Digerd - you must know SEB, surely?! (Although, to be fair, I only knew SEB, Dave and Susanna.)

FrankelInFoal · 03/11/2013 21:04

The pros generally do their own choreography for the standard 10 dances (waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, tango, Viennese waltz, Cha Cha Cha, rumba, samba, jive and Paso Doble) plus American Smooth, but they have help for salsa, charleston and Argentine Tango and any other dances that get thrown in because they won't have trained in them to a high enough standard, if at all.

DaveBussell · 03/11/2013 21:11

I still have no idea who Rachel is/was.

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:14

That's interesting, thanks Frankelln Smile. In that case, surely the pro partner's choreography skills make a huge difference to the outcome? Some of them seem to be really good at showing their celeb partners off to their best advantage (although, admittedly, it's hard to compare since the celebs all have different aptitudes).

It also explains why some of the pros have looked... less than comfortable... doing the Charleston! Grin

I'm a Strictly newbie, and had no idea that the jive was a standard dance - it looks so different from the others! It must be very difficult to get right - the only one I've enjoyed so far is Ashley's.

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:14

Dave - isn't she Carol Vorderman's replacement on Countdown?

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:17

Another random Strictly question: should I start watching It Takes Two, or is it just like the "filler" bits on the Saturday night show? I'd really like to learn more about the week's dances, rather than just seeing footage of the celebs' families and random "field trips"! Also, DH's patience may be tested to the limit if he has to hear the Strictly theme 3 times per week...

coffeeinbed · 03/11/2013 21:17

I have no idea!
But I can see some of them were less than chuffed with their celeb partners!
Whatever their choreographic abilities being paired with say Vanessa Feltz or Dave is severely limiting their chances of winning.

digerd · 03/11/2013 21:18

Don't watch much telly these days since getting little dog and being on mumsnet toomuch--Grin

AmIthatHot · 03/11/2013 21:22

Good news - no Forsyth next week

Bad news - no Pash. My heart is broken Sad

digerd · 03/11/2013 21:23

When Ian is on he is very good at explaining what is good and bad and how it should be. Can't remember which day he is on ITT.

FrankelInFoal · 03/11/2013 21:23

ITT is much more informative these days, they get Karen Hardy (who won Strictly with Mark Ramprakash and should have taken over from Arlene as the female judge IMHO) to dissect the choreography from the previous Saturday on Tuesday nights and on Wednesdays Ian Waite comes in to go over the training footage and point out good/bad points.

Jive is very much a standard Latin dance, it's the one I struggle with the most!

FamiliesShareGerms · 03/11/2013 21:24

I think you can tell which dancers are clever choreographers and coaches (eg Ola,, Kristina, Brendan, Natalie...). Being a great professional dancer doesn't automatically equal being able to turn someone else into a dancer and cover up their weaknesses in a clever way.

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:27

Oh yes, the celebs definitely contribute the most to the "un-level playing field" - I was really impressed by some of the pro dancers' ability to keep their game faces on when they found out who they'd be partnered with, back in Week 1! Grin

Digerd - Dogs are much more fun than TV, so you are exonerated Wink. Which breed do you have, if you don't mind me asking? I'd love one, but haven't come across a small breed that would suit us yet...

IndiansOnTheRailroad · 03/11/2013 21:30

The best (cleverest) choreographer by a mile is Artem. He has found the knack of completely pushing all Craig and Bruno's buttons (also Aleesha and now Darcy) thus ensuring v high marks, while infuriating Len (thus ensuring an unfair low mark which garners sympathy votes) and also generally entrancing the viewers and studio audiences too (so, standing ovations, lots of votes etc).

I happen to like his choreography the best too, but that's a matter of taste. But the sheer cleverness of him - that's precision engineering that is.

IndiansOnTheRailroad · 03/11/2013 21:32

Brendan on the other hand is a terrible choreo - his dances work for a certain type of dancer and that's it. He doesn't seem to have much variation in his repertoire. And everything is designed to show off how great he is.

