Travesty.
Apart from every other single mangling of the book, the scientist friend reminds me of Tom Parker Bowles.

I had enjoyed it so much and tonight's episode was such a let down. Slow, dull and totally unbelievable.

WhetherOrNot · 09/08/2015 23:12

I watched (!!) the first episode.........and got 10 minutes into the 2nd before giving up. Dire, just dire!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 09/08/2015 23:20

I was looking forward to it, I loved the books. I got ten minutes into the first episode before turning off in disgust Sad.

Tommy was in Intelligence, FFS, when did he become thick? Why bees? Why rip up the plot? And George, WTF? I didnt even get as far as Albert.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2015 23:42

They do seem to avoid disaster through luck or somebody handily appearing to help them don't they?

CrystalMcPistol · 09/08/2015 23:55

I quite enjoyed it for fluffy Sunday night viewing.

Rhubarb01 · 10/08/2015 00:10

I was suspicious about this serious particularly as the BBC scheduled it for the summer holidays - which is usually the dead period for drama as everything new is held back for the autumn. I wondered if it was going to be any good. It looks good visually but I can't say that I like the pairing of David Walliams and Jessica Raine. Like others I remember the 1980's pair and the 20's/30's setting and preferred it. I've only read one Tommy and Tuppence story which is N or M and I know the next three episodes are based on that but having seen the preview I can tell it's going to be virtually unrecognisable. I wish they had stuck more faithfully to the original setting and story the way Poirot always has. (Mind you it does work in some cases - the modern Sherlock being a good example) Ditto as well to the comments about ITV mangling Miss Marple stories - they even put Tommy and Tuppence in one of those!

fishboneschokus · 10/08/2015 07:19

Empress, yes, yes. And I'm sure you could go on and on. Jane Finn was so beautiful that Tommy was mesmerised. Tuppence wasn't beautiful, but stylish. And it turns out that Julius is married. How unchristiely sordid.

OP posts:
EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 10/08/2015 07:59

Julius is what????

And I bet he wasn't packing a gun called Little Willie...

fishboneschokus · 10/08/2015 10:47

Empress, you did well.
I am tempted to spoil the rest and state which it was, N or M, just to spare everyone the pain of watching.

But they'll probably change that, too.

I would love to know what AC would have thought?

Julius wasn't her uncle at all; he lied about that because he was married.

I understand that you don't want to watch it but please do. I need to hear your howls if you have read the book.

:)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/08/2015 10:48

I might have missed this, but did they ever explain what those leaves were?

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 10/08/2015 11:10

Fishbones, that would be really bad for my blood pressure.

Look at Poirot with David Suchet. Miss Marple with Joan Hickson. Gold standards. And then they produce this crap...

GreenbackBoogie · 10/08/2015 11:22

polkadots I don't think they did. Or if they did it wasn't memorable.

fishboneschokus · 10/08/2015 11:56

What leaves?

Empress, you have, as I expected, let me down. But I understand that you are protecting your own memories of the book.
:)

The whole thing about Tommy was that he wasn't stupid. Williams is bovine.

The last Tommy and Tuppence was the best. The one with the sweet old lady drinking milk. At least they've left that one alone.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/08/2015 13:09

The ones she pinched from the fireplace at Rita's - they thought that they might be the poison.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/08/2015 13:10

I mean, obviously he came up with a new plan, but I'd have still liked to have heard what they were!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 10/08/2015 13:13

Fishbones Grin

I couldn't. Even for MN, I just couldn't. I'm sorry.

ifigoup · 11/08/2015 07:52

Just watching the last episode on catch up (against my better judgement), and it's just SO bad.

Things Tuppence would never, ever have said:

  1. Okay
  2. Train station

Just had to get that off my chest...

AnOddOod · 11/08/2015 08:00

It was easy viewing tosh if you ignored the AC T&T and didn't think about the plot. DW I can never take seriously though which weakens anything he is in as I'm waiting for Little Britain.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/08/2015 00:17

I actually really enjoyed tonight's (probably because I don't remember the proper story at all!). Although Albert seems to have aged ten years in the last week Confused

Hepzibar · 17/08/2015 06:50

Tried again but just can't get into it. I can't put my finger on it but there is something not right.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 17/08/2015 07:06

I tried last night to give this series one more chance but I won't be watching it again. There's just something not right about it. Tuppence and Tommy have absolutely no chemistry, Wallians and Raine are just about okay separately but horrendous together. In fact if I'm honest Jeasica Raine drives me mad, her acting is not good at all. It's unbelievable in everyway and I think it takes itself too seriously.

Annarose2014 · 17/08/2015 15:35

Walliams is bovine

Grin

I hooted when Carter told him to stop the bomb or whatever with a straight face. Tommy was standing there looking so gormless I thought he was going to start drooling.

That said, Walliams is ok when he has to act worried or scared. Tommy is so out of his depth that I can buy that. I can't buy him as a bloody spy!

Tuppence comes across as being a bit reckless. I mean, she's shot at and there she is desperate to plunge into the fray again. No concern for their kid. Mind you, they don't seem to be actually raising that child at all, so he might not even notice her absence!

Oh and god the TWIN BEDS!!!! WTF?? Shock

Its like the production team got together and said "How can we make this married couple as sexless as possible?"

scarlets · 17/08/2015 16:20

I couldn't detect any chemistry between Raine and Walliams. That's what spoiled it for me. Walliams gave the impression of being in a Little Britain sketch about Cold War derring-do, only without Matt Lucas as Tuppence.

Loved the acting of the supporting cast. Great production values.

SeaRabbit · 23/08/2015 07:47

Just caught this thread. Great production values I agree - the flares in the peasouper were a revelation. It's painting the 1950s as hipsters see it rather than it actually was according to my mother - cold and pretty miserable. But nice clothes. David Walliams is so wooden and sexless. I read it was his idea to bring them up to date, hence him starring - but it is inexplicable why they didn't just pay him for the idea and get an actor in. I think Jessica Raine is a good actress and doing her best. 'Train station' annoyed me too. Bunkum, but I am still watching.
