Child Genius (C4)

Anyone planning to watch this?

I was a little like these children; joined Mensa as a child, but used my ability to coast through school/university rather than to achieve anything noteworthy.

DS2 is also of this ilk. We are not doing any of the things these parents are doing, although when opportunities arise through school then obviously we let him participate.

My DM and I were talking about the questions last night, and some of them were just like the 11+ questions we were given in the early 60s.

marne2 · 28/07/2014 15:02

The number sequencing questions were easy, my dd got some of them, she got some of the other questions right but could not complete them as fast as the kids on the programme. No way could dd or I do the memorising cards though, would be lucky if I could remember 3 Grin.

Need to watch episode 2 on catch up later. There are a lot of weird parents out there!

Both my children have IQs in excess of 140 - cant remember exactly what they were tbh - if I had to guess i would say 148 and 152. They do okay in school - there are kids that are brighter/more motivated/better tutored than they are. I don't worry about it, they are loved and happy, know that they have to get a job when they grow up and have the skills to do that. i'd rather (and do) spend my time teaching them to iron their shirts and cook a meal than using flash cards. I also kick them out to go and play and meet friends.

Our philosophy, if we have one, is to raise happy people who will be good citizens and members of society. I'd really like for them to study and get a job doing something that they love as life is better that way - if that means doing something practical rather than academic then that's fine.

Despite all that, these parents do make me feel like I am not doing something that I should be and that they will regret in the future not reaching their academic potential - who knows?

Soon hopefully! I was really looking forward to shouting at the screen watching it this morning.

CruCru · 28/07/2014 16:53

I have a really stupid question - how do you know your kids' IQs, myotherusernameisbetter? I am not trying to be goady, I haven't met anyone who has had their kids' tested.

Aeroflotgirl · 28/07/2014 17:37

Woe betide they have a child with SN who might fall short of their over inflated expectations. Disclaimer my dd is 7 and has ASD and dev delays

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 18:06

My dds IQ has been tested as part of her assessment for an autistic spectrum disorder.

However I don't have an actual IQ score but 3 different scores for Verbal, Performance & Full Scale IQ so I don't know if its the same kind of test.

I'd be interested to know as the scores differ greatly (153, 114 & 138)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 28/07/2014 18:09

Full scale IQ is the IQ score, pictures.

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 18:19

Thanks LRD. I TRIed to google it but just came up with stuff about if there is a big difference it's to do with pictures.

So her IQ is 138.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 28/07/2014 18:25

No worries. I know because I'm dyslexic and you have lots of tests for that in the same way.

Her IQ is 138, but given the variation is so big, it doesn't tell you as much as if her scores were closer together - it might very well be she performs as if her IQ were much higher in some ways (or of course much lower in some).

LRDtheFeministDragon · 28/07/2014 18:25

(I hasten to add, when I say 'in the same way,' I will point out mine are much lower down the charts! Grin)

myotherusernameisbetter · 28/07/2014 18:30

My two were tested as part of a research project by the local Uni. The scores were initially not meant to be communicated. The primary they attended was rated as "deprived" and the chap who was liaising with parents contacted us re the scores as he was surprised to find such scores Hmm in their school. He suggested we try for a scholarship at the local private school. We didn't - they were happy and doing well enough where they were.

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 18:32

Her verbal IQ is very high. & she's also good at maths but struggles with writing.

It's a small part of an ed psych report which includes CAT scores & all sorts.

Is there anywhere which says what the child genius participants IQs were measured at. I know Aliyahs was mentioned, what about the others?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 28/07/2014 18:36

She might change a lot as she grows up. You tend to - you don't get the same scores and it might be, if she gets a lot of support, that her lower (! at 114!) score goes up. Terrifying thought!

I find it really disturbing Aliyah's parents are so hung up on precise numbers. Sure, you can tell the difference beween a child whose IQ is 90 and one whose IQ is 130. But can anyone honestly tell, talking to a child, whether their IQ is 135 or 145 or 150? I honestly find that extremely hard to believe. Yet they seem so sure she must be worked hard in order to 'catch up' to their oh-so amazing level. Hmm

jonicomelately · 28/07/2014 19:19

Picturesinthefirelight I've asked you to explain a comment you made earlier, and you still have failed to do so. Would you please do so now?

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 19:42

No

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 19:42

The post was in danger of identifying me so mumsnet removed it.

jonicomelately · 28/07/2014 20:22

No

What an incredibly rude person you are Picturesinthefirelight

AnnDaloozier · 28/07/2014 20:25

oh joni give it a rest

jonicomelately · 28/07/2014 20:27

Haha.

DiaDuit · 28/07/2014 20:30

TBF all pictures had to do was explain why she addressed joni. she could even do it via PM if she was worried about privacy. I also wondered why that post was directed at her.

Picturesinthefirelight · 28/07/2014 20:31

It was directed towards a sarcastic comment that she made, ok. I was answering that specific comment which was at the time of typing the last comment on the thread.
