Watching it all in iplayer and I think it's great. It looks like he's moved away from mis-heard lyrics and 'spare chair'/'big light'
He did ask Kayleigh if she was on glue... Do you think he's a MNetter??

His facial expressions crack me up. You dirty Shock

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 03/05/2015 16:45

YY ladymoods, I've seen Dave Spikey's stand up a few time and much prefer it to PK.

ClareAbshire · 03/05/2015 16:53

Another one who liked it. It wasn't ground breaking and it was gentle but it made us laugh.

Ladymoods · 03/05/2015 17:22

"Do you remember Rola Cola?" isn't observational comedy, it's asking if you remember Rola Cola.

BackforGood · 03/05/2015 17:57

I've just watched the first 2 episodes and think it's great.
Subtle, not roll around on the floor type humour, but really great observational stuff.
I think she is excellent for the part Smile

jonicomelately · 03/05/2015 18:57

Actually Ladymoods asking an audience if they remember something like RollaCola, is observational comedy, according to it's definition.

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 19:02

Well its relatable (spelling) comedy remembering rola cola isnt it

jonicomelately · 03/05/2015 19:23

I'm not sure I understand your post Mrsjayy but the rolacola thing is observational comedy because it's something universally familiar but not consciously noted by the audience. Anything that's along the lines of 'do you remember' or 'have you noticed' is likely to be observational comedy rather than surreal comedy as practised by Vic and Bob et al.

InQuiteAPickle · 03/05/2015 20:11

The joke wasn't "does anybody remember Roller Cola?" It was "Why do mums always buy crap pop? Roller Cola, wtf was that!?" Or something along those lines. So it was observational - he was observing that mums always buy crap pop.

I think Peter Kay is a great observational comedian. "Why do old people never clip their seat belts in?" So funny!

Comedy is subjective though isn't it? Peter Kay can do no wrong, in my eyes. I love Dave Spikey too. I am Northern but I like Mickey Flannagan as well. Smile

Whathaveilost · 03/05/2015 20:17

"Do you remember Rola Cola?" isn't observational comedy, it's asking if you remember Rola Cola.

That sort of sentence is used to set the gag up. It's not a stand alone joke. It gets the audience remembeing something and then the joke starts from there and expands as he will then add other things that the audience may remember from there childhood and then make comparisons to how things were when he was a kid. Then there is the realisation that actually things were like that for them too and they laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

Well I like it!

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 20:40

I was just about to that it isnt about rola cola its about your mum buying crap cola and not coke

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 20:44

Its like the lunch ladies having you all running in cos its spitting or having an uncle knobhead Grin at a wedding a lot of people have an uncle knobhead or in my case my stepdad

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 20:45

Coca cola my mum wouldny buy coke

wowfudge · 03/05/2015 20:48

Well we laughed - some of it was really funny. I spent a lot time watching where they were driving as it was an area I know well. They must have filmed it over and over and done lots of editing!

InQuiteAPickle · 03/05/2015 21:02

WowFudge, we're from not so far away from the area and DH was doing my head in saying, "ooh, I've been working there today/that's where such and such/blah blah blah last week." Just watch the bloody thing, DH! Grin

InQuiteAPickle · 03/05/2015 21:04

And they drive a bloody long way to work don't they?! Smile

Whathaveilost · 03/05/2015 21:24

Where was it filmedwow.
I'm guessing round Bolton.

InQuiteAPickle · 03/05/2015 22:16

It looks like it was filmed in Bolton, Salford and Manchester.

mswibble · 03/05/2015 23:10

pickle I was just like your DH, spent the two episodes pointing out places locally (live in Bolton) and from my commute (work in Salford)! I was annoying my OH pointing out that one second they were at Manchester Fort, next shot was Swinton! We really enjoyed it anyway.

sherbetlemonD · 03/05/2015 23:25

I laughed at the start of the first episode and then thought it was a bit bleh. The second did have me in stitches in parts though- didn't realise it was on iPlayer though so might have to have a watch before bed :)

cruikshank · 03/05/2015 23:39

I thought it was really good and the kind of gentle heart-warming comedy that I like.

For some reason, the advert where he said 'This is just soft porn' completely cracked me up though - I mean, I was proper proper laughing and I'm still smiling now just typing about it.

Forever FM is definitely the third star of the show.

Agree with a PP about the Alanis bit - Kayleigh's face was spot-on during that. I can't be the only one who has done similar - ok, not actually in front of anyone, but that song was a massive hit so there must be a lot of us Of A Certain Age with memories ...

wowfudge · 04/05/2015 11:42

Most of the first episode was a tour of Swinton, Pendlebury, Salford around the Height and Langworthy Road and yes Fort Manchester, which was where the supermarket is. But it was very heavily edited together.

clangermum · 04/05/2015 15:25

First episode, the mention of Martika's Kitchen. The type of band you'd completely forgotten

Davros · 04/05/2015 17:05

I can't undrstand the fuss. It was quite good, no more than that imo but certainly isn't Rev

Jacana · 06/05/2015 10:45

Watched the first two on I player last night. The first showed promise, by the end of the second I was hookedGrin
