Watching now. I think it's pretty good

Thanks rollergirl...but why? I don't understand. It has much more impact if it was someone on a mission to teach her a lesson...but another bully bullying a bully...Feels like a twist too far?

Rollergirl1 · 16/01/2015 21:27

I don't agree. It highlighted the very essence of internet trolling. That there is no reason. They do it just because they can. Because they are bored. And that is why it was so powerful.

ZebraZeebra · 16/01/2015 21:37

Hmmm never thought about it like that. I think I was expecting a more clear cut resolution / reason? The reason being "just because they're twats" is more disturbing, I suppose. I think also i was labouring under this misguided idea that bullies don't bother with other bullies, only "victims".

cogitosum · 16/01/2015 23:10

I didn't think we found out who it was. I thought that was the point.

TheFirstOfHerName · 16/01/2015 23:13

The implication was that it was an internet troll, pretending to pursue justice but actually just messing with her for the lulz.

Clawdy · 17/01/2015 23:06

The Jennifer Li character didn't quite work for me - she looked too old for the role. Also I couldn't believe she would post clips of herself singing so badly - they could have shown her singing really well, and let's face it,someone would have posted a nasty comment! so the storyline would still have worked. Excellent powerful drama, though.

TheFirstOfHerName · 18/01/2015 09:06

Yes, Haruka Abe is 30, which definitely would have made her the oldest girl in the year above Casey at school.

Armpitt · 18/01/2015 09:09

i havent seen it - would you recomend schools showing it? what age?

hildasmuriel · 18/01/2015 09:25

I quite liked the Jennifer character (looking a bit old aside) as when you first saw her you did laugh as she looked like typical girl thinking her singing was great when it was awful. You could see how people would get sacked into nasty comments. No different to X Factor really! I also thought she carried off the vulnerability well.

I think this programme had lots to think about. What about every time we all pile in with comments about someone on X Factor? Is that bullying? Is there a vulnerable person sat at home?

AgaKhant · 18/01/2015 10:33

I watched this with my dd last evening. She's yr 7. I was in 2 minds having read the comments on here, but very pleased I did. If scare tactics are needed to show how important this issue is, then so be it. It was an intense thing for us to watch and just helped me reiterate to her that she must never try to face such things alone. By God, though, it's a scary world out there!!

TheFirstOfHerName · 18/01/2015 12:03

Armpitt: As a parent, I would be happy with it being shown in schools to Y10 and older.

TheFirstOfHerName · 18/01/2015 12:05

Although some Y7-Y9s would be ready for it, not all would, including DS2 (Y8, but his AS would make it difficult for him to understand it).

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 18/01/2015 22:15

I just watched it on 4OD. Oh my God, I was terrified! I'm now going to get my teens to watch it.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 18/01/2015 22:15

I'm also now slightly worried that you lot are all hackers getting into my computer and posting my entire history! Grin

hildasmuriel · 19/01/2015 08:33

More about Deirdre here. Not wholly reassuring. www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-01-18/coronation-street-not-aware-of-any-desire-that-anne-kirkbride-has-to-quit-the-soap

TheFirstOfHerName · 19/01/2015 08:40

?

hildasmuriel · 19/01/2015 10:07

Yes Deirdre Barlow was the cyberbully.

Or maybe I just posted on the wrong thread...

Idontseeanysontarans · 19/01/2015 10:16

DS watched about 5 minutes of it in 4OD then turned it off - he was a victim of cyber bullying last year from people at school (thankfully they dealt with it very quickly and severely) so it hit a bit too close to home for him. It just reinforced his belief that social media isn't for him.
I haven't watched it all yet. Would anyone let their 9 year old watch it or is it too much for that age?

Squtternutbaush · 19/01/2015 12:10

Shock Hilda :o actually just snorted with laughter

TheFirstOfHerName · 19/01/2015 14:06

Would anyone let their 9 year old watch it
No

or is it too much for that age?
Yes

abouttobeevicted · 19/01/2015 16:31

First I am seriously contemplating letting my just 9 year old watch it. I watched it over the weekend. I thought it was v good and realistic.

I work in IT and justdance unlike CSI etc the IT skills needed are actually not unrealistic. I work somewhere where keystrokes/ websites and white lists/recording video msgs and phone calls are common. Do i think it happens in someone's house no not really but it is possible with an IP address many things are possible.

I know many people inside and out side of work who could do this the fact that they wont shows that most people really wouldnt go to the time and cost to do this.

The thing I was annoyed about wasn't the story is that she kept only thinking that it would have to be the stereo typical 30+ bloke in him mums basement type person.

My DD has access to her own tablet and a couple of laptops. They are key stroke monitored and recorded she isnt allowed to chat all her emails come to me. I monitor her youtube if you wants to post she needs to ask me.
WHY because some "creepy bloke* on Club Penguin on her first day asked her where she lived and if she was pretty? I closed the account as after complaining to them eventhough your not supposed to be able to chat without becoming friends they admitted they had a bug in there firewall.

sorry long but it is v important and the earlier the better

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/01/2015 20:41

Watched with the DDs- they were totally hooked, right the way through. Both think it should be shown in schools "but parents might complain about the sweary bits." Such a valuable message for parents and young people.

oneowlgirl · 25/01/2015 22:56

Just watched it on 4OD - scary stuff. I'd love to show it to my 8 yr old, but the language & topics are just too mature for him. Definitely think all teenagers should watch it though.

Feel completely freaked out now & not sure what's the best thing to do re internet safety!

SandraWood · 26/01/2015 11:03

Nope, it's not appropriate for a young 8 year old. It's very sweary, very disturbing, and it deals with suicide, self-harm, and psychological torture.
