Oh, god, that poor family, how hard to have a heartbreak like that during the pregnancy

midori1999 · 11/09/2012 21:44

Lottie, I am so sorry about your oldest son.

I am suprised (although given my treatment during pregnancy I don't know why) about how matter of fact the sonographer was when telling those poor parents that one of their babies had died. I know she said 'sorry', but it seemed habit rather than meant. I also know they must become used to it, but still. Sad

I love Freddie's doctor. So warm

CamelKnees · 11/09/2012 21:47

Lottie I'm really sorry about Jack

lucjam · 11/09/2012 21:51

the sonographer didn't even look at them or stop and explain it, if I had been the mother I think I would have felt confusion to begin with, strange behaviour

LostInWales · 11/09/2012 21:51

That wasn't a sonographer, that was a doctor, huge difference. To be fair the world they work in they will see a lot more death than any of us would dream. Dunno, still seemed a bit harsh to me. We don't see what she said before though, there could have been an in depth discussion of what they could find and whether they wanted telling straight away. I would hope.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 11/09/2012 21:52

Lottie, I remember you from another thread. So sorry about little Jack.

Midori, I know, I think they get blase. In fact, a few of the sonographers who dealt with me in my second pregnancy were very unfeeling. I got pretty much told off at an early scan because I thought DD2 was 8 weeks and the woman said she was only 6+5. She frowned at the screen and said nothing for ages, while DH and I nearly passed out holding our breath, ad then she went 'well, it's not 8 weeks'. I said 'never mind 8 weeks, can you see a heartbeat?' and she went 'oh, yes' as if it was obvious. Angry

Pickles77 · 11/09/2012 21:53

I'm sorry I had to turn off a while back x

midori1999 · 11/09/2012 21:55

The lady was a sonographer wasn't she?

However, that said, when a doctor (senior reg I think) scanned me when my waters had first broken (at 14+5) and they hadn't believed me prior to scanning, she said 'oh yes, they have broken' and when I asked what that meant, she just said 'you will probably miscarry both babies'. Then looked suprised when I burst into tears. I was there with a friend as my husband was abroad FFS and you have just told me my much wanted babies may die. Sad

Sorry TooImmature, I hate to hear things like that. I really wanted to be a sonographer, I hope I would have never have been so lost in the job I forgot the basics.

Beautiful babies coming now, lovely.

FrankelSaysRelax · 11/09/2012 21:58

Aww, to paraphrase Toby from West Wing "Babies come with hats"

sailorsgal · 11/09/2012 22:00

Thankfully they have a big house. Grin

midori1999 · 11/09/2012 22:00

Both gorgeous 'sets' of triplets. That larger family seem so lovely.

Seems silly Midori but as she was reading out the measurements to some minion to write down I presumed she was a doctor. Plus she had nice clothes not a vile scratchy uniform. Sorry you had a crap experience too, if I could have an extra 100 hours a week I would train and make it my job that no one gets to experience such crap tactlessness.

NellyBluth · 11/09/2012 22:20

I'm a bit behind, but the consultant with the twins where one sadly died is absolutely wonderful. I was also Shock at the way the sonographer broke the news (I had scans a Kings, the sonographers don't wear uniforms there). But the consultant was so lovely. That poor couple.

Zara1984 · 13/09/2012 15:52

Just watched this now (had it recorded) - amazing stuff but so sad about the twin that died in utero Sad

Does anyone know when the new season of regular OBEM starts??? I'm 34 weeks and would like to see some new episodes before baby gets here! Grin

Preferthedogtothekids · 14/09/2012 17:57

I think the 'Sonographer' was actually the Registrar to the Consultant. I am also pretty sure that the couple would have been well prepared that the scan may well show something tragic so I don't think it was a 'regular' scan event, but a bit more intense anyway. I thought the news was delivered quite sensitively by the Doctor, she was honest, clear and offered them the opportunity to stop a couple of times. She did sound practical though and she obviously wanted to focus on their healthy baby. I'm not sure what else she could have done?
