DH and I are running out of things to watch - please suggest some more box sets for us!

DH and I have been watching series on box set rather than TV for ages now and are fast running out. So far we have watched:-

Cold Feet
Friends
Sex and the City
24
House
Lost (I liked this and DH tolerated it)
Dexter

Can you suggest anything else we might like?

Entourage (especially for all the celeb cameos)
Prison break
Frasier
The OC (bit tacky but first couple of series good)
True blood
Californication

lieseylou · 18/05/2011 19:25

Alias! Best series we have ever watched! And definately west wing.

going · 18/05/2011 19:25

Seinfeld

our friends in the north

prison break

fustyarse · 18/05/2011 19:39

Curb Your Enthusiasm - genius. Esp the doll's head episode
Seinfeld
Criminal Minds - totally underrated in the UK
Medium - ditto
Fringe - ditto

Brasso4 · 18/05/2011 22:03

Entourage - we can watch a whole series in a night!

lauraloo09 · 19/05/2011 20:30

Recommend 30 Rock, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, IT Crowd

notyummy · 19/05/2011 21:49

Battlestar Galactica (an allegory on the war on terror.....NOT just a sci fi series!)

The Wire.

West Wing.

ER

Frasier

Walking Dead

Sons of Anarchy

Misfits

Being Human

Crimson Petal and the White (not sure if that is on DVD yet.)

MyBalletShoes · 19/05/2011 21:57

Bones? Bit daft at times but it's all about the escapism!

PandaEis · 19/05/2011 22:02

Greys anatomy
Supernatural
Criminal minds
Sopranos
True blood
Private practice

They are my faves also the ones you have mentionedGrin i wish my DH would watch what i like instead of watching that irritating prat, robson green extreme fishing...

maighdlin · 19/05/2011 22:35

I'm currently re-re-re-re-re watching nip/tuck. my favourite drama. goes a bit mad at the end but an excellent show.

muchthesame · 19/05/2011 22:38

Supernatural

Vintagepommery · 20/05/2011 09:14

Black Books and Flight of the Conchords

IloveJudgeJudy · 20/05/2011 15:24

The Wire - DH and I had to have the subtitles on for the first episode as we couldn't understand the slang (DS, of course, understood it - listens to rap). Fantastic serial.

What Crimson Petal about?

BPisme · 20/05/2011 15:34

Some great ideas on this thread - I shall illegally download buy some of them straight away!

Actually, does lovefilm do tv dvds?

In recent years, we have enjoyed:
True blood
30 rock
Rome
I, claudius
Life after people
Glee (although only I liked that!)
Battlestar Galatica (that one was DH)
The Wire (DH again)
The thick of it
Seinfeld
Dr Who, both oldies and new ones

We actually hardly ever watch things when they are "on" now. Much better to binge :o

i'm planning to get Outnumbered next time I see it for cheap in CEX or somewhere - we tend to download/on demand a couple of episodes to see if we like them, then buy the boxset when we next see it cheap - it is actually cheaper to buy a boxset from CEX then sell it back than to rent it, and you don't need to worry about it being late back.

Lovefilm is ace for single dvds though, and you can stream films as well.

TBH I doubt very much we get our moneys worth out of our tv licence, even though we only watch/listen to BBC channels. We get maybe two hours a week of cbeebies and an hour of BBC news, and then maybe five hours of radio four. Not that we are doing useful stuff at other times, mind...

BPisme · 20/05/2011 15:35

I love the idea of the rap-loving DS sitting down with his parents to watch the wire, and the parents putting the subtitles on to understand the slang :o

Saying that, maybe I should try that - when DH has tried to make me watch the wire I haven't understood a word of it.

BPisme · 20/05/2011 15:38

OOOH, Deadliest warrior!!!

The single most ridiculous program ever made. Not even sure it broadcast in the UK, but if you can, watch it.

Basically they get two historical warriors, and use really shaky science and maths (and a lot of hitting watermelons with swords) to decide who would win in a fight. Utterly bonkers, and takes itself so seriously.

Also the commentator has a really daft accent, which just adds to the hilarity.

Ciske · 20/05/2011 15:43

Deadwood
Carnivale (Bit of a mysterious, Twin Peaks like feel to it, and set in the 'Dustbowl' America. Wonderful filming)
The Sopranos
The Wire (which I found too dark and negative at times, but DP loved it)

mateysmum · 20/05/2011 15:47

Another vote for Mad Men, but again, watch several episodes to really understand what's going on.
If you want a change from those American dramas, try some light relief with series like Doc Martin or Dad's Army or some old classic Beeb drama like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - 30yrs old but still a masterpiece, Brideshead Revisited, Jewel in the Crown etc.
Newer stuff if you didn't watch it on TV - The Office, Gavin & Stacey.

Quenelle · 20/05/2011 15:49

The Sopranos - we're currently rewatching season 2

Frasier - never, ever gets tired. And there are 11 seasons to enjoy

The Wire - only saw season 1 because DH didn't like it. Very hard to tune into, I couldn't understand a word they said at first, but very involving.

nicecupatea · 22/05/2011 02:01

Hung - comedy/drama about a teacher turned male prostitute.
The Event - Lost-type action series about undercover aliens living on earth.

I second the recommendations for Deadwood, Big Love, Mad Men, Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, all great.

Most of these are made by HBO, you cant go wrong with their stuff IMO.

spilttheteaagain · 22/05/2011 08:04

Yes Minister

Coupling

Blackadder

PfftTheMagicDragon · 22/05/2011 08:54

My favorite shows from the last few years:

DRAMA
Mad Men
The Wire
Breaking Bad - very good
The Good Wife
Fringe - well, this is sci-fi actually, but with a dramatic edge
Big Love (though later seasons got boggy, and it's finished now)
The Walking Dead - very flawed first season, but great potential.
The Crimson Petal and the White

COMEDY
30 Rock
Whites
Psychoville

Plus of course, there's all the old ones, and all the ones that I have forgotten.

I'd start with Mad Men - though there's no new ones for another year at least.

atswimtwolengths · 22/05/2011 12:39

Another one recommending The Killing. You won't find anything better than that.

Another great boxed set would be In Treatment - Gabriel Byrne (always worth a viewing!) is a psychotherapist. Originally it was played nightly on American tv so you saw one person on a Monday, another on a Tuesday etc. On Friday he sees his own psychotherapist.

Season 1 is absolutely fantastic. It takes a couple of 'weeks' to get really into it as you have to get to know new characters each night, but once you're used to them, you will be absolutely hooked.

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 22/05/2011 20:54

Entourage

Studio 60

Rome

Band of Brothers