I really miss Vincent and Flavia. :(

DaveBussell · 03/11/2013 21:33

Thanks Nom - haven't watched countdown for years

FrankelInFoal · 03/11/2013 21:35

Aliona was the worst choreographer of the lot, I recall Len having a go at her for one of her routines for Rav Wilding because it was all about her. She got better as time went on, but quite often threw a "look at what I can do" into her routines.

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:36

Indians - I agree completely, based on this series. I love the fact that his dances are consistently interesting but not as repetitive and predictable as some of the others, but I don't know how much of that is due to the fact that he has a much more able partner (I haven't seen any of the previous series).

Brendan and Sophie's dances do very little for me, which is a shame as I really like SEB and I loved their Charleston. The foxtrot they did was lovely as well, to be fair...

awaynboilyurheid · 03/11/2013 21:37

Poor Rachel at last she did a good dance only to go out she really loved it and Pascha always seems such a nice man so felt very sorry for them, liked the comedy element of Dave at the start but as he's playing it straight now the dancing doesn't work Anton always keeps the comedy element in when he knows they are crap dancers so its entertaining somehow, don't know why but Susannah annoys me its irrational as I like kevin he is a really good dancer so want him to do well but Susannah comes over as very pushy uber confident kind of person . another vote for why don't they just explain the dances not rubbish haunted house visits etc its awful. Oh andNom going off piste for a moment , Lhaso Apso female dogs are lovely ! don't cast hair and can walk them for miles or shorter walks ours has the best nature ever.

FushandChups · 03/11/2013 21:41

Coffee and Frankel - i didn't mean because Ola has won she was necessarily better but just that Karen was a bit daft to say what she did - which was Ola should be at the back as she's a crap dancer (is that right?) when she's actually really popular.

I never manage to convey what i mean and anyway, Strictly is the be all and end all, isn't it Grin

NomDeOrdinateur · 03/11/2013 21:47

Thanks, Awaynboilyurheid - I just googled Lhaso Apso and they're beautiful! I may have to start working on DH... Grin Are they reasonably bright and trainable, in your experience? I only have experience of labs and GSD crosses at present, and I'd like something similarly intelligent. I love the idea of a Scottie, but I think working dogs need more stimulation than I can guarantee for an entire decade...

thistlelicker · 03/11/2013 21:54

I've got a Lhasa! I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is lovely :-)

awaynboilyurheid · 03/11/2013 21:57

Em... would like to say mine is but she's a bit of a softie and not the brightest ! but all dogs like her as they see she is not a threat to anyone ! but know a few other Lhaso's and they seem more intelligent and trainable they can be stubborn we have to walk the same route in the park or she just stops ! but for sheer good naturedness (sorry not a real word) she is great and I'm not a dog lover really .

indians is right Artem is the best choreographer on SCD at the moment
and I love when he lets the celebrity take the limelight but its all down to him at times , Kristina is clever too in that she does all the hard work to make you think her celeb is good but the rugby man is not great no matter how she throws herself around him , she's like Anton though they never give her a good partner which is a shame.

mrsjay · 03/11/2013 21:57

I really miss Vincent and Flavia.

so do I love his hips and her hair I always liked them , I do love artem though i would love to lick him see him live he does a lot of show dancing though ,

I am loving keven from grimsby and susanna and would like them to win , shame Rachel went though surprised the bottom 2, I just realised I know who abby clancy is but i am not sure what she does Confused

did you all hear about the Karen (dancer) and Ola spat or should I read the thread

mrsjay · 03/11/2013 21:58

offee and Frankel - i didn't mean because Ola has won she was necessarily better but just that Karen was a bit daft to say what she did - which was Ola should be at the back as she's a crap dancer (is that right?) when she's actually really popular.

well looks likei should have read the thread Grin
