I haven't watched the first two series but after watching the bridge I've been fancying another Scandinavian type series.

Will I be totally confused because I've missed the other series?

I agree about the gratuitous murder scene, I'm fed up of these now - always a woman, usually a prostitute so it doesn't matter as much. AngryHmm

Yama · 09/07/2012 12:02

The bit where the friend was saying "When will we get her body? When is her funeral?" really pushed home the fact that she was a person despite what society or the police or whoever think. Or did I misread that scene?

MurielTheActor · 09/07/2012 12:20

NB CM Oh thank goodness. Definitely developing a KB crush.d
Yes was very violent.
Main issue I had with it in contrast to the Swedish one that KB played it as being visibly crushed by the weight of the horror he deals with whereas the original two were, not quite repressed, but it never showed in their faces, only in their actions.
But I'll be back for more Smile

all4u · 09/07/2012 12:32

No they are all pretty self-contained
The Branagh is my least fave though as he lacks the charm of the others - in last night's episode he simply walks away from his partner and someone being helpful on the telephone in a rather odd and irritating way! None of the subtitled versions have him quite that anti-social Confused

marge2 · 09/07/2012 12:46

I just kept thinking surely a policeman would be sacked if he carried on that way! He made SO many cock ups. At the end he just trusted that the murders wife wouldn't phone him back. He never calls for back up, just leaps into mad situations.

I hate wallander ( the man, not the show) I kep shouting at his lovely girlfriend to RUN AWAY!!! THINK OF YOUR CHILD!!! Can you imagine trying to bring up a son and look after that twat too? You might attempt it if he was the dad....but jeez - I wouldn't put my kids though that . I mean taking a speaker phone voicemail about a murder case with your family at the dinner table hearing it all???

He's a moron!

Grrrrrrr

But I will wath next week.

Yama · 09/07/2012 12:59

Agree with all of your points Marge2. I actually said out loud "Time to move back to your flat."

Thought he might be in trouble for trespassing.

CrikeyOHare · 09/07/2012 14:06

It's weird - I never fancied KB at all when he was younger, but now he's all craggy and grey, I really, really do Hmm.

Love this show. I think his performance is quite exceptional. Yes, there are enormous plot holes, but there usually are in stuff like this, surely?

Should we be referring to him as Sir KB now, btw - or do we have to wait until he nearly has his head cut off?

bleedingheart · 09/07/2012 14:39

YY OatyBeattie, I said the same to DH, treated as though she were a piece of rubbish and no real need for it to move the plot along.
That scene really upset me. The scene with the dogs and how that ended took me by surprise too, a few expletives were flying in our house!

OatyBeatie · 09/07/2012 15:22

Yes, the scene with the dogs seemed to involve a genuinely interesting, relatively thoughtful piece of violent imagery (if such a thing is ever possible!). So shocking and sudden. But the murder in the car was indulging in the hurt-a-prostitute TV cliche, and as others have said, made her seem used and unimportant (used by the film-makers, I mean, as well as by the murderer).

SoupDragon · 09/07/2012 15:53

Wasn't the point that she was important and so, in the mind of the killer, she had to die?

NellyBluth · 09/07/2012 16:08

Phew... quite pleased to hear I'm not the only one developing a rather unhealthy KB crush - yes, crikey, its the 'grey and craggy' that does it

LaTristesse · 09/07/2012 16:27

I love this drama, the feeling of space and cold is just beautiful.
I was a bit confused though, I don't remember his girlfriend from the previous series', last I remember his daughter had walked out and he had a failed date. Maybe I missed something...
So glad it's back though (love the comment about KB turning into an old lady!) Grin

softpaw · 09/07/2012 16:31

The Killing. The Bridge. Borgen. Also, try to watch the real Swedish Wallenders..Kenneth Branagh is good, but not a patch on the two other Swedish guys who've played him

softpaw · 09/07/2012 16:32

Make sure it's the original Killing, not the American one

softpaw · 09/07/2012 16:38

Also..Henning Mankell,writes the Wallender books..really good

bronze · 09/07/2012 16:39

Have to admit I got quite confused. I normally have no problem following plots but got a
Little lost

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 09/07/2012 17:24

Totally agree about the murder scene. I am sick of seeing young women raped and murdered on our screens

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 09/07/2012 17:26

I think KB acts his socks off in a programme that doesn't really deserve it. It's written in a really stilted way, I can only assume this is the fault of translation

NarkedRaspberry · 09/07/2012 17:32

Kenneth Brannagh makes me feel sick. I really can't stand him.

Wallander (Swedish versions) is great.

peachypips · 09/07/2012 17:33

Totally agree! The Beeb has been showing a lot more violent scenes than ever before recently. Did anyone see that Silent Witness episode where the guy was sodomised with a baton? I don't mind stuff that contributes to the plot (as someone else said- the dog scene was fine- very shocking and full of impact) but surely they could have just found her body instead of so graphically showing her demise?
However, I thought it was a great episode apart from that!

peachypips · 09/07/2012 17:34

I meant found the prostitutes body...

Peggotty · 09/07/2012 17:35

Yes the prostitute murder scene was hard to watch. And it was unrelentingly bleak. But I still liked it. I do have a 'thing' for the Scandinavians though.

I could almost fancy Branagh but unfortunately he has no lips!! He has massively improved with age though.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 09/07/2012 17:37

peachy - yep - totally unnecessary.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 09/07/2012 17:47

I don't get KB either, and the character of Wallander... I just want to shake him. I have no sympathy for him, and really don't care what happens to him. It's slow, for no apparent reason and so dull (visually). Story's ok though - I bet the books are great. Will definitely start reading them.
