Beckham now does look undernourished - there was a recent picture of her with a cutout of her from the Spice Girls days when she was slim but not skeletal. So yes, shouts of 'eat something' are often heard.

can't speak re Tweedy as I always run away from her appearances, criminal record in all senses.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 22/04/2015 14:35

Was just trying to point out to Archery that people do comment on super skinny people, VB does not look healthy with her bones sticking out and the media etc are very keen to point this out.

On the flip side P!nk looses her super toned body from touring and she gets labelled fat, I would love to be that kind of fat!

DidgeDoolittle · 22/04/2015 19:21

I am a size 18 and 5ft 8.
I think people are right to be concerned about the health of people who are very overweight. However, that does not give them the right to judge them or to try to shame them into losing weight.

To just assume that all fat people have chosen to exercise no control over their eating, and sit on the sofa all day, makes me want to cry. I was a size 14 two years ago. I now have a chronic illness and I take loads of medication on a daily basis, for life. All my meds have side effects of weight gain. The nature of my condition means I cannot walk very far or do any strenuous exercise. Just to add to my woes I have to wear horrid flat shoes

Imagine how I feel when I go out, knowing there are people out there who judge fat people. Not just on what they look like, but also on their presumed greed and lack of control. These people have no idea what is going on in people's lives that makes them as they are. I have a hard enough time in my life without the thought that people find me unacceptable.

I would love to live in a more tolerant, forgiving society where people accepted each other for who they are, not what they look like.

HelenaDove · 22/04/2015 19:33

I posted this on the Jamelia thread but its also relevant here.

Im a size UK 14/16 now I was a size UK 28. I feel good about myself now but the poster who said you need the confidence and self esteem to happen first is bang on. When i first started down the road of losing weight i treated it like i was a scientist doing an experiment. "I wonder how much i would lose if i follow this plan (Slimming World) (turned out to be a loss of ten stone) and i filled my life with other things and tried to find joy elsewhere.

HOWEVER to do this you have to be

a. mentally and emotionally ready to tackle it.
b. prepared for the fact that you will still be body shamed even AFTER you have lost the weight because there will always be people who are never satisfied and willing to project their own issues onto you.
A good example of this was my ex boss who told me recently that yes i CAN excsersise off loose skin hmm despite two doctors telling me it would have to be surgically removed.

I have a size 6/8 friend who is in her late thirties and is currently in hospital having had a heart attack = smoking

Husband had a heart attack 9 years ago = smoking.

Which brings me to
c We are worth so much more than how we look Enjoy life because its short

HelenaDove · 22/04/2015 19:34

Bunny What you REALLY mean is thats its ok to bully overweight people in a way that it isnt ok to bully drinkers or smokers.

FujimotosElixir · 23/04/2015 07:15

i think bunnys post is in slightly bad taste as someone has killed themselves accidentally after taking diet pills, your attitude is irresponsible.

specialsubject · 23/04/2015 18:12

point c) absolutely, in spades, cheers and applause.

we also need to be more selective about what we read/view, and also be prepared not to tolerate stupid comments. E.g about exercising off loose skin; how could anyone be that ignorant? Did they listen at school at ALL?

BTW I've never been a size 10 and am not bothered about looking 'smoking hot' whatever that means. But I do take action if I start edging towards too fat, because that is called 'looking after yourself'.

however I have no mental or physical health issues, both of which can cause weight gain. If I put on weight it is the simple 'eaten more than I've been burning off'.

although there are people on here who will swear blind that for those in normal health, that is nonsense. No wonder it is possible for the despicable diet industry to keep making money.

Eloise Parry bought poison online, having been conned into believing it would help her to lose weight. Horrific tragedy.

Tanaqui · 23/04/2015 20:27

I just watched it- I do like Georgina Horne, and wish the agency had picked her!

HelenaDove · 24/04/2015 01:37

specialsubject i saw Eloises mum being interviewed on tv It was heartbreaking Sad

HelenaDove · 24/04/2015 01:47

re. the loose skin comment Ive learnt to ignore comments like that now....hence point B.
Thanks

HelenaDove · 24/04/2015 01:50

Tana go onto twitter and search for Marina Rinaldi = plus size Italian designer fashion brand. Gorgeous clothes which i sadly cant afford.

HelenaDove · 24/04/2015 01:55

Just putting that post here because ive noticed the Marina Rinaldi campaigns in magazines and think the way they do the fashion shoots is gorgeous.

AgaPanthers · 24/04/2015 02:27

Tess Munster is hippocritical in the extreme.

She is morbidly obese (she weighs 100% more than a healthy weight) and makes heavy use of Photoshop, weird camera angles, lighting, heavy makeup and she's even tattooed her arm fat to make her arms look smaller.

Arm tattoos:

2aipldba0.igsonar.com/hphotos-ak-xaf1/t51.2885-15/11032995_647018435399787_147949575_n.jpg

Actual arms:

She is basically telling people to eat themselves to death. Eating too much food now kills more people globally than not eating enough. In America obesity is a bigger cause of death than smoking. Nobody gets adulation for posting pictures of themselves smoking.

