I've never shopped in waitrose what is special about it, is the food really superior?

Passthecake30 · 05/02/2015 23:15

Nice kitchen. ...but why a tiny under counter fridge in all that space?

Their food shop looked like mine pre kids and child care costs. Like pp, I don't understand the eat "well" title at all....it must just be in reference to the fact that the volume if food isn't changing thou the cost is?

avocadotoast · 05/02/2015 23:22

That woman cutting up carrots was priceless. Especially given that she was just shoving them in a bowl (raw!) to have with that pizza (which admittedly was a bit manky looking).

I found myself talking to the TV when the kids were saying they thought she should cut carrots more often.

Also, what do both of them do all day?! Where do they get all their money from? Totally baffled.

revealall · 06/02/2015 00:56

I thought it was very interesting actually.

Loved that the chicken tasted dreadful. All the " processed" chicken comments and it turned out to be the one they normally eat! .All because the packaging they were seeing was cheap instead of Waitrose.

It annoysme greatly when people say they will only eat certain baked beans/ Mayo / ketchup. I'd be keen to know if they'd tried more than one cheaper product to compare it to.

kansasmum · 06/02/2015 01:29

I'm still baffled by the fact they went to the supermarket 17 times in a week? That's nearly 3 times a day??!!! Who has time for that??! And WTAF are you doing that you need to go 17 times a week? I missed the beginning of this weeks program so maybe it was explained?
Have been disappointed by this program - it's just been about swapping brands for non brands. Could have been a much more interesting and informative program.

HoraceCope · 06/02/2015 10:08

the carrot chopping scene was hilarious, loved the children. shocking about sugar content in bolognaise.
thought the parents were lovely too and the program was no benefits bashing for a change, ior anything bashing really.

HoraceCope · 06/02/2015 10:10

i watched this oast week but missed the end.
i dont think its a bad programme and not everyone wants to know how to use a left over chicken 21 times

FreeButtonBee · 06/02/2015 10:24

I do think they missed a trick in not helping them learnt how to actually cook stuff rather than just use jars. How hard is it to knock up a marinade for chicken? That's obviously where she (and he) lacked skills and that would have made the most difference to their bills in the round. Too much like hard work for GW...

shakemysilliesout · 06/02/2015 10:34

What did they do all day??

I think they were bored and going to the shops to fill their day.

Best part, the dad wants to keep take away night but have supermarket take away style Korma for a week night thereby making his weekly food spend more expensive!!

I work pt so don't berate full timers for using Jars etc. but these were not full timers!!

Henbur1702 · 06/02/2015 10:43

Pass thecake I saw them open the door on one of the huge American fridges (it was round the corner in a separate area of kitchen) when they had the pizza - unless that was just a freezer for all the processed ready meals they purchase Hmm. I have no problem with a program aimed at saving money on food bills (whoever it's targeted at), but surely it's just a visual rip off of mysupermarket.com if it's 80% focussed on saving money on brand switching cardboard packaged ready meals and cutting down on pre-prepared carrots Confused

Thedonkeyontherainbowsaidwoof · 06/02/2015 11:39

I've only seen the first episode but I was very disappointed. I'm trying to cut back our food budget at the moment so I was hoping this would have some useful advice.

The family seemed to only buy expensive brands and a fair bit of processed stuff. If you don't do that there wasn't much useful information in this programme for you.

I thought some of the experiments were really stupid. Why did they try to replace the husbands beer with non-alcoholic beer? Why not just try to find him a nice cheaper beer?

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 06/02/2015 11:47

Maybe if they spend less time in the supermarket, they could spend more time in the kitchen doing some proper cooking? Just a thought.

SaucyMare · 06/02/2015 11:53

If you don't do that there wasn't much useful information in this programme for you.
maybe you should watch the programs called super scrimpers www.channel4.com/programmes/superscrimpers

there are already programs for you, and the jamie oliver series showing how to use leftovers.
I personally found it interesting, went and got my jar of dolmio and was shocked at the sugar content. I recognised many of the packets and jars in their shopping basket (as i buy them that regularily).
I am sorry one series wasn't aimed at you, but there are many people it was aimed at (like me) i know how to cook (unlike the lady last night) but just don't consider i have time, as i want to eat quickly. (and i know people claim they can make food in 2 seconds BUT I CAN'T)

Fatstacks · 06/02/2015 11:55

17 supermarket trips per week.

2 or 3 EACH DAY.

They need a bloody medal.

I have to have mine delivered people poncing about in supermarkets drives me crazy.

Not sure the point of this episode, maybe it was to show wealthier people how much money they waste?

They could clearly afford it, now they need money for works so need to cut back.

It would be much more interesting to show how someone on average income could ensure they are getting the best value and quality for their money.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 06/02/2015 11:58

I work 60 hours a week and we don't eat from jars, nor do we eat frozen pizza .

Fatstacks · 06/02/2015 12:03

Kebab place every night Sybil?Wink

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 06/02/2015 12:15

Ooooh - glad I found this thread!

I really want to know where their money comes from. He gave up work to do a "bit of contracting" and she didn't seem to work at all. Nor did they seem to have any clue how many times a week they went to the supermarket or what they spent. It obviously wasn't causing any financial difficulties so why exactly were they on the programme?

The house looked nice inside but the outside was rather odd - it seemed to abut a gigantic car park

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 06/02/2015 13:08

Grin Not at all. Pizza Hut Grin

House used to be a B&B, Gobbolin. They are renovating it, hence the 'need' for more cash.

Iwantacampervan · 06/02/2015 13:10

Last week's programme did make me examine what's in my store cupboards/freezer - I am consciously not stocking them up until we've eaten what's in there (within reason).

Owllady · 06/02/2015 13:11

I used to see Greg Wallace shopping in Morrison's. I imagine that's how he ate for less

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 06/02/2015 13:21

I think using a smaller store with less choice, and meal planning (and using the left overs for a different meal) is the key. Buy loose fruit and veg, whole chickens instead of portions. Avoid the BOGOF or the 2 for 1, they are only a bargain if you were going to buy that product anyway.

HoraceCope · 06/02/2015 13:22

same here Iwantacampervan I wrote down all the tins in my cupboard, that was a revelation!

HoraceCope · 06/02/2015 13:23

mumsnetters should make the programme,

ssd · 06/02/2015 15:29

horace, they did Grin

Interesting. I actually shop at waitrose but I only eat unprocessed food and the rest is usually waitrose basics, so I find this obsession with "brands" really weird...
