All I wanted to say was Jonathan Rhys Meyers?

Cried most of the way through that one again Blush

Did anyone else think Cora looked like she had an iPad in bed with her right at the beginning when she was telling Lord G to stay on the dressing room?!

The baby was humongous.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/10/2012 22:30

Ah, x-posts about the iPad :o

QuickLookBusy · 21/10/2012 22:30

Ijustwant, DD and I thought she had an IPad too but it was a book.

I love Dame Maggie.

Very sad this week again, Cora is playing the part very well.

anonacfr · 21/10/2012 22:40

I kept thinking Cora was clutching a Kindle!

Can I just say the whole Bates storyline has sickened me. After all this shit he's coming out of jail? Two minutes ago the were going to hang him and now they're letting him on the most random circumstantial evidence? The whole thing is laughable.
I take it we're all meant to think it's all wonderful and romantic but it's making me want to stop watching the whole show.
I'm also concerned about the Thomas storyline. It's looking ominously sordid.

Ironically after hating Pickles the whole of the second season I thought he was the most touching today. His reaction when Mary told him about Sybil wanting the baby to be Catholic was lovely, as well as the not wanting to be separated from his daughter. When stupid Lord 6 misunderstood Matthew and went on his tirade he was amazingly calm and restrained. Sybil would have been proud!

I now like all the characters who used to annoy me- Edith, Cora, Isabel and Pickles. Mrs Patmore is also rather cool!

Mollydoggerson · 21/10/2012 22:50

Why couldn't I find this thread earlier. All has been said, I think.

TheDeathAndGlories · 21/10/2012 23:16

My liking of Cora was clinched with the pudding comment when lord 6 was being an arse

Lua · 21/10/2012 23:21

So, does Jimmy fancy Daisy?
He seem to be portrayed as a sensible young man this episode, am wondering if Daisy will realize what a big child bean pole is, and run away with Jimmy to run the farm?

I tought the scene with M&M holding the baby was a bit creepy.... looks like they are being given the baby ISWIM.... Perhaps they were trying on the Godparents glove.

I agree that the whole Mr. Bates tory line in prison never felt very believable. Hard to believe he is being released and all will end up well. But it ought to lead to a better storyline...

I tought lord G was again very unkind to the doctor , given he was there trying to save his marriage.

Saltire · 21/10/2012 23:21

I think the acting from Elizabeth McGovern in the last 2 episodes has been fab. Getting a bit annoyed with Lord 6 now though, maybe he needs a wee spell in the jail...oh no better not write that in case JF is reading, cannot stand it if anyone else ends up in prison

Its not as if the Bates actor has had much to do, "right Bates, just walk round in a circle and bore the viewers shitless"... and "that it Bates, round and round good lad"

tribpot · 21/10/2012 23:26

Ah, i see we have had competing threads running tonight.

My thoughts:

I see the Redemption Via the Dead Partner's Father theme continues ...

and

.. Glad there was no funeral, I think that would have been too much to bear.

But great lines for Dame Maggie again.

BlueMoon1084 · 21/10/2012 23:39

Lua as far as I can make out it seems to be some sort of love pentagon with Thomas fancying Jimmy, who fancies Daisy, who fancies Alfred, who fancies Ivy.

Glad Bates is being released next episode. Not sure I could have taken several weeks of knowing he's going to be released but trying to work out if he's going to be killed before he actually gets released. Have had enough of the prison scenes now.

LineRunner · 21/10/2012 23:55

I'll think you'll find that Lady Cora was in bed with the Book of Common Prayer.

NerdAmigo · 22/10/2012 07:15

I'm hoping Matthew will stage a coup.

ScorpionQueen · 22/10/2012 09:04

This series started off a bit slow but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's been an emotional rollercoaster.
Did they have rollercoasters then?
:)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/10/2012 09:18

The below stairs love pentangle is annoying me, it keeps drip dripping along but nothing ever actually happens. I'm glad Bates is out but only si that storyline is over, will he come back as valet?

I'm glad the women are all sticking together over the Ethel business also the Catholic baptism for the baby, Lord G needs to get with the 20th century.

Whitamakafullo · 22/10/2012 09:29

My favourite line was when they were in the kitchen and the guy (I can't remember their names!) said that Jesus never ate with Mary Magdalene, but he let her wash his feet, and the Scottish one retorted with 'oh well, I'll let Ethel know she's in for a treat then' Grin

Loving the feminism of last night's show

ppeatfruit · 22/10/2012 10:21

yes i really enjoyed last night's great acting, a kick up the bum for the dinosaur males brilliant!! a good cry etc.

Chubfuddler · 22/10/2012 10:25

The bit about the pudding was hilarious - v first series. Coras tone was brilliant. McGovern has really upped her game in the last few episodes.

ZZZenAgain · 22/10/2012 11:03

I agree with you anon, I didn't like Cora, Edith or Isobel in the first series but they are all growing on me.

If William's dad is a reasonably well-off tenant farmer , owning his own tools, stock and with money in the bank, why was William's mother so keen for him to go into service? Wouldn't it have made more sense for him to stay on the farm and learn to run it with a view to taking it over one day? Or was being a servant a step up from being a farmer?

Animation · 22/10/2012 11:25

"I'm also concerned about the Thomas storyline. It's looking ominously sordid"

Anon - I feel the same about that. Thomas just needs a bit of love in his life. The other guy (forget his name), needs to let him know he's not that way inclined without making a big deal about it.

Animation · 22/10/2012 11:27

Yes, glad the 'master' got a big kick up the fatty bum bum!!

Chubfuddler · 22/10/2012 11:33

Problem is animation homosexuality was a massive deal. And illegal. There is no way Thomas could say "I fancy you actually" and expect Jimmy to either say ooh yes please or sorry mate not that way inclined no hard feelings. That's why it's all manly squeezes on the shoulder and you're a lovely person nonsense.

I think obrien is going to encourage Thomas to make a pass and jimmy is going to beat up or even kill Thomas. Or perhaps Thomas will commit suicide.

I really feel for Thomas this series. He's about to lose his job as valet, he's genuinely upset about Sybil and he still hasn't found love.

Arithmeticulous · 22/10/2012 11:38

The Dowager grabbing onto the mantelpiece for support as Cora sobbed Sad

The size of that baby was obscene.

Bates needs a wash.

Animation · 22/10/2012 11:46

Chub - think you could be right that O'brien will encourage Thomas! And blimey yes, he could commit suicide - I seem to remember he had a bit of a breakdown once before - in the shed. Not looking good.

I'm nervous.Sad

Chubfuddler · 22/10/2012 11:46

I thought the same thing zzzz but I think pre war there was a massive kudos in working as a senior servant at a great house (he was footman and hoped to be a valet and maybe even butler one day). . If anything there aren't enough servants to be realistic even for 1920. An earls housekeeper would probably have her own servants whose job was to wait on her.
