Has anyone tried to put together a list of their top 10 TV mums? I can't think of any that I really like to watch at the moment.

You're right, I've never really thought about that before ... there aren't that many 'realistic' bad mums ... they tend to be slightly chaotic but well-meaning like Susan in Outnumbered or Lois or Roseanne. The mums that are seen to struggle the most are those on Supernanny ...

Catelyn Stark from GOT

Miranda in Sex and the City seemed to show the difficulty of balancing work and family life ... not new I know but thought she was quite 'realistic' without being seen as a mum martyr.

Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls
Roseanne
Jill Taylor from Home Improvement

Sitcom mums seem to be the most popular on these lists, is the ability to laugh at and with them important to us mums?

I love Marge Simpson. Off topic a bit but we all watched the best ever Simpsons Christmas special last night where they get Santa's Little Helper. When we watch that Christmas beings Smile

Sheldon's mum in TBBT is one of my heroines.
'Shower, shave and let's shove off' ....brilliant........

Birgitte Nyborg in Borgen shows perfect life/work balance.......and impeccable hair!!!

Thought I liked Gemma in SoA but just seen her in last episode of season 6 :(

Tennyson · 17/12/2013 14:39

I have seen that HBO are going to remake Borgen in the US, it will be interesting to see how they present the work/life balance of the prime minister ... my sense is that they won't be so flattering.

Frankie heck from the middle

Just been watching Californication and quite like the mum in that show ... dotes on her daughter but not has her own life/interests/relationships/friendships. She manages to balance the martyr/selfish divide that we see in much tv today.

Bill in 2 point 4 children was the best tv mum ever.

Or mummy pig. Grin

YesAnastasia · 13/01/2014 11:57

Another for Lorelai Gilmore and Alicia Florrick.

They're who I'd like to be. But sadly I think I'm the Mum from Green Wing (not as bad though...) harassed, disorganised and always with a biscuit or a bit of toast stuck to my clothes somewhere.

Tennyson · 13/01/2014 12:16

I forgot about Bill from 2.4 children ... she reminds me of the no-nonsense Roseanne/Jill Taylor/Lois school of mothering. I admire the harsh but effective style of parenting ... I am much more of a push-over where the little ones are concerned, and they know it!

I have just been catching up with Grey's Anatomy and I think that there are some really interesting mothers being shown on that programme, Miranda Bailey is pretty inspiring because she is hugely maternal but remains a dedicated professional ... using her newfound maternal instinct to improve her medical career. She is of course seen struggling with the two roles at times, but even with those struggles it offers an interesting and hard-working role model. Really wish I had come to watch this programme sooner. Am I the only one who is so taken with Miranda or is she maybe just a little too impressive to be likeable?

Mrs Brown!

If anyone is interested in finding out about the ways in which mums respond to the depiction of mums on television, then please take a look at my research findings. Many mumsnet mums were kind enough to complete my questionnaire, and your responses shaped the research: motherhoodandtelevision.wordpress.com/executive-summary/.

Calling all creatives in Film, TV, Advertising, Photography, Publishing, Gaming and Digital Platforms ...
Please let me know if any of you feel inspired to imagine or create stories about mums who shatter the existing stereotypes of the 'yummy' and 'slummy' mummy that we continue to see on television, as set out in my research summary from speaking to mums on mumsnet: motherhoodandtelevision.wordpress.com/executive-summary/.

Mrs Warrinder in Just Good Friends. Excellent at scathing remarks and withering looks. Beautifully snobby too.

Clawdy · 12/07/2017 23:11

When I'd just had my fourth child, I was really struggling, and I used to sit feeding the baby and watching Clare Rayner on breakfast tv, and wishing she was my mum! I imagined her sweeping in, and ordering me up to bed for a long sleep while she sorted out everything downstairs.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 13/07/2017 15:16

I hated Lorelai Gilmore as a person but she was an excellent mum. I love when she put Christopher in his place after he said about Rory "the first kid turned out OK" and she corrected him by saying she didn't "turn out" ok, a lot of hard work and effort and sacrificing went into Rory by Lorelai and Lorelai only.

Also, Xiomara in Jane the Virgin doesn't get enough credit, and I think gets a very hard time from Alba

TheSecretMrsFairbrother · 13/07/2017 16:00

Cersei Lannister. Not reallyGrin

YY to Frankie Heck and Joyce Summers.

MusicToMyEars800 · 15/07/2017 11:49
