What to watch after Borgen, The Bridge & Forbrydelsen??

I know I could watch English programmes, but watching Danish TV has produced two excellent side results, my children (8-11) vacate the sitting room at 9 as soon as the Danish goes on. Ogsa, min dansk gar godt nu. ha ha. (i'm sure that is full of mistakes)

Have you watched the Swedish series Arne Dahl? It is a bit like the wire in that a slightly degenerate group of police officers are pulled together to form a team to solve a murder. I really loved the characters and found it a bit compelling, and of course quite dark.

The French series Spiral is also good (though I've only seen season one so far)

Broen · 07/04/2014 16:44

Thanks, I might give Arne Dahl a try. I've heard that's good

I liked Salamander (Belgian- some of the words sound a bit Scandinavian though!)

Broen · 07/04/2014 16:49

Ah yeh, I watched the first two episodes of that but I couldn't get in to it. I know I'm being super fussy here but I was hoping for Danish recommendations! I am thinking about unit one or the protectors? I watched Dem Som Draeber and it was ok but only one series.

summer - it sounds a bit scandi as it's Flemish (according to my Dutch friend......). Have heard that is good too.

WowserBowser · 07/04/2014 16:52

The Killing?

PoppadomPreach · 07/04/2014 16:56

Ok, I'm going to through in a curve ball (as it's firstly, not subtitled and secondly, American, and thirdly, it's on ITV)

It's called "The Americans" and it is about this "all American couple" with a couple of kids, living in suburban America, but who are actually KGB agents. It's set in the early 80s when Reagan was in power and there was a huge tension over the "Star Wars" program. Season 2 has just started - which ive yet to start watching - but I just loved season 1 - quite understated but the tension builds and the characters are well developed. Whilst I enjoy Homeland, it's a bit glossy for me at times, whereas The Americans seems to have a bit more of an edge to it.

I apologise for my overuse of "quotes".

HyvaPaiva · 07/04/2014 17:00

The Protectors is pretty good, OP, I'm only a couple of episodes in but enjoying it.

The Eagle is meant to be good. It's about an Icelandic officer who comes to work with the Danish police force.

Look out for a new Danish drama coming soon called 1864. It's about the Danish war and Pilou Asbaek (Kasper from Borgen) has a lead role. Although very different to Nordic Noir, it sounds excellent.

HanSolo · 07/04/2014 18:07

wowser- forbrydelsen is the killing!

WowserBowser · 07/04/2014 18:14

I was worried that was going to happen!

Obviously my Danish is not up to scratch.

Spiral? I haven't seen any of the scandanvian dramas, but enjoyed the first series of this. Violence is graphic from the off however so you would definitely want the kids out of the way before you start.

For something lighter, have you seen Lilyhammer?. Stars Steve Van Zandt as a mobster living in witness protection in Lillehammer after giving evidence against the mafia in New York. Drama, but with a lot of dark humour and in both English and Norwegian.

SnotandBothered · 07/04/2014 18:20

I don't think I will ever love anything as much as I loved The Bridge.

HanSolo · 07/04/2014 18:38

Grin wowser

I loved Borgen best- as much drama and suspense as the other two... but no murder! win-win I say Smile

I take it you've watched all the Wallanders? (I think there are about 20 swedish ones, 3 (6?) british versions with Branagh as wallander

guineapiglet · 07/04/2014 19:31

watch mammon on Friday night Chanel 4.
very good Norwegian crime political drama.

guineapiglet · 07/04/2014 19:31
Blush channel obviously...
RufinaTheStressed · 07/04/2014 19:35

Yes to Wallander and Arne Dahl. Serious tut tutting over your dissing of Salamander ;).

Broen · 07/04/2014 19:43

I know, what could beat The Bridge?!

But.......... while I wait for series three I'll try The Protectors as well.

I have nothing against English TV but I do love the way the sitting room clears and the barn wander off when they hear "hurdy gurdy" Wink What an added bonus.
I missed the first mammon on tv. If it's good I'll watch the whole run.

Dane here ( who feels utterly spoilt getting tv 'from home' on the beeb')

I liked Unit One which is one of the most popular programmes on Danish tv ever ( that might have been before Forbrydelsen). It is not particularly 'noir' and a bit more cosy. One storyline usually takes up 2 episodes. Worth a go.

Another one, that screened here a few years ago ( channel 4 I think) was 'those who kill' -liked that one too - ' fairly noir'. Again I think one storyline to one or two episodes.

Hope that helps. Mor dig godt!

vikingnc · 07/04/2014 20:03

Oh. And how could I forget, the 'Millenium' trilogy of course! In the Swedish version

Broen · 07/04/2014 20:05

I'm so square-eyed, i've watched the millenium trilogy! loved them.

Broen · 07/04/2014 20:07

vikingnc, I watched Dem som Draeber (is that right). I liked the format, six film length episodes. But the characters didn't grab me in the same way as Saga Birgitte or Sara! Love all the strong female characters though.

ps, I know I am an utter nerd Blush but when i realised that broen is THE bridge because they put the the at the end if it's definite and at the beginning if it's indefinite, well, now I hear it all around me. I know I'm far from having conversational Danish here, but I have learnt a lot just from vegging in front of a screen. And ok, yes, occasionally I pressed pause and think, what did they say there. And then I repeat it! Blush

You might enjoy the indie film Headhunters which was written by Jo Nesbø and is darkly entertaining.

There is a void without the bbc4 slot being filled by scandi crime drama, but yes Spiral( Engrenages) is good and Mannon on ch4 is worth a look. ( rather of IMHO)Confused the Belgian crime drama Salamander might be worth a look. If you haven't seen The Wire , Breaking Bad or House of Cards you might enjoy the dark-side of those too.
Plenty of scandi crime to read too.
Can recommend if you are interested.Smile

vikingnc · 07/04/2014 20:49

I agree about those who kill op ( well done! Du er meget dygtig), but I fear Denmark might not be able to keep up with your hunger for more ;-)
You could try some of the highly rated movies from the last decade or so. Unfortunately I have a pile of DVDs ( mostly featuring Mads Mikkelsen, which incidently is also in unit one) sitting in boxes still unopened as I haven't had time to watch, so I'm no good for recommendations. If you want book recommendations, though, I'd say give Jussi Adler Olsen's department Q books a go. First one is called 'Mercy' in the UK. That one is now in cinemas too in Denmark. Haven't seen it yet, but reviews were good.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/04/2014 20:51

You could branch out into Danish cinema. I can't recommend Festen (the Celebration), Italian for Beginners or The Hunt enough, though both Festen and The Hunt are dark, serious stuff.
