Sometimes they do make little noises and open their eyes etc. but it's the cold air and sudden recoil of the chest (amongst other things) that makes them gasp and cry.

Then I think its mostly because the lungs are still too squashed for them to draw a breath although my little cousin was squawking when only his head was out apparently so sometimes they doSmile

Oh thanks, why do the only do it sometimes? Is it the ones who have epidurals/inductions etc where they need more monitoring?

the clip on baby's head is a fetal scalp electrode it monitors the baby's heartbeat. Reasons it is used are usually because the ctg is not maintaining good contact so keep losing the heartbeat.
