My Child The Rioter.... BBC 2 (on now)

SparkleSoiree · 31/01/2012 21:20

A programme interviewing parents of children who have been involved in the summer riots last year.

Am I missing something because some of those parents don't seem to have a major problem with their child being involved in the riots.

Am I about to get piled upon now?? Confused

I'm watching with my jaw on the floor. I don't understand why more people aren't talking about this!

SparkleSoiree · 31/01/2012 21:48

Me too...I am just open-mouthed at it all.

I am amazed at how "not bothered", and in some cases, even approving, these parents seem!

SparkleSoiree · 31/01/2012 21:51

I understand people wanting to protest but it is out right criminality and they don't seem to distinguish between the two..

As for the mum whose son is 'man of the house' because he is older, harder and earns more than anyone else in the house I can't believe it. Why isn't mum head of the house?!?!

God it's amazing. Loving parents just totally failing as parents because they don't know how to use their authority. The mum who let her son throw dad out of the house then he becomes head of the household...Mum, you are head of the household you fool. Not his "friend".

The only one with guts is Daniel's mum.

Missed the backstory with Fabiano. Where's his mum?

IslingtonDi · 31/01/2012 22:00

The only person with more than half a brain cell seems to be Daniel's mother. I hope it all comes right for that family.

SparkleSoiree · 31/01/2012 22:01

Fabiano's mum lives in Brazil from what I could gather...his birth mum she was referred to I think..

Ryan is eventually going to be on the other side of the political fence I think

margoandjerry · 31/01/2012 22:03

At least he seemed scared about his future. Not cocky like Ryan. Or complacent (Lei). As for blonde girl's mum...the fact that your daughter accidentally looted two left footed trainers does not make her innocent of looting. The sentencing was harsh but that's because looting is a crime against society as well as a crime against an individual property owner. God, depressing.

I hope Daniel's mum gets to help her son turn it around.

margoandjerry · 31/01/2012 22:07

Fascinating programme. I was really hoping there'd be people on MN discussing it. It does seem a terrible shame for these young people to have such a massive stain on their characters at such an early stage in their lives - but such carelessness towards society does have consequences.

stargirl1701 · 31/01/2012 22:08

I was speechless.

usualsuspect · 31/01/2012 22:11

I think that plenty of parents would defend their childs actions tbh

PinkCanary · 31/01/2012 22:11

Does Ryan's dad remind anyone of Frank Gallagher?!?

PinkCanary · 31/01/2012 22:14

I now have to wonder if there has always been the same percentage of youth that lacks the basic understanding and empathy that allows us to make moral judgements, or is it a relatively new phenomenon?

mellowcat · 31/01/2012 22:14

I was really moved by Fabiano and his father. I doubt Ryan was even there...just wanted to get his face on telly!

Caoimhe · 31/01/2012 22:14

I was impressed by Daniel's mum - she was intelligent and thoughtful.

Frankly I don't believe that Ryan was even involved (other than watching it on TV!). He was just so ridiculous.

voddiekeepsmesane · 31/01/2012 22:19

I think you are being a bit unfair about Ryan, what just because he actually has (albeit a little warped) political youth veiws.

margoandjerry · 31/01/2012 22:26

With Ryan it was him describing stealing trainers as a political gesture that had me Hmm You could put that down to him being a bloody daft teenager but he seemed pretty delighted to be on TV, parents backing him up all the way.

voddiekeepsmesane · 31/01/2012 22:41

take away the actual looting and once again find the reason behind the riots, though looking back, the subject was done to death in the summer (bows out gracefully)

TheOriginalNutcracker · 31/01/2012 23:47

I am gobsmacked at this programme.

willali · 01/02/2012 07:25

Only one of the parents came out of this with any dignity- the Mum in Hackney. All the others were just desperate to justify/excuse their child's actions, or demonstrated a breathtaking lack of control over their kids (and in Ryans case out and out encouragement).

Most interesting was Fabiano I think- interesting dynamic with the father, you sense there's a whole lot going on with the mother in Brazil, and his transformation from swaggering gangsta to snivelling lost boy.....The father seemed to want to leave his son to make decisions and I had sympathy with that given Fab was 19 but it was clear that a firmer hand on the tiller was required

Jaw dropping but fascinatingly honest- you wonder what the participants felt about how they were shown?

margoandjerry · 01/02/2012 11:30

I think that was part of the power of the film - having the parent and child filmed together and having each of them react to what the other was saying.

Agree re Fabiano. He needed someone to give him direction but dad was waiting for him to say the word. Hopefully that discussion will have helped dad see he needs to set the lead. You wouldn't have to for some 19 year olds but that boy was clearly lost and sad.

noddyholder · 01/02/2012 15:01

very interesting. A couple of seriously over indulged teenagers. 'Protest' boy was like a tribute to alexei sayle in full marx mode he was almost comical in his ignorance.

theonewiththenoisychild · 03/02/2012 17:59

These parents are pathetic morons some of these kids need a belt buckle across their backside Angry

SparkleSoiree · 05/02/2012 19:49

Belt buckle? [sceptical]

We're not in the 1940's.
