1/6-Ice Worlds

Yes, it's back. Prepare to have your lower jaws unhinged once again as the series that delivers scenes of breathtaking beauty and/or heart-stopping drama roughly every 30 seconds returns for a second run. It was the polar bear cubs who stole the show last time round and their stumbling first steps get a reprise here, as David Attenborough whispers us through the wonders of the Arctic and Antarctic. But they're competing with other cute youngsters for the "aaah" vote: arctic fox cubs, fluffy sandhill crane chicks and, best of all, a little musk ox calf skittering on the snow. As ever, it's not all sweetness and (dazzling) light, though. The epic ordeal of male emperor penguins will make any human dads watching feel like lightweights. And the tale of one polar bear struggling for survival as climate change melts his world is shattering. If it persuades any of us to turn off our TV sets at the mains tonight, so much the better.

hub2dee · 05/11/2006 21:20

This is amazing.

The male emperor penguins look after the eggs ! Awwwwwwwwww.

The women have to schlep a few hundred miles to get food from Asda.

(Do they think we're stupid ? Why not stand around with your mates having a chat whilst the women go shopping ? )

RTKangaMummy · 05/11/2006 21:25

dh was wetting himself at the penguins

hub2dee · 05/11/2006 21:31

They are so cute. One of those hairy cow babies is gonna get it though, aren't they.

So cold.

And that Skewer bird taking out a petrel ?

hub2dee · 05/11/2006 21:33

The polar bear struggling to get out of the thinning ice was also quite poignant.

JoolsToo · 05/11/2006 21:33

I thought it was Skua?

JoolsToo · 05/11/2006 21:33

viscious buggers whatever!

hub2dee · 05/11/2006 21:38

(Had never heard of it before so deffo don't know how to spell it LOL).

Crikey - do we want the polar bear to live or the poor walrus ?

treacletart · 05/11/2006 21:42

I'm listening rather than typing. DH is visibly upset about the polar bear. I tried to warn him Don't ever get attached to the cute things in these programs, only half of them ever survive. Learnt my lesson with the baby hippo a few years back.

RTKangaMummy · 05/11/2006 21:44

When we were in Aussie we saw the adult penguins come in from the ocean to feed the babies and they make soooooooooooo much noise

And the babies were sooooo cute

I've sky plussed it, watching paul weller at the mo

treacletart · 05/11/2006 21:48

Do you think Cbeebies "Our Planet" will be getting any of this footage soon?

GoingQuietlyMad · 05/11/2006 21:51

The polar bear was heartbreaking. The way it just lay down injured.

But the penguin chicks freezing to death was also v sad

having children has made me so sentimental.

hub2dee · 06/11/2006 09:38

I thought it was quite interesting that the walruses didn't show more aggression towards the polar bear tbh. There was the odd one who had a go, and obvously they all contributed to the 'wall of blubber', but I'd have thought a few of them giving the bear a growl / snap / stab / shove would have been quite effective.

The shots of the two humpback whale-tails disappearing was amazing. Obviously took them MONTHS to get just those few seconds. Also the krill-coralling was unreal. Beautiful shapes.

The 'skiing' polar bears - mum plus cubs coming down the steep slope - was also gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the 'extra' bit at the end about the film-makers in their hut and out on the ice. Wat incredibly hard conditions to work in. I would have crapped myself at that fella's nose in the window.

Quadrophenia · 06/11/2006 09:45

I couldn't believe just how big the Walruses are, they were huge! Found the penguin bit impressive but kind of depressing, I kept thinking, please don't come back as a male penguin, I could not be gracious about being at the edge of the huddle

hub2dee · 06/11/2006 09:53

LOL. I loved the speeded-up footage which showed the huddle slowly kind of moving around, separating / coming together depending on the cold blasts etc. Amazing.

Quadrophenia · 06/11/2006 12:34

It certainly was amazing footag, i love this programme so much.

RTKangaMummy · 06/11/2006 13:02

The shots of the polar bear swimming were truly amazing. Have Sky+ this to watch with dts.

Particularly like the diaries at the end, I would have saved the baby chick too! But I would have also saved all those chicks who froze so wouldn't be much good as a natural history film-maker.

The polar bear peeking in the cabin window looked so cute! Obviously a very scary experience but still, sweet big bear! This was much more appealing than the Big Bear Diaries which was more about the presenters.

If these kind of programmes don't make children interested in the world around them then nothing will!

hub2dee · 07/11/2006 08:12

I'm not sure which series it relates to (or indeed if it's maybe just an urban myth) but dw tells me two bear researchers / film-makers were eaten quite recently by the bears they were filming / studying.
