Or am I just an old gimmer with a period drama fetish Wink

Glad Baby Sybil is saved from more abuse, not feeding her :(

FreyaFridays · 22/09/2013 22:39

Daisy's probably more like mid-twenties. She was only starting out in series one, so was probably aged between 14 and 16.

TheBookofRuth · 22/09/2013 22:40

You're right, of course Chubfudler. I didn't think about that.

BOF · 22/09/2013 22:41

Widows in Victorian times were expected to wear full mourning for two years Shock

Chubfuddler · 22/09/2013 22:41

Clearly we are going to have to call obrien Mark II Evil Edna

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 22/09/2013 22:41

Well, let's face it, back in the real world if your DH died you'd have had to go back to work and get on with things a lot earlier than 6 months later. Mary has been wallowing a bit. Loved the deathly exchange with Edith about go be happy in London - d'you reckon Mary was regretting telling Edith there was no point in trying to be friends after Sybil's death?

Poor Daisy. She needs a decent boyfriend! I love her.

Oooh, look, a will/mysterious letter. Hang on, where have we seen that before? Oh yes, Lavinia's father managed to write to Matthew and tell him to spend her money just as he pleased. Hmm Nul points for originality, JF.

hudyerwheesht · 22/09/2013 22:41

Yeah, series one is set only about 10 years ago and Daisy was only a scullery maid so would have been young.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/09/2013 22:41

Sorry, yes grey/lilac is half mourning, I knew that. But I wasn't sure how long she'd have to wear black for.

If it were six months for a husband, then she's bang on the nose, and it's just lucky that the scriptwriting Carson's tough love means she can symbolically move into half mourning and become more cheerful at the same time.

HarderToKidnap · 22/09/2013 22:43

1910 wasn't it? So twelve years ago. She's 26 at the youngest, and who is still a scullery maid after twelve flipping years?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 22/09/2013 22:44

Did you notice everyone wearing purple at one point - were they all supposed to be in half mourning, d'you reckon? Edith dropped it in London, though.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/09/2013 22:44

Good point Harder we are 10 years on from
series one and everyone looks exactly the same age as they did then.

FreyaFridays · 22/09/2013 22:44

1912 is when the Titanic sank, not 1910. Daisy isn't a scullery maid anymore, she's the assistant cook.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/09/2013 22:45

I presume so, the whole family mourns don't they? Especially for an heir. I remember them doing it in the first series.

hudyerwheesht · 22/09/2013 22:46

Can someone clarify something re all the popping off to London that seems to go on with such ease:isn't the fictional Downton up North somewhere, so wouldn't it have taken hours and hours on a (steam)train to get to London?
They always seems to be flitting off there at a moment's notice and come back remarkably quickly....

HarderToKidnap · 22/09/2013 22:46

Just checked, only ten years, so she could be 24. Still, time for a
A promotion or something?

Moln · 22/09/2013 22:46

oh never knew lavender was a mouring colour. half or otherwise

NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/09/2013 22:47

Many cross posts. 1912 as Titanic sank in the first episode. And I don't think Daisy is a scullery maid anymore didn't she get promoted up to being assistant or trainee cook in the last series? When your man was trying to get her to go and live on the farm with him

HarderToKidnap · 22/09/2013 22:48

Ok, all my premises were wrong!

Still, just think she is still played as a fairy voiced petulant silly child. Not much character development, even after every thing that's happened to her.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/09/2013 22:48

Ah I'm too slow to keep up just keep repeating what other people say Grin

FreyaFridays · 22/09/2013 22:49

I thought that about the London thing, hudyerwheesht! They all act like London is just down the road, but surely it would have taken the better part of a day from North Yorkshire on a steam train?!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/09/2013 22:49

I agree Harder she just seems the same.

Moln · 22/09/2013 22:50

I think that's been a thing since the start hudyer. I can only presume it's a special express steam train, which fatty bum bought in his squandering years. or maybe London was much more North in the early 20th century

hudyerwheesht · 22/09/2013 22:50

Exactly Freya, glad it's not just me.
Steam trains were much slower but everyone acts as if it's a short commute away..Hmm

singinggirl · 22/09/2013 22:51

I think school leaving age was only about 12 in 1912, so Daisy could be as young as 22.

FreyaFridays · 22/09/2013 22:51

Doesn't do much for the viewers across the pond, who believe we all live a stone's throw from the Thames anyway, does it?
