I thought this was brilliant. I'd never heard of Lisa Lynch before this. I thought the actors involved played it beautifully.

I lost my mum and my lovely mum in law exactly like this. It brought back lots of memories. The trying on of wigs. The overwhelming fear.

I wish I'd known of her sooner. I'm going to buy her book.

I cried all the way through it too. Sheridan Smith is an incredible actress. So sad

I've just finished watching this, my dad has cancer and is currently going through treatment and I had to find the courage to watch it. It was beautifully made, beautiful performances especially by Michael Maloney as her dad I thought. A real credit to all involved.

ShebaQueen · 04/05/2015 00:43

It was so beautifully cast and played. Sheridan Smith is a genius actress but the others were excellent too.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 04/05/2015 00:50

She doesn't put a foot wrong does she? She's one of those actresses who when you see her name in something you think yep, this will be good.

Sheridan Smith can do absolutely No wrong.
Fantastic.
Not overly emotional

I have just dipped into Lisa's blog which is funny and emotional. RIP Lisa.x

Mrsjayy · 04/05/2015 08:33

She is a fabulous actress isnt she , i meant to say last nighf paul nicols and the rest of thecast were so good.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2015 10:52

What I thought it conveyed really well was how it affects the people around the person with cancer. Only one person was shown asking how Pete was and how he was coping and that was a slightly awkward exchange with a work colleague. He was there, on the periphery, being strong in public.

I watched it, unintentionally, as I knew it was going to be a strong sad story. But so glad I did. The acting performances were just brilliant. Sheridan Smith was (I believe) a close friend of Lisa Lynch, therefore, clearly very close to her heart.

The big 'C' touches many of us, in our lives, one way or another, whether via family, friends, or more personally. It was very powerful, and beautifully written, and many tears were shed here

I wasn't so keen on the scene with the wigs though. There's no way you'd be sent to see a little man with a voucher and be expected to pick some random old birds nest wig. When my mum had to have one, and I'm going back to the 90's, she had an appointment with a lovely lady who had a whole catalogue you could pick from. She was made a cup of tea and picked out a style that she and the wig lady thought would suit her, in the right shade and cut. I can't remember if it was proper hair or not but it was worth a couple of hundred pounds and she was given it completely free. She went back for a fitting and was given washing instructions etc. They couldn't have been more helpful. Perhaps it depends on the health authority.

Sheridan Smith was excellent.

As someone who has just completed chemo and radiotherapy I watched it all with tears in my eyes.

The bit that struck me was when her husband mentioned Lisa washing (or not washing) her hair - I did exactly the same, tried not to touch or dislodge my hair then when I finally did because it was a matted mess it just all came away Sad.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/05/2015 15:09

Ohh! Gemma - I thought that was one of the most distressing scenes. And totally understood it. Hope you're recovering now Flowers

I am, thank you.

FabulousFudge · 04/05/2015 15:24

That was the bit that I cried the most at too. I am hoping my hair will grow long enough soon to enable me to donate it.

The wig fitting was very true to my experience, although I didn't run out with the giggles. My breast cancer diagnosis was in 2008, the same year, I believe, as Lisa's. The NHS free (with voucher) wigs were all acrylic and horrible. I ended up sourcing mine from America and got a couple of fantastic ones for less than they cost in the UK, including import tax.

Sunnymeg · 04/05/2015 17:43

Gemma Thanks Thanks Thanks

I've just watched this. I knew nothing of Lisa Lynch before but will look at her blog now.
Another fine performance by Sheridan Smith - one of Britain's best actresses. Paul Nicholls very good too.

DP, being his usual cynical self, was half watching from behind the iPad. He remarked 'well she's probably made a packet off the book, and now this programme so good on her'. To which I said, 'No, she's dead'. And then his silence and tears set me off.

Flowers to anyone who is going through or has gone through cancer treatment and for whom the programme may have been a difficult watch.

Bostinwench · 04/05/2015 23:54

The help and support I had from the Nhs was wonderful....apart from the wig woman - she turned up on the ward with a battered suitcase and just pulled a few out - trying to convince me to try blonde- I am ginger- she just seemed to have lots of blonde ones- awful experience- I ended up buying my own - really expensive- but in the end just wore scarves - I really think it does differ from area to area x

Davros · 05/05/2015 07:55

I have had cancer and just couldn't watch this but reading this thread as a substitute. Isn't there a famous hairdresser, Trevor Sorbie I think, who runs a free post cancer wig service as a charity?

GemmaTeller · 05/05/2015 08:15

When I got my wig voucher I was given a list of places I could use it at.

I looked the two nearest up on the internet and didn't like the look of them. Looked the third one up, which was about half an hours drive away, and decided to go there.
Its run as part of a hairdressing salon by a woman who has been through chemo.
I can't recommend it enough to anyone, its private and discreet, light and bright and they have lots of patience and lots of wigs to choose from. The wig she suggested was not one I would have initially chosen but the style and colouring really suited me and the icing on the cake came when I was in a queue in a shop and the woman behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said ' have you just had your hair done, cos its lovely, that is'.

(the salon is in Standish in Wigan, if anyone wants the details please pm me)

GemmaTeller · 05/05/2015 08:17

...anyhoo, back to Sheridan Smith, I also really liked her on Find My Past, and she's quite a good singer as well.