AgaPanthers · 24/04/2015 02:28

And just to say in spite of all that she goes on about 'eff your beauty standards'.

carabos · 24/04/2015 07:27

I watched the programme and was very surprised when Georgia said she is a size 14. She looked much bigger than that to me, albeit shapely.

I was interested in the particular fashion trends among the large women and girls. The hair, the odd accessories, the tattoos. There's something going there which is more than just fashion for fatties - I'm not making a judgement about that, what I'm saying is that it clearly usn't just about size, it's a "look".

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/04/2015 09:54

Aga do you know she had her arms tattooed to make them look smaller? Maybe she just likes tattoos, the same way many people do

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/04/2015 09:57

Just to add Aga, no matter what your size your arms look bigger when they are against your body as opposed to having your hands on your hips!

There weight is clearly not healthy for them, as this thread was originally saying - but it's all got a bit silly now tbh

goodasitgets · 24/04/2015 10:38

There's a long back story with Tess and her size/other issues
I can't support her owing to the shitty customer service of her website. They kept my money for 5 months and sent no goods, plus I am not the only one, there are loads of us

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 24/04/2015 11:04

Goods I hope you got your money back in the end.

The thing is people do look at her and think if she's that big then I guess it's ok. I have a friend who idolises her, friend is also a very big girl, and I do worry for her health.

goodasitgets · 24/04/2015 11:06

Eventually. The other people I have spoken to haven't been as lucky Angry and are still without goods or money

FujimotosElixir · 24/04/2015 12:13

carabos the tattoo /pin up style seems in... oh dear i hope the website issues get sorted.

jeanswitholes · 24/04/2015 13:39

carabos the tattoo /pin up style seems in... oh dear i hope the website issues get sorted.

What happens to a tattoo if a lot of weight is lost?

If they are heavily tattooed they may have to stay that size for ever otherwise there skin will look a mess if weight is lost
which is sad

primarynoodle · 24/04/2015 15:26

off topic (or actually on topic depending how you look at things) im not sure what i think about the plus size clothing industry.

Afaik clothes are modelled on a size 8 and then more/less material is added based on other sizes - this is one of the reasons being so far away from a size 8 when youre fatter means clothes dont look good. This is the point of plus sized clothing lines - to make clothes to 'suit' bigger bodies.

i dont think its morally right to deny people the chance to wear clothes that fit and look good in them, regardless of size, because it does horrible horrible things to mental health and self esteem.

but then is this normailising obesity? i think it is... i also think there would be uproar if a shop opened that deliberately catered for only underweight people, although i may be wrong...

carabos · 24/04/2015 16:22

I think primarynoodle that the Evans PR guy was explaining that it's more complicated than simply adding more fabric - it's a whole different fit.

I don't think these shops are normalising obesity, that ship has sailed IMO. There is clearly a growing market for "plus size" clothing and it makes sense for companies to enter it. At the end of the day, no matter where these women are psychologically with their weight, they can't walk around naked any more than anyone else can, so why shouldn't they have nice clothes that fit properly?

Thecowandcat · 24/04/2015 17:33

I just watched the programme on catch-up.

I'm not convinced the modelling agency was real. They were so shockingly clueless it has to be a parody! Thought they'd slipped in some footage from a spin off of W1A!

I also agree with other posters who say that plus-size clothing does nothing to encourage people to be fat or to deter them from loosing weight. I'm fat because I have an emotional eating problem. I'm not particularly interested in fashion or clothes and never really have been. I don't find the clothing issue motivating or demotivating when it comes to my weight.

I'm glad there are plus size bloggers out there because I think it is nice to see different body shapes represented instead of just the skeletal photoshopped ones you see in the media.

I have nothing against thin women whether they are thin naturally or through a lot of hard work. I think, good for them!

The problem as I see it is that because of the fashion and magazine industry many women, both fat and thin, hate their bodies because they don't measure up to the models we see in photographs. The women we see in fashion magazines are often not as thin as they are photoshopped to be and achieve their low weight through poor diet and in some cases by utilising illegal substances.

I'm glad plus size bloggers exist because at least they are providing some counter balance to this toxic atmosphere.

I also think focusing on fat and size is damaging when you are over weight. Loosing weight is very difficult and I personally find focusing on a number on a scale or tape measure demotivating. It makes me want to give up and eat a family size bar of chocolate in front of the telly.

What is working for me at the moment is

  • Looking at the roots of my emotional eating and trying not to use food as a crutch for my emotional discomfort.
  • Focusing on being active, not at the gym but by doing things I enjoy, such as walking while listening to my ipod, gardening in the community etc. Until I got hobbled by the blister from hell the other day this was going really well Grin and I was walking several miles a day.
  • Getting back to my passion in the kitchen and cooking healthier meals and snacks, not with an emphasis on calories or weight loss but on nurturing my body.
  • Eventually doing some weights to try and build up muscle and strength.

If I never loose weight that is fine by me. I'd rather be a fat women who is well nourished and active then a fat women who sits on her bum and eats all day because I got demotivated by my size.
