Essential viewing. My Pete is in the montage of people (usually top middle head shot with glasses), tho they did swop them around at some add breaks. The picie was taken a few months after his op. Is the montage everyone who had an op that year or everyone who was on the list? He found it interesting to see it from the angle of the waiting families, the 'outside' cos he didn't see that aspect of it.

Lucy looks lovely.

Was shocked and a bit annoyed at girl smoking. When P was assessed at Papworth they said we will not put people on the list who smoke and that the assessment test can tell if you have smoked recently. Surprised they put her on the list in view of this.

Its good to see this issue getting much more publicity now. We were shocked - they all seemed to have DCM! They described it as 'rare' but I thought it was fairly common as far as heart probs go. Apparntly is the most common reason for a heart transplant. But nobody apart from those affected seems to have heard of it. Progs like this help.

Aren't the statistics shocking. One month only 4 were done! Papworth seem to do roughly 1-2 per week on average. When I tell people the no of ops done last yr (can't remember the fig now) they are shocked, they think its much more and most people don't realise that only 6 hospitals do it.

Must watch next week in preparation for Transplant Week. Has motivated me to get a display up at work.

Thinking of you Misdee as usual. I know you know some of the people and places on the prog which must make it even more difficult.

I can't believe I missed it!Sounds like it will do a lot to promote donation and highlight the shortage of organs.

misdee · 30/06/2006 12:53

the average time has (un)officially increased.

there wasnt a transplant done in jan at harefield.

Hope I'm not thread jumping, but would be great if you could clarify something for me. Presumably its a good idea to carry a donor card because if they find one they can get started with preparing for donation? I used to carry one but lost it and never replaced it, although I have discussed donation with my family so they know that this is what I would want, but thinking about it, would it cause delays if they had to wait to get in touch with my next of kin?. Is it important that I pull my finger out and replace my donor card or is it enough to inform my family of my wishes? Sorry if this sounds stupid.

misdee · 30/06/2006 13:21

to be prepapred for donating the body has to be kept alive. so most peoples deaths arent of any use to be honest. A head trauma is (i hate talking like this sorry) the ideal situation, as the person has to be brain dead before they can take organs. (hospitals will try and save everyone, even if carrying a donor card, thats a myth that if they find a card they wont try to save you).

next of kin have to be informed, before harvesting can happen.

misdee - Have you seen the thread on Heartline about Molly's Dolly's? They're dolls with scars to help children come to terms with their own CHD - maybe you could get one for the girls?

misdee · 06/07/2006 22:43

i dont know if the doll would be able to fit all of peters scars on
