because now everything else is a bit shit.

the killing was almost good until the last couple of episodes.

chicago code is as formulaic as they come.

the shield is very good.

i watched the kenneth branagh wallander, that was just a little bit lacking.

there must be more good crime drama.

don't say csi....

Yep. Blue Bloods is the Tom Selleck one. His eyebrows and moustache are dyed so badly he looks like he's wearing a Groucho Marx disguise when he puts his glasses on.

They started off with a plotline about corruption with his youngest son secretly investigating the murder of his eldest son.

But they've dropped that in favour of stories where the uglier Wahlberg brother acts hard by frowning and walloping perps every week.

The most compelling thing about it is waiting for the granddad's bad false teeth to plop into his wine at the obligatory family dinners.

Yes, Jamie Murray was rubbish in Dexter and everything else she's been in.

stainesmassif · 07/06/2011 17:40

So Jamie Murray is actually English! Well I never.

'Damages.' Really good plot and great performance from Glenn Close.

stainesmassif · 09/06/2011 19:02

she's vv good in the shield.

Hmm, I am on episode 6 of the first series of the wire, and tbh I'm not loving it. I find the accents hard to follow, can't keep track of the characters and generally am wondering if I'm missing something here?maybe the next series is better? I do enjoy some of it, the clever set pieces, but on the whole finding it hard to get into.

stainesmassif · 09/06/2011 21:31

Yy, it took me a while to get into, but it is EPIC. persevere, you'll be glad you did. Or you won't cause nothing will ever be worth watching again.....

The Wire is my all time favourite but also loved The Sopranos. Generation Kill is fantastic, as is Deadwood.

limitedperiodonly · 09/06/2011 23:26

Subtitles elliott, subtitles. You have to make it to the fourth series which is sublime.

pomme I forgot about Damages

TanteRose · 10/06/2011 03:28

no one's mentioned Six Feet Under Shock

there IS no finer television than SFU...fact.

myproblemblob · 10/06/2011 09:46

Oh yes I think the 4th series is the best.. the kids are amazing actors.. I love the wire it is by far the best show I have seen. I have just watched it for the 2nd time and it gets better..The story about Randy! I wont say anymore... but you know

Think I will rewatch lost next. I know alot of people hated the ending but I really liked it . There were some odd bits but as a series it was amazing

limitedperiodonly · 10/06/2011 11:40

I'm watching Six Feet Under for the first time - brilliant. And Big Love and Battlestar Galactica, which I really didn't think I'd like because I thought it would be like Space 1999 (time for me to show my age Blush).

GooGooMuck · 10/06/2011 11:43

I've only just started series 3 of The Wire.

My future stands ahead of me like a golden road [smug]

elliott · 11/06/2011 09:35

How do you get subtitles on the DVD? (thicko emoticon)
actually last ep was getting more into it- but omg, do I really have to plough through 2 more series before it gets great? Can I just, skip over to series4 or will I be even more bewildered?!!

CakeandRoses · 11/06/2011 09:44

you have to force your dh to watch the sopranos. overall its nearly as good as The Wire and in some ways better (it's made by HBO too as you probably know).

stainesmassif · 11/06/2011 09:45

No, no, no, cause in retrospect the first two series will be even greater!

Dunno re subtitles, my remote's got a 'subtitle' button. Good luck!

OP posts:
stainesmassif · 11/06/2011 10:15

I think dh is prejudiced against any form of navel gazing - hence we won't be watching 'in treatment' together either. Does anyone remember a similar show on bbc2 with Paul whitehouse? That was good.

limitedperiodonly · 11/06/2011 11:41

No elliott you must it all, in order. It's worth it.

Some people don't care for season 2, but I find it noble and tragic with its theme of doomed dock workers struggling against looming unemployment. Plus, you don't need the subtitles as much Grin

Season 3 is a shocker. Season 4 is my favourite and I still liked season 5 even though some people say it's a bit implausible.

chickieno1 · 11/06/2011 19:54

I've watched the wire twice now and it really is sooooo addictive! It took a while for dh to get into it though.

Also watched sopranos recently, some seasons better than others. AJ and Meadow were very annoying though.

Damages is pretty good.......

Trying to watch in treatment at the moment but can't get into it

stainesmassif · 12/06/2011 17:43

We're watching the shield again now. Dh is in love with it or something. I'm always surprised that it doesn't get as much kudos as the other shows mentioned here though, I do think it's very good. I bet this kills the thread!!

Ahhhhh...those heady days of perving on Mcnulty!!!!! I'm with you on the wire - it was absolutely BRILLIANT wasn't it.

I liked season 1 of Dexter (I don't think that awful English actress had shown up at that point) but all the other seasons are terrible IMO. Give season one a go.

I loved most of West Wing - like someone said, you have to get over the initial cheese. It's not crime but it is intelligently written and the characters and plot are great. Liberal soft porn?

The Sopranos is a pretty amazing tv epic too - flags in spots (like all of them seem to) but has some memorable moments.

Red Riding trilogy for film4 (channel 4) is a really good bit of gritty UK crime.

bbc's Shadow line seems to be shaping up pretty well

Spiral - I've watched season one and season three - not nearly as good as the wire but still better than most

Deadwood - I loved it but my DH didn't, found it too poetic in language.

Mad men - not crime but good fun and great costumes and set design.

PRIME SUSPECT
These are old but the are all really, really good and Helen Mirren is great. They are no nonsense crime drama, a bit slow but well written.

Don't you wish you had never watched THE WIRE so you could start all over again!

marthamay · 13/06/2011 13:49

Oh yes, can I add:

TWIN PEAKS!!!!! Of course it's completely different from the wire but the first season at least (can't quite remember how many there are) is really good and full of suspense. It can be quite surreal. I think the ending was a bit blah.....

Six Feet Under - not crime but great drama. I loved this

Breaking Bad - miserable but quite good. A bit rough and raw.

midnightexpress · 13/06/2011 13:57

Oh oh oh Omar. Life just isn't the same post-Omar.

I'm currently contemplating starting all over again.

Meanwhile, big thumbs up to Deadwood. It's great. Also try the Swedish Wallander, which is much better than the KB one IMO. Especially the older ones with Linda in. I thought Boardwalk Empire was over-rated, and I also gave up on Breaking Bad - DP loved it, but I found it a bit repetitive.

GooGooGadget · 13/06/2011 14:10

I had a dream I was in tight with Omar. It was a good dream. Grin

stainesmassif · 13/06/2011 21:12

Omar callin'. Very cool! Have also asked dh to get on the breaking bad case. Watched 2 series of dexter. I thought the female characters were soooo badly written. Sister -pita. Gf -domestic goddess in need of protection. Zzzzzzzzz.
