Seriously not getting what is so shocking? One or two mouthy kids the rest friendly and attentive.

The mouthy kids are shocking. The teachers acting as social workers/surrogate parents are shocking (Mr Drew's little polemic about how these children have never heard "no" particularly so).

Renaldo - do you have teenagers? Wink They ALL have phones! You'd be hard pushed to find a secondary school without them, dispite what the school rules are!

I was at secondary comp in the '80's and this school seems similar except the teaching looks more interesting.

I'm not a teacher but it seems fine. You will always get disruptive pupils but on the whole the kids seem fine.

They are focusing on the worst kids.

Report
SlackSally · 22/09/2011 21:36

But the mouthy kids are a tiny minority and the teachers are only acting like that towards them. The others, they're just teaching.

Yeah, the deputy head is in charge of discipline so naturally he will see the naughty ones.

That bloke is playing to the cameras. 'Discussed in the houses of parliament'?? There is no way he could maintain that over elaborate explanation of why he is confiscating pupils' coats to every pupil.

Thought it would be much more shocking tbh. Most children conforming, smart as well.

It's a state school, so only to be expected really Wink Grin

Must admit if it is real then I'm pretty shocked. The answering back, arguing and over-familiarity is extraordinary. The bizarre obsession with uniform codes is at complete odds with the rest of the behaviour.

Did I hear correctly? He only teaches 2 hours a week... If he really is an excellent teacher as seems to be being implied then it's duh a shame he's not teaching more!

Report
SlackSally · 22/09/2011 21:41

Agree, Captain. You could tell he thinks so too. Which is why he told his class how much he likes teaching them.

Malinois - what specifically do you mean by over-familiarity?

It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am still loving Mr Drew and as a team of teachers they seem to get on really well.

auntpetunia · 22/09/2011 21:44

this seems to be a normal secondary school.. the kids in this episode are just happening to be the bad ones am sure the next series will show other kids.

SS using first names, having friendly little chats. What happened to discipline and boundaries and, frankly, fear?

We had a very relaxed 6th form, no uniform and first name terms with teachers, but then we were expected to behave like adults at that age.

How can this incident be allowed to be shown on TV though? Don't understand.

Don't blame him doing that but I'm amazed this can be shown on TV.

The Head Teacher has absolutely no sense of authority though don't you think?

Report
southeastastra · 22/09/2011 21:50

i think being overly friendly does more harm than good too

the teachers seem so wooly, even our liberal 70s teachers had more command and respect that these so far

no wonder kids run riot

Georgimama what incident... Nothing happened

Just surprised they can show a 14 year old making that accusation and being shown to be a liar.

The teachers do seem quite wooly.
