He should have been with the horses all along (after his brother's intervention before he even left London) but the message was delayed, and when the General received it he refused to move Chrissy because he was the only officer with much intelligence. I think he was also pissed off at being told what to do with one of his own officers.

Then yes, Christopher mortally offended horse-guy, who would have been his superior had he moved there. But yes, he had to be moved because he punched Potty and then accused the other General (who already had it in for him) of being drunk.

I think Sylvia is incredibly angry with Christopher because she can't manipulate him in the way she can virtually every other man on the planet. She wants to break him like a wilful horse, even if that means she denies herself human touch for five years! She's very stubborn.

I have to say Diddl, that I think his behaviour on the train with Sylvia was supposed to have been completely out of character, and he felt very guilty about it afterwards.

Also meant to say - by the 'last good man', I don't mean a living saint who has no baser desires, I mean someone who has them like everyone else, but strives to rise above them (succeeding most of the time). Which is why it's a tragedy when he realises the world has stopped giving a shit about values he holds so dear.

TheTermagantToaster · 17/09/2012 10:42

Baser? Base, obvs.

herethereeverywhere · 17/09/2012 11:09

I can't see a happy ending coming for Christopher Sad thought I do want him to run off into the sunset with Val.

Is this week the last episode? They have crammed a lot in considering its 4 books.

herethereeverywhere · 22/09/2012 17:50

Anyone watch the last episode last night ?

TheTermagantToaster · 22/09/2012 17:57

Am planning on watching tonight on iPlayer. Fingers crossed for a happy ending...

Dozer · 22/09/2012 20:24

Was weird ending.

What was the thing with macmaster?

herethereeverywhere · 22/09/2012 20:32

It seemed to cram a lot in. In episode 3 it is mentioned that Christopher has lent a lot of money to Mcmaster. Then we see Christopher go off to war whilst Mcmaster stays and is knighted mainly due to work that Christopher has done that Mcmaster took credit for. I think the bit where they look at each other out the window was supposed to symbolise Christopher not going over and demanding the money back like Edith thinks he will, he is letting it all go and moving on to a separate life with Valantine.
I think anyway Confused

TheTermagantToaster · 22/09/2012 23:20

Agree, here. But he's also not making any effort to resurrect the friendship - no longer a doormat, I think. The whole thing could have done with more exposition.

I imagine in the books that Edith's character has more time to develop, too. She went from lovely lady trapped in awful marriage to scheming social climber very quickly.

In the last episode, Sylvia sleeps with Drake again (father of her son) and uses contraception afterwards. She argues for Campion to get posted to India, and tells her mother she's keen on going on retreat, possibly to India. Then there's an odd very quick scene where she's riding a horse alongside Campion in the park and says 'If I divorce Christopher, will you marry me?' Is this because she fancies getting out and going to India, or had lightning struck twice and she's fallen pregnant by Drake, so wants to use Campion like she used Christopher? Or is it just about going to India?

herethereeverywhere · 24/09/2012 11:25

O I didn't get that she might be pregnant again - good point. I thought it might be a combination of that she wanted to go to India and she wanted another husband so it wouldn't seem that she had been abandoned by Christopher. Or 'thrown over' as she put it.

clangermum · 24/09/2012 14:10

Just a guess - thought it was odd the way they showed her putting the contraption away after sleeping with Drake, and didn't she say something about 'it should be safe'. It would be ironic to have fallen twice by him.

Also she said 'if I divorce Christopher' so I assumed she would be the one initiating it, though it could be taken either way. No idea if women could initiate divorce then even. Earlier on she said she wanted him to sleep with Valentine to give their marriage a chance (or something like that) but maybe when it came to it, if she thought he really loved Valentine, that would be too much for her to bear so she couldn't stay in the marriage. Maybe she assumed Christopher would ask for a divorce because he wouldn't be the type to keep a mistress - he'd want to make Valentine his wife. So 'if I divorce Christopher' might mean if I agree to it. Though again, did a husband need to get a wife's agreement? If not, it would look like she was thrown over for Valentine unless she married again straight away. Then I suppose even if she had no choice in the divorce, people would assume she wasn't that put out.

Think in a little while I'll watch the whole thing again...

wintera · 26/09/2012 20:24

I watched the first ep and switched it off thinking I didn't like it. Then I watched the first ep again and stuck with it, ended up really enjoying it and then watching all the eps in quick succession! I was particularly impressed with Stephen Graham playing McMaster. Seen him in loads of things such as This is England and would never have associated him with something like this but he was great and his Scottish accent was very well done too. No hint of his own scouse one at all!

herethereeverywhere · 27/09/2012 21:09

It sneaks up on you doesn't it ? Smile I have them all recorded and will definitely watch it all again

Also only just realised that he was in This is England !! He was really good.

wintera · 28/09/2012 11:51

Yes I'm glad I gave it another go. Did anyone else think that Valentine was the spitting image of Carey Mulligan? Especially when she had the bob as well. They could play very convincing sisters in something.

wintera · 28/09/2012 11:53

I was also very intrigued by the contraceptive device that Sylvia was using in the last ep. Yikes!!!

clangermum · 28/09/2012 12:53

Carey Mulligan - that's who she reminded me of! I hadn't realised it was niggling me until you said.

herethereeverywhere · 28/09/2012 16:12

I was going to google that contraceptive device but thought better of it ......

wintera · 28/09/2012 17:42

I really want to google it too but like you say - I'm a bit frightened of what might come up in the suggestions. It looked hideous though. Jeez, thank goodness things have moved on since then eh?

TheTermagantToaster · 28/09/2012 18:28

It looked like some kind of douche. God knows what they put in it Shock

wintera · 28/09/2012 18:59

Has anyone seen the film Revolutionary road? That's set in the fifties but the Kate Winslet character uses something similar to do something quite horrible. (not saying in case someone wants to watch it and doesn't want spoilers)
