because now everything else is a bit shit.

the killing was almost good until the last couple of episodes.

chicago code is as formulaic as they come.

the shield is very good.

i watched the kenneth branagh wallander, that was just a little bit lacking.

there must be more good crime drama.

don't say csi....

LOVE breaking bad.

Whitershadeofpale · 16/06/2011 15:44

I have to go with Six Feet Under too. Nothing has impacted on me in the same way. The last episode left me physically drained.

I do enjoy Big Love as well and I've heard very good things about Carnival. Generally I think with american TV if it's HBO it's usually worth watching.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/06/2011 15:53

We are so lucky - we have just finished watching series 2 of the Wire - 3 more to go Grin We are loving it - not needed subtitles at all but you have to really concentrate as the plot is so complex.

I loved series 2 - really got attached to Frank Sebotka and thought the Ziggy storyline when he broke down was amazing.

It's so bloody good.

lambethlil · 16/06/2011 16:19

Oh you lucky ones still half way through The Wire.Envy

The Brotherhood is good, very good in fact. Some similarities to thebestseriesever.

stainesmassif · 16/06/2011 20:18

wire virgins. pah. can i suggest you just watch one episode per month or something, otherwise you'll be channel hopping til you retire.

the brotherhood? DH!

DH!

What does that mean? The Brotherhood really is very good- I wasn't at all sure having got it as a Wire substitute, but now am hooked.

stainesmassif · 19/06/2011 14:34

haha, 'DH' was me calling upstairs to get him to start downloading!!

Game of Thrones is my current fave, even if it is a bit fantasy. Tommy the mayor from The Wire is in it.

Chicago Code is OK (nowhere near as formulaic as Blue Bloods where they all sit round for Sunday dinner at the end). It has been cancelled by Fox though.

Liked the Terminator TV series and Jericho but they were also cancelled and we were left hanging.

The Walking Dead and Dexter are good.

Damages seemed good but I only caught a few episodes.

Never seen The Sopranos Shock

moragbellingham · 19/06/2011 18:07

I thought Chicago Code would be good as it was from the makers of The Shield but not really - that's a good second best to the Wire if you can get hold of it.

DilysPrice · 19/06/2011 18:23

Fellow Idris Elba fans should track down a copy of Ultraviolet - NB the C4 vampire/cop show with Jack Davenport, not the dreadful Milla Jovivich film. He was just excellent in it as a cynical Falklands veteran turned vampire slayer, hard as nails but with a softer side.

The problem is that there were only ever 6 episodes filmed and you'll be gutted when it's over.

stainesmassif · 19/06/2011 18:49

yy, i loved the walking dead, am a sucker for a zombie story, though i have no zombie plan myself.

Does no one like Burn Notice, or is that a bit fluffy for this thread?

stainesmassif · 20/06/2011 11:40

Is that the one with Dennis Leary?

OP posts:
GothAnneGeddes · 20/06/2011 19:59

No it's the one about a blacklisted spy, with Jeffery Donaldson. It is probably considerably frothier then the shows people are naming here, but a lot more entertaining.

fedupofnamechanging · 20/06/2011 21:07

Dilys, you are right about ultraviolet. Loved that series and really wish more had been made

stainesmassif · 21/06/2011 01:48

Goth - I have absolutely nothing against being entertained! In the old days, pre dc, I quite liked having a hangover and watching a whole morning of charmed. Those days are behind me now.... However, burn notice looks worth a try.

Not got round to The Wire... bloody love a good crime drama so can't wait!!

Enjoyed early 24 and, although not crime, Sopranos, West Wing, Arrested Development and, recently, Modern Family.

Dad bought the Mad Men box set for Christmas so have that lined up next (have a young baby so not cracking through em like we used to!)

PainteditRed · 22/06/2011 01:55

Nobody has mentioned it, and it's nowhere near same league as The Wire, Sopranos etc but I really enjoyed Nip/Tuck

poisondwarf · 24/06/2011 01:26

staines am stumbling around MN pissed. First time out of PN for laaaaang time - go easy, the stitches still hurt. Feeling mighty offended - you abandon Dec 08 to go and watch TELLEH? Come in and say hello some time - we need livening up. Yes and watch Spiral. It's fookin brilliant. So brilliant that I ordered series 1 & 2 on DVD but now can't bring myself to watch series 2 cos then I'll have no more to watch and my life will once again be a yawning chasm of disappointment and cack. Y'get me, staines?

GothAnneGeddes · 24/06/2011 10:35

Painted - Nip/Tuck used to be very good, but then it just got repetitive. Christian sees the light! Then he's back to his womanising ways, and repeat.

It also got really dark with the whole boob job for the son in prison bit, but then the son was always a really, really creepy character.

EudoraW · 24/06/2011 10:51

I love The Wire too, but I have to say I gave in to my DH's demands and watched ALL of The Sopranos after he said it was better. Begrudgingly i totally agree now. Much more emotional layers going on than in The Wire and less formulaic stuff. Plus it's the only time I've found a fat man who closely resembles a walrus attractive... Weird! Oh, and love Treme BTW it's a slow slow burner but just think it's beautiful!

EudoraW · 24/06/2011 10:52

oh! and Breaking Bad! Especially the first season.

vjg13 · 24/06/2011 12:22

Wire fans should also try Oz. It's a prison drama, hard to watch at times but filled my post Wire vacuum well! Also watching Deadwood season 3 at the moemnt and finding it good.

vjg13 · 24/06/2011 12:29

EudraW I keep putting off watching Sopranos as my husband has already watched it. Will get round to it in the end but really don't like mafia type things.

EudoraW · 24/06/2011 15:27

vjg13 Yeah I'm the same (in fact in both instances!), but though it is mafia based (esp. for the first 2 seasons) there is a lot more to it than that. The aspects of family life and the kids growing up are really interesting and absorbing. I also love Arrested Development for a laugh! Or The Larry Sanders Show!
