So I'm watching Poldark and the musketeers etc and I've watched all the usual Austen's and Bronte's as well as things like Robin Hood and Merlin.
What might I have missed?
Any ideas welcome though I have watched a lot so can't think to list them all now.

The Tudors?

Groovester · 22/03/2015 09:38

Wolf hall?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 22/03/2015 10:44

Watched both. Though the Tudors was pretty shoddy
Thanks though

I'm not sure if you mean recent series or if you're talking box sets. If you're thinking of dvds, how about The Barchester Chronicles? Or The Pallisers, maybe. Both quite old but they repeated The Pallisers on BBC2 last year in the afternoons and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again.

Or one of the (many) Dickens adaptations. Bleak House and Little Dorrit were both enjoyable.

Northernlurker · 22/03/2015 15:01

House of Eliott - bloody LOVED that :)

The Devil's Whore

Northernlurker · 22/03/2015 15:02

ALso the BBC adapted Edith Wharton's The Buccaneers about 20 years ago. That was great.

Groovester · 22/03/2015 20:49

Yes, I second the Buccaneers.
That was brilliant. Must hunt it down to rewatch actually. Thanks for the reminder northernlurker!

LeBearPolar · 22/03/2015 20:51

The Forsyte Saga with Damian Lewis - absolutely brilliant.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/03/2015 10:27

Thank you. I've seen a few of these, Forsyte etc but there are others I haven't such as the buccaneers. Will get onto it. May keep me out of trouble for a bit

LadyGlen- either... both. I don't mind older stuff. I don't mind cheesy like merlin or tender like Forsyte. I've just caught up with outlander which is a bit of both tbh

Have you seen North and South?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/03/2015 10:53

Yes. More than once Grin I wonder why

Not a period drama as such but Mad Men, set in 1960s New York has a similar immersive quality, the costumes and sets are amazingly accurate and the storylines are very compelling.

treaclesoda · 23/03/2015 11:19

If you're up for watching something subtitled, the Spanish series Grand Hotel was quite entertaining. All a bit ludicrous, but beautiful costumes, and very atmospheric, and just generally entertaining.

funnyossity · 23/03/2015 11:27

I was going to say North and South!

ppeatfruit · 23/03/2015 13:54

A fabulous DVD called BrightStar, about Keats' life when he lived in Hampstead with his girlfriend who was his neighbour , I have never seen such a beautiful and emotionally intelligent film. Especially because it's fairly recent.

They're also repeating Upstairs Downstairs on gold on TV ?? i'm not sure which station sorry.

AesopsMables · 23/03/2015 16:34

My vote goes to 'The Duchess of Duke St' tis fab

Some wonderful person has uploaded ALL the series on You Tube and even though they were made in the mid 70's they are still really entertaining with good stories.

ppeatfruit · 23/03/2015 17:03

Yes I liked TDODS too. The Hardy books are all dramatised on telly or wherever, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of D'Urbervilles etc. they're depressing imo but good if you like that sort of thing.

LeBearPolar · 23/03/2015 18:50

Oh, I hated Bright Star!

How about North and South, the original one, set in the American Civil War and starring Patrick Swayze? Mind you, I haven't watched it since it originally aired in the 80s so no idea how it's aged Grin

And in a similar vein - Robin of Sherwood starring Michael Praed?

Grilledkippers · 23/03/2015 21:50

Did you watch 'The White Queen' 'twas fabulous?

Pancakeflipper · 23/03/2015 21:54

Cramford.

ppeatfruit · 24/03/2015 09:50

I loved Cranford. I love all of Elizabeth Gaskell's books!

Weirdly last night I came across a repeat of Lillie ,the life of Lillie Langtry, on ITV Encore which is brilliant with Francesca Annis, some of the acting is a bit stilted, the costumes are brill though and basically it is good.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 24/03/2015 12:18

Yay more ideas. I've nearly finished the Bucanneers (the later one) and have the house of eliot lined up next to go.
I loved bright star
Not seen the White queen or a few of the others so thank you

Well out of that lot I think I would have run off with Greg Wise too
And what was with the kissing. Robertarailwaychildren was practically inhaling him
Took a while to get into but was worth watching
