NadiaWadia · 18/06/2015 23:41

Just seen episode 5. What the hell? Don't read any more if you've not seen episode 5!

Wha-at? Humans could not evolve into a new species in 2,000 years. That's just the blink of an eye in evolutionary terms. In the real world I think it has been about 100,000 years since Homo Sapiens evolved, and about 20,000-30,000 years since Neanderthals, our closest relative, became extinct. That's the kind of time frames they should be talking about.

And this scientist, played by Toby Jones, somehow knew this was all going to happen in our time. And suddenly invented time travel so they could go forward and set up Wayward Pines, and keep travelling backwards and forwards to collect new residents (obviously they can do this, because we saw the original sheriff appearing in our time and meeting Theresa and Ben on the road.) Right, OK. How do they support the infrastructure of the place, all the materials they will require, etc?

And they tell the teenagers all about this because they think they'll cope with it, but the adults are too mentally fragile to be told? And these fragile adults will be mentally healthier believing they are somehow trapped in an Orwellian disguised prison camp which they may expand a lot of energy trying to escape from? And if they do make an escape bid they'll be publicly executed while the other residents cheer. Yes that'll work, what a healthy society.

The whole premise is daft. Producers/writers would have done better to keep the whole mystery of Wayward Pines as a mystery for much longer. Just like in Lost when I am sure at least a season or two had gone by before we found out who the others were. It's a pity really, as I was finding it quite gripping.

shitebag · 18/06/2015 23:53

I'm glad others are watching as I don't know anyone IRL and was starting to wonder if it was just me :o

I'm another who thought that the plot has been ruined by the evolution revelation! I wanted it to be some sinister government cover up rather than a big sci-fi thing.

To make matters worse I'm reading the books alongside the show and there are a few differences from that which would've been better in the show and I keep confusing myself with that.

NadiaWadia · 19/06/2015 00:12

Yes, it started off like a cross between 'The Prisoner' and 'Lost' and that was how I thought it would pan out.

This whole future concept is too mind-boggling. I mean, I love Sci-Fi, but I do like it to have its own internal logic really.

Are the books any good? Would you say they're better or worse than the TV show?

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 23/06/2015 23:41

Just seen episode 5. I'm a bit Confused
Hopefully things will become clearer.
I've also downloaded the books to see if that helps. or not as I've just seen above!

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/06/2015 14:30

Never read a book and watch the same film / series

They always change things like the dome

So we have 'Abbie's' creatures in the future which kill everyone in their sights

And set in the future - no wonder have hi tec cameras : recording devises

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 24/06/2015 16:11

I was picking holes with the dexter books as they were so different to the series.
Dh and I were chatting in bed about wayward pines after we finished watching it. My brain is Hurting still this morning.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/06/2015 16:30

Oh yes sexter Dexter

That really pissed me off when the totally changed the death of one of the policeman

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/07/2015 20:36

Anyone still watching?

I'm finding it hard to believe it's years in the future

MarkingMyPlace9 · 03/07/2015 21:12

Just watched last Night's. I am too, but I'm also hooked! Me and DH love it

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 04/07/2015 16:46

All caught Up. The sex ed was a bit odd, I assume they're generically matching up the youngsters?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2015 22:26

Must be

For the new generation

CoffeeAndOranges · 16/07/2015 17:09

Marking my place here. This programme is just getting weirder all the time. I think the problem with the time travel thing (the doctor going back in time to collect more people/ talk to the agents) is solved if you think of those scenes as flashbacks - they collected everyone and froze them (hence toby jones saying it was 'too late' - presumably Dillon was already frozen by then), before freezing himself) have been gradually thawing people which is why they have such different ideas as to how long they've been there.

The 'abbies' storyline is utterly daft though - like a pp said, how evolution managed that in 2000 years is a bit far-fetched (well obviously the whole thing is far fetched!!).

Kind of carrying on watching it just to see how it pans out now, rather than being actually gripped by it.

Rollergirl1 · 16/07/2015 21:34

I'm watching it just coz there isn't really anything else on but finding it all completely ridiculous. So now they've brainwashed the kids and they're gonna run riot!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/07/2015 14:17

I didn't get the going back to 'find' People and freezing them

So was his wife frozen and defrosted

CoffeeAndOranges · 17/07/2015 18:44

Blondes, I have no idea what the plot writers intended, but the way DH & I are interpreting it is that Toby Jones (can't remember his character name) gathered people in stages (using the crazy teacher woman and the Sheriff among other peoples), freezing them as he went along (hence why Ethan went missing and then his wife went after him). Such a tactic would be more manageable than trying to get everyone at once, and would be less noticeable.

Once they had got enough people, Jones & his sister-nurse then froze themselves (presumeably setting some kind of timer!) and, when they defrosted, began to defrost people in stages. The first lot he told what was outside the gates, they couldn't handle it and they destroyed the town, so he had to start again and defrost another lot. So when they 'reckon' someone, they just defrost a new person to fill their place (there was a bit where he showed Ethan all the people who were still in storage).

Not sure it makes total sense but it's the best explanation we can come up with!

PrincessFiorimonde · 17/07/2015 22:34

Am late to this thread, but enjoying the series, even though it's got so many holes in it. E.g. (lots of these points other posters have pointed out; I'm just summarising some of them):

If it's 2000 years in the future, how come Toby Jones' character (Dr Jenkins/Pilcher) spoke to Ethan's FBI comrade after Ethan turned up in Wayward Pines? And Theresa and Ben found a service station/shop where people knew there'd been a traffic accident (the one that Ethan was in)? And the original sheriff came across Theresa and Ben and lured them in? Or does all this suggest a government experiment re: conformity rather than a freeze-them-for-2000-years-to-save-humankind scenario?

I can see how the Abis work if it's a futuristic thing - if, for example, they're supposed to be the result of a nuclear accident leading to mutation, rather than a consequence of evolution.

But, then, why not tell everyone in WP exactly what's going on, rather than leaving some people to try to breach the fence and mess everything up (to put it mildly)?

And where does all the fresh food come from?

However, if it's a govt. experiment re: conformity, where have the Abis come from? Confused

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 18/07/2015 14:06

Ooh last one next week. Not sure how it'll end. I have downloaded the books to read but don't want to ruin it for myself by reading them before the tv show had ended.

Geoff0409 · 22/07/2015 10:48

Seems to me all the things that happened - Jenkins talking to the FBI bloke, Theresa & Ben's accident etc all happened in 2014 where Ethan had just been "Frozen". Then Jenkins in 4028 is "Defrosting" when he sees necessary. I have to be honest I have loved it. I have never read the books and after a few episodes when they start to show it's in the future I kind of thought "oh here we go, I'm not going to like this", but then it has had some great plot twists. I will miss it when it finishes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/07/2015 16:45

that makes sense oranges tho how come some thought it was 2011 and think another lost 10yrs

and yes why not tell everyone that the whole world was overtaken by yetis Grin

the kids seem to grasp it better then adults, tho cant beleive the grey hubby got shot :( plus all the others
