TV box sets - are there any I have missed?

TV is crap. Currently existing on box sets of Dexter and the L word (an interesting combination Hmm )

Are there any new series that I should be watching, any that I have missed? I can't have worked my way through all of the decent box sets, can I?

I have seen all of these:
ER
West Wing
The Good Wife
Six Feet Under
Dexter
L Word
House
Battlestar Gallactica
Stargate (SG-1, Atlantis and Universe)
Buffy
Angel

I have The Wire waiting for me on my Love Film list.. seems to be the last of the big series.

(I clearly have far too much time on my hands... there are others but can't recall them at the moment)

The Sopranos - I didn't think I'd like it, but it's weirdly addictive.
Criminal Minds - currently I'm on Season 6 and love it.

Have you seen Spaced? Not particularly long, but v funny. Total opposite to first two suggestions.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 10/11/2011 11:33

Can someone PM me and tell me the ending to Lost? Couldn't wade through it all but would quite like to know how it finally ended Wink

Big bang theory
Brothers and sisters
House of Elliott - a classic!
Presume you have also seen the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, surely everyone has right?
Scrubs
Sex and the City
Columbo - another classic!

peanutbuttercupcake · 10/11/2011 11:45

jareth I would but after all that viewing, I didn't really get it Blush

FaithfullBorderBinLiner · 10/11/2011 11:50

Loved BSG, we used to divide them into catagories - establishing plot, filling in time and unbelievably great drama echoing politics, war, current affairs, religon in a Scifi universe.

Have n't found anything similar Sad

JarethTheGoblinKing · 10/11/2011 12:00

Pride & Prejudice, nah.. not seen it Grin
(not my thing really, don't think I'd like Downton Abbey either. Am I going to get banned from MN for saying that Wink )

I would definitely recommend Prison Break. I wasn't sure I'd like it but it was awesome

MissPenteuth · 10/11/2011 12:10

Castle might seem slightly schlocky and predictable at first, but I'd recommend sticking with it. It's a guilty pleasure for me, but then I'd watch anything with Nathan Fillion in it.

I haven't seen P&P either. Does that make me a MN pariah of some sort?

thesurgeonsmate · 10/11/2011 12:28

If we're down as far as Castle in the pecking order, I'd also mention White Collar.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 10/11/2011 12:29

Lawks.. I've just looked up Carnivale. What's it like? Confused

OP posts:
thesurgeonsmate · 10/11/2011 12:34

I though Carnivale was very dull, have to say. Slow moving and a bit opaque.

thesurgeonsmate · 10/11/2011 12:36

Gone back over the thread so far, no mention of The Shield?

Also thought of one we really thought was good but only lasted one season - Boomtown, a cop thing where they showed the crime from several different people's points of view.

Rome?

notyummy · 10/11/2011 12:56

I remember Boomtown - one of the Wahlbergs in it? Was good.

I liked the Shield - and my mum was a HUGE fan. For a 73 year old lady she likes cool tv! She also loved The Wire, BSG, The Killing - and loves a bit of sex and gore (True Blood - and Misfits!) Hope I am as open minded when I am her age.

NaughtyBusterAndTheBumFactory · 10/11/2011 13:01

I used to like Nip/Tuck and rather fancied Dr Christian. It went completely mental and a little bit dark and scary though. Not why I stopped watching, just because I don't know when it is on!

goodasgold · 10/11/2011 13:04

Sleeper Cell
Brotherhood

FrogGreen · 10/11/2011 13:21

Just watching House of Cards - like a very 80's dark dry BBC West Wing, it's very clever

Spoutlet · 10/11/2011 13:36

You absolutely have to add Fringe to your list!

FaithfullBorderBinLiner · 10/11/2011 13:43

Carnivale - I watched it a few years ago so here's what's stuck in my mind.

I thought that the time and location made a very interesting backdrop. It's the other side of the American dream, 1930s mid west during the depression. The colours used in the photography reflect this, everything is dull, beige brown. Even when the Carnivale come's into town, it looks like it's been travelling, it's not a technicolor splash.

The only entertainment in peoples lives is the arrival of the once in a while Carnivale and the ever present Religon, but of the two who is the real showman, who's the bully? Some of the 'magic' does n't quite work.

The characters are well drawn and are human, little bits of good and bad in most of them. it's not an amazing series but it is good, thought provoking and different. I'm glad they made it and that I watched it.

Watch a couple see what you think, it makes a change from the endless modern day city cop/crime detective stuff available. I tend to have a mix of stuff on the go so this would fit into the Deadwood, Coen brothers, Game of Thrones niche. Certainly watch Deadwood before this although be warned you'll be be talking like a Shakespearean, foul mouthed frontiersman.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 10/11/2011 14:14

Well, my Love Film list is looking a lot healthier, though there seems to be a long wait for many of these Hmm

I've just remembered a whole load of crappy sci-fi series series that I can't remember the name of.. maximum of 2 series, always involving aliens that look like us.. V was one of them. Hmm.

BeeBread · 10/11/2011 16:18

Firefly is a very good, one-season, Sci-Fi series. Very well rounded.

TheGhostOfMrsWembley · 10/11/2011 19:02

Can I add Farscape if intelligent/funny sci-fi is your bag? Oh, and don't forget The X Files, though I'd ignore the last series/episode if you don't want to leave with an odd taste in your mouth...

Sharpe and Hornblower are an excellent way of teaching the DCs about the damned Frenchies Napoleonic Wars.

TheGhostOfMrsWembley · 10/11/2011 19:03

Oh, and Babylon Five - one of my all time favourites.Grin

Sharney · 10/11/2011 19:13

Firefly - brilliant,
Charmed -dodgy as all get out but fun,
Kath&Kim -Aussie comedy series, hilarious,
The Games -also Aussie, satire on the 2000 Sydney games, very clever.
And lots of what has all ready been stated.

FaithfullBorderBinLiner · 10/11/2011 22:15

The Slap - just stated watching this modern Australia/Greek drama

Jarth your Love film list may be bulging and hometaping maybe be ruining music but there is loads out there online....
