He said that somebody had 'brought him to his knees' in the past. Who? How? It was never explained!

Badly done, BBC. David Walliams is a terrible actor. Jessica Raine is quite good. I feel sorry for her, having to act opposite that buffoon.

polyhymnia · 31/08/2015 10:12

Quite agree . However hard she tries it can never come to life with him in that central role.

ISaySteadyOn · 31/08/2015 13:13

MrsWembley, you recall correctly. Tommy was neither wet nor useless in the books. He was, in fact, extremely competent and useful.

Tuppence was always a bit reckless but not dithery. And she was very clever.

Squooshed · 31/08/2015 14:22

I've really enjoyed the series. I don't suppose they'll make a second but hey-ho!

MrsWembley · 31/08/2015 15:10

Oh, for the love of god, don't let them make another series!

Maybe if we all write snotty letters to Auntie Beeb, the idea will fall flat on it's great big, ugly face!

Fishboneschokus · 04/09/2015 10:51

Does anyone know the origin of 'go rogue'?

The bridge scene in ' cards on the table' was also flawed.

Thank you for 'hate watching'

Sounds like they are planning another...

(Incidentally, is cat amongst pigeons available?)

Tommy is 'ugly' and Prudence never wore hats ( unlike Mrs Blenkinsop)

I want Tuppence's wardrobe .

I suspect you have to be stick-thin to look good in her clothes though.

She seems to have an awful lot of beautiful outfits for someone whose husband is struggling to eke out a living from keeping bees and 'filing' the bills in the bin Hmm.

woodhill · 06/09/2015 15:11

I'm watching now, they are hopeless but quite like it. Love her costumes. Was it normal to be married and not share a double bed in the 50s as in the Beresford household.
