Who's in? I'm really interested to see what's different in America.

OP posts:

MousyMouse, I had one midwife who didn't talk to me and who took blood from me without telling me what she was doing. It was infuriating!

mousymouse · 16/06/2011 21:53

but I would slap dh if he were to moan with me :o

jenrendo · 16/06/2011 21:53

18 hours? Pah....

VeryHungryKatypillar · 16/06/2011 21:54

Could be totally wrong here, but did I read somewhere that in some states a homebirth can lead to criminal charges being brought against the mother?

SingOut · 16/06/2011 21:54

'This is precious cargo and we wanna make sure that...' we don't get sued? Hmm

reddaisy · 16/06/2011 21:55

The dad is nice though, supporting her. What are they recommending?

WidowWadman · 16/06/2011 21:55

"'This is precious cargo and we wanna make sure that...' we don't get sued?"

Well, I guess even without a lawsuit, delivering a dead or damaged baby puts kind of a dampener on the mood.

VeryHungryKatypillar · 16/06/2011 21:56

Wikipedia tells me I'm wrong... but I think it is the attending midwife who can get into trouble in some states rather than the mother. Def read something recently but can't remember where...

reddaisy · 16/06/2011 21:56

23 hours of labour? I was at home for longer than that in labour, our hospital would have sent me home rather than forcing drugs on me!

reddaisy · 16/06/2011 21:57

That was the only birth that made me smile. Good for them.

captainbarnacle · 16/06/2011 21:57

'delivered, their way.'

Their way?!?

jenrendo · 16/06/2011 21:58

Me too reddaisy. Ah well, thanks for your company ladies. DH away tonight. Sleep tight x

SingOut · 16/06/2011 21:58

I smiled too. And maybe just cried a bit :)

missismac · 16/06/2011 21:58

reddaisy I think in some states a homebirth is illegal now - partly because it's been made impossible for midwives to get insurance to attend births outside of medical units.

HackedOffAndHaressed · 16/06/2011 21:59

My god, my birth with a bit of paracetamol is a million miles from these births, they ALL have an epidural. God knows what they would have thought of me.

Is is just that because it is private healthcare the hospital get to bill the insurance companies for every bit of medication they give so they want to give as much as possible?

Jojay · 16/06/2011 22:00

Hurray for Susan!

reddaisy · 16/06/2011 22:02

It must be easier for the staff this way, no loud screaming. Now the programme I want to see is an American midwife coming over to the UK to do a job swap! I would switch on for that!

AllTheYoungDoods · 16/06/2011 22:04

I posted a link by a feminist midwife on the 'maternity on tv' thread. Can't link from phone but worth a read.

I read Naomi Wolf's Misconceptions over 10 years ago which anaylsed the USA birth experience. I thought it was exaggerated: sadly not it would seem.

midori1999 · 16/06/2011 22:05

From what I understand homebirth is illegal in some states in America. (from American ladies on another forum I use)

I found this really hard to watch, so much intervention and Shock at a 90% epidural rate. I wonder what the c-section rate is?

I do wonder how much finances are involved in the provision of drugs etc during labour as obviously the more medical intervention, the more money is made. Sad

captainbarnacle · 16/06/2011 22:06

Yes! (mid)Wife swap! Got to be done.

reddaisy · 16/06/2011 22:08

CaptainBarnacle - let's get mumsnet to delete our last posts and we can pitch our idea to Channel4 before some producer steals it off us. I am also only half joking!

twinklingfairy · 16/06/2011 22:12

oh I wish I had been following with you guys cos I was getting so cross with it all too.
Epidurals all round then. And the shock when she said no Shock

I wondered at that too. Lets just shove all these drugs into you, who cares if we shoot it into the babies bloodstream too, just keep it down will ya!

But ok, chanting oooopeeeen. Was a touch odd to me.

Though, in my head I did find myself envisaging a flower opening (it was a touch random, even as I thought it I followed it with , you weirdo Wink), but I kept that thought to myself. I did not chant it loudly.

twinklingfairy · 16/06/2011 22:14

midwife swap. God yeah but it would be a real shame for the british ones who would want to scream with frustration!!

BertieBotts · 16/06/2011 22:19

Oops sorry. Yes I don't have freeview, I was meaning that I was hoping it would be on C4 but guessing it would be on freeview. If that makes sense.

nailak · 16/06/2011 22:19

midwife swap sounds ood, why did they ive pet when she was 8cm, 23 hrs is not abnormal?
