I'm sure Parliament reconvenes in September Stealth Grin.

kid · 18/05/2012 22:29

plus3 · 19/05/2012 00:04

Yes series 2 started last Monday next one tonight on 5* and it is freeview. I love it, am getting excited about watching it.

kid · 21/05/2012 16:58

I've seen series 2 already, I'm waiting for series 3 to start.

lollilou · 21/05/2012 18:50

Sorry channel 5 not 5*.

vivandtom · 22/05/2012 09:28

Anyone else struck by the pro-Christian content of the latest series? I know the two main characters are only a couple of red-neck coppers and everybody else is bluecollarish but is the really bible belt America?
I'm starting to wonder if the Walking Dead is sponsored or produced by one of America's christian or church groups.

susiedaisy · 22/05/2012 09:31

Whaaaaaat!!

Oh ok relax it's series two on channel five!!! Grin

vivandtom · 22/05/2012 09:47

Sorry series 2 - surely it can't get any more Christian than this?

It's quite putting me off - and I love zombie stuff.

susiedaisy · 22/05/2012 10:04

I think there are parts of the US that are really Christian hence the name bible belt, although I think the characters are not so much Christian as trying to hold into their morals and humanity, which can come across as being a bit pious at times

anonacfr · 22/05/2012 10:29

Funny I've seen the whole series and I've not found it 'Christian'.

As far as I saw it was a fight between holding on to 'civilised' virtues (Dale) and embracing chaos (Shane) with all the other characters scattered in between.
Interestingly the only real Christian character (Herschel) is portrayed as completed misguided and in denial- as is made more and more obvious through the season.

vivandtom · 22/05/2012 15:27

Did you guys see the scenes in the church? In previous episode?
Practically everybody had a good old pray!!! For about 20 minutes from one character praying to the next - the portrayal of Christianity as a potential saviour in a world without other meaning.
The doctor/vet keeps going on about God - and Rick replying in a similar vein.
Rick - protagonist = absolutely 100% Christian - always looking to God and/or praying

anonacfr · 22/05/2012 21:41

I think maybe praying in the church was a last resort as a symbolic cry for help- the fact that they end up chased out of that church by zombies is quite significant.
I genuinely don't remember Rick as a clear Christian. Yes, he believed in giving people the benefit of the doubt and is sometimes too trusting but as the series progress there is no sign of him believing in God. I guess he indulges Herschel in his strong beliefs though, but I saw it more as politeness and a mark of respect towards the man who saved his son's life.

vivandtom · 23/05/2012 07:52

That's interesting - I view very differently. Rick (and others) regularly implore the help of a 'higher power'. They don't literally expect a Christian God to help them in a Christian church - but the message is clear - the appropriate 'higher power' to invoke is the Chrisitian God.
As you observe, Rick also embodies Christian values which I think is deliberate. If he was simply a Humanist - there wouldn't be the regular Church/God references to heavy handedly explain his moral code/value system.
I don't think it's unusal for US Tv to be 'God' focussed or very moralistic - I just thinnk it's very obvious and clumsily handled in Walking Dead. Sometimes I expect to hear a voiceover at the end - "the Walking Dead was brought to you by the American Baptist Foundation".
And, blindingly obviously, End of Days, and Resurrection and Retribution are of course, MEGA Christian themes and really useful in turning people towards the Church

anonacfr · 23/05/2012 09:53

I thought as they're Southern American it might have been a ingrained instinctive reflex rather than true religious conviction. The only one who seems obviously Christian is Carol. The others aside from the church incident don't mention God at all- as I said Rick only seems to de so when talking to Herschel.

To me the series is about survival and how to achieve it. I'd be interested to see what you think as the whole thing progresses- how many episodes have been shown so far?

StealthPolarBear · 23/05/2012 10:35

I can't remember the church one

OP posts:
susiedaisy · 23/05/2012 15:07

I can't either, I remember a bell ringing and they thought it was other survivors but it turned out to be an automatic bell ring that just went off at set times but can't remember alot else other than there were yucky walkers in the pews obviously Smile

anonacfr · 23/05/2012 20:03

I guess when the first thread developed we were all too busy perving over Darryl... Grin

lollilou · 23/05/2012 20:52

I am still perving over Darryl! Not quite sure how that happened though.Grin

vivandtom · 24/05/2012 13:14

The automated bell ring attracts them to the church and after killing the undead, Rick goes and kneels down and has a good long pray. I think the mother of the missing girl also prays and there's a fair bit of general God talk about how come they are where they are and so on.
It's interesting how very few 'professionals' or intellectuals' seem to have survived so far - the country vet is the most academic/sciency person (other than the CDC guy).
The Christian message may be quite fundamentalist in terms of - abandon science, have no faith in new fangled technology and survive by going back to our 'good ole' roots.
Still zombies are traditionally apocalyptic metaphors but I just expected a bit more than LOST with added zombies.

StealthPolarBear · 24/05/2012 13:16

well Rick's a professional isn't he? and sean?
(Is that his name? been so long since I've seen it)

Just worth at this point mentioning that this is about series 2, not 3, which is coming!!

OP posts:
anonacfr · 24/05/2012 18:46

Actually Andrea is a human rights lawyer.

anonacfr · 24/05/2012 18:46

Useful profession to have in a zombie apocalypse.

StealthPolarBear · 24/05/2012 18:47

:o How on earth do you know that?? Obv we know what rick and sean (??) did and I'm guessing lori was a SAHM, but I have no idea what all the others did!
