Watching it now and think I saw it years ago? It's supposed to be good and based on real life?

Kids are cute Smile

Oh and she is married to David Morrisey!

ThePathanKhansWitch · 03/01/2012 21:39

I watched this last night, was looking at holidays in Morocco. It made me want to run away and have an adventure.

katkitya · 03/01/2012 22:14

It's a great place for a holiday. I think it would be quite daunting for youngsters though.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 03/01/2012 22:20

katK i was looking at the place by the sea? Agadhir? (sp). I think Marrakesh
would be too much for me.

When i was in Pakistan/India with dh, i battered everyone UP in the markets.his family asked if i was the full ticket Blush.

katkitya · 03/01/2012 22:29

I know people who loved Agadir, it's geared up for tourist and not bad value. I think you either love Marrakesh or you don't. Some tour companies do have all inclusive hotels near Marrakesh and I've only heard good things but, there's no beach. Depends what you want.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 03/01/2012 22:34

I'd love to go to Marrakesh, not with my dd 4, maybe in few years, the mates or H.

LadyHarrietDeSpook · 04/01/2012 11:25

I was just thinking about this film/book and wanting to see it again. Guess I've missed it...is it on repeat???

BooMagoo · 04/01/2012 20:21

It's on iplayer.
She reminds me of my sister. Self-absorbed cow. Not many children would cope as well as hers apparently did. My sister's are being taken into care.

Animation · 04/01/2012 20:31

My experience of Morocco on holiday two years ago was NOT good.

A male dominated place where women stay at home and are not even allowed cleaning jobs in the hotel. Could not walk about comfortably without covering up arms with a cardigan even though very hot. My kids felt VERY uncomfortable and threatened and stared at.

That was my reality. It's not a place for kids.

I would not go back.

NotnOtter · 04/01/2012 20:45

love the film but have a deep distaste for Kate's character in it
was shocked to google that both girls now adults!

Animation · 04/01/2012 20:49

"have a deep distaste for Kate's character in it"

Me too. Confused

NotnOtter · 04/01/2012 20:52

I really love the film but - maybe because I normally like kate - or maybe because she is such a good actress in the film - I have felt slightly 'haunted' over the last few days by the character

'I am your Mummy' (shudder)

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 04/01/2012 22:33

I will be taking DS to morocco for a year in 2014 if all goes to plan :) DH is Moroccan though so all a bit easier.

A male dominated place where women stay at home and are not even allowed cleaning jobs in the hotel.

I have been to morocco about 20 times and I would strongly disagree with this. Many Moroccan women work. My SIL manages a hotel in fez Confused

katkitya · 04/01/2012 23:25

I loved Marrakesh. The old town is traditional but there are plenty of women working in the pharmacies and the riads. I never saw any in the bars but plenty in the restaurants. Everyone is so good looking! I wouldn't take children into the old town, the motorbikes on the pavements are enough to put me off that idea!

Ponders · 04/01/2012 23:38

Fairuza Balk was Mildred in the TV film of the Worst Witch with Diana Rigg & Tim Curry

She was gorgeous Smile

"I have been to morocco about 20 times and I would strongly disagree with this. Many Moroccan women work. My SIL manages a hotel in fez"

Good to here!

Well I've only been once - but my romanticised idea what I thought it would be like was jolted a bit.

Men do seem very much the superiors and I never saw any woman in the cafes for instance. The women do apparently come out briefly late afternoon apparently.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/01/2012 11:44

Yes life is different and far more segregated. It can be uncomfortable if you aren't used to it. You see more segregation in the old parts though, the more modern, and less touristy parts are more easy going. My younger SILs have lots of friends, male and female, and they socialise in cafes, restaurants and at each others' houses. Moroccan women (who don't work outside the home) tend to work very hard all morning, making the house sparkling and cooking a fan meal, then they spend the afternoons visiting or relaxing at home, napping, watching tv, playing with their kids. It is quite a nice life and they have lots of friends. Many many women also work outside the home, sharing childcare with relatives. My mil is an occasional chef at the royal palace, my DH's great aunt is a hotel housekeeper, SIL works in a shoe shop. It is cometely normal.
It is different no doubt, but not necessarily oppressive.

CuriousMama · 05/01/2012 16:15

Well I got the book today so will be absorbed in it tonight no doubt? Dp's at work and dss are old enough to entertain themselves.

I'd love to go to Morocco, love the food, decor etc.. but my friend who goes said it's not that clean? Dss are older, 11 and 14 so am sure they'd cope ok? I'd just need to find somewhere where we'd feel safe.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/01/2012 16:33

The whole country isn't clean???

It is a very safe and family friendly country on the whole. It is as clean as anywhere, sanitation and refuse collection may not be exactly as they are here but it is a clean country on the whole. Homes and businesses ate usually scrupulously clean.

CuriousMama · 05/01/2012 17:05

No not the whole country just where she went, was a town. She said they couldn't shower properly? Am glad to hear she's wrong though Smile Have no experience of the place myself.

OP posts:
katkitya · 05/01/2012 17:44

It's not a rich country but the sanitation is not a problem. Even in old Marrakech the rubbish gets cleared away every single day. I think teenagers would love it but I would stay in a resort hotel in the mountains and do lots of trips.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/01/2012 19:05

Cheap as chips backpacker hotels might have limited hot water but anywhere slightly more (£20 per night upwards) will have decent facilities.

CuriousMama · 05/01/2012 19:27

Cheers for that. Really want to go now and I know dss would love it. I think she may have stayed with a family?

OP posts:
katkitya · 05/01/2012 19:51

Oh, you can stay in a fab road for £30 a night but, doing that you only need three nights there. If you go through Thomsons or someone you could stay in a 4/5 star all

Animation · 05/01/2012 19:53

"I think teenagers would love it"

I have 2 teenage and they didn't enjoy it - felt leered at and were pesterd as they walked through town, and no way would they swim in the sea wearing a swimsuit. The women went into the sea fully clothed and wearing head scalves.

They did enjoy the day trip to Marrakech, though very hot - 42 degrees.

Still believe it's not a place for young children.
