Jesus, I have never seen a human being so utterly vile in all my life!Shock I am usually sympathetic to anyone with possible mental health issues but apparently he hasn't. Staging repeated dirty protests was beyond grim, the look of him was freakish and him shouting 'fuck off' to everyone was laughable, even the judge FGS!!! I notice he now has a huge following on FB! Grin

I would think he has a borderline personality disorder.

You could see the sheer frustration of the people surrounding him

Unsure of the realistic housing that could be in place for him tbh but it certainly isn't prison.

Thingumy · 17/05/2011 14:09

and that facebook page is vile Hmm

I just think how sad. Really, think about it. He is so desperate to be in prison that he is living in his own excrememnt amd urine. How bad can life be on the outside to make anyone want to live like that?

He is acting out in these ways in order to stay in prison. he knows that if he assaults people or swears at the judge, or behaes badly in rison he will get to spend longer behind bars. he'll be sentenced for longer time siside, he won't get early release for good behaviour. He does it to get his own way - to stay inside prison.

What on earth could have happened in his past, and possibly his current outside life, to mean that life in a bare cell is so desireable?

At the end of the day, he is someone's son.

I don't thnk he as mental health issues particulalr.y Medical report suggets he doesn't.

But he is not right either.

He needs help. But I have no idea what the help should be. Prison is not the right place for him. But then neither is hospital either. But where?

Thingumy · 17/05/2011 14:22

I don't know hula

I thought maybe carer based sheltered accommodation but is he actually willing to live a 'normal' life ie attempt to wash, prepare his foods, shop and toilet himself? It's got to be a a damn site cheaper than housing him in a prison.

Is he just utterly lazy ? He certainly knows how to work the system so he gets what he wants, that is for sure-so there is some intelligence there.

He must have some form of personality disorder imo.

Hulababy · 17/05/2011 14:25

Dirty protests are not uncommon in prison. I was suprised at how many do it.

But then it did suggest that he also lives like that on the outside too. So no rental/hostel type place will keep him for long if that is the case.

My worry with someone like that is that he will eventually lose it completely, do a serious crime in order to spend a very lengthy time inside.

amberleaf · 17/05/2011 14:27

Good post Hulababy.

He may not have been diagnosed with a mental health problem, but as someone else said he really isnt right

I feel sorry for those who have to work with him but i feel sorrier for him.

What a miserable existence.

He cannot walk yet he is entirely capable of standing to trash his cell and piss everywhere.

Reminds me of the one in the wheelchair from Little Britain.

chosenone · 17/05/2011 14:42

Yes it is vile to laugh at people in this position but he is a drain on society, could you work with him. He chooses to to tell everyone around him to fuck off and chooses to be in Prison with his disgraceful and disgusting behaviour. He 'wants' to be in a hospital where I presume everything is done for him literally, everything. He also threatened to go straight out and attack someone so he could go back in, that is vile and frightening. But I agree there is no answer.

Hulababy · 17/05/2011 14:44

chosenone - I have worked in a prison. I have seen peole like this. Granted I never really had dealings with people in this state. But I did have tot alk to them at some point, even if only for them to refuse any support - and yes, often with the choice phasing.

Thingumy · 17/05/2011 14:56

well going by the facebook page-he should be put to sleep like a animal.

I'd show more preference to euthanise the animal who raped and stabbed his ex girlfriend to death.

SoloIsAHotCougar · 17/05/2011 14:57

He is not the only prisoner/human being that is like this. I've yet to see this program, but I've seen plenty of these types in real life and they are not nice. Vile is quite a mild description of some of them, believe me.

I think a big problem with the wider population is that they are actually very sheltered and this type of behaviour (as shown in Strangeways) is a huge shock to them and pity comes into play. These aren't nice people and regardless of them possibly having some kind of disorder, just remember that someone has to look after their health and well being, whether that is their family or medical staff (in or out of prison) or prison officers.

Solo -I know that many of these people are not nice people, and it is especially awful to be the ones who have to deal with them direct and their possessions/cells. I have seen it first hand in prison. Fortunately I wasn't the one who had to clean them up, but I have, on more than one occasion, being spoken to like that by such people.

It's not pity I feel so much as a sense of bewilderment. What to do with someone like this?

Hulababy · 17/05/2011 15:16

BTP = not sure the thread warrants deletion tbh. There is only one post - the OPs - that comments on people laughing at him. Most have shown some form of compassion and tried to look at factors behind such behaviour.

Hula, I'm a prison officer when I'm not on my career break. I've had my blood run cold dealing with some of these prisoners, they can be very frightening. I'm what they nickname a 'carebear' at my place because I go the extra mile to try and help them...sadly, some are beyond help and frankly, I'm not paid enough to be assaulted by these often very dangerous people, but as you say; 'What to do with someone like this?'

chosenone · 17/05/2011 15:52

I don't think this thread deserves deletion either. I wasn't laughing at him more the way he could only express himself by saying 'fuck off' to everyone. But I can not feel pity for someone who behaves like an animal and I think solo is right Im shocked by him more than anything else. I think the creation of a FB page shows many more are too.

It is hard to feel compassion for many people in a high security prison like Strangeways because they have committed crimes against society, they have hurt and harmed people. I agree the cold hearted rapist and murderer of his own child made my blood run cold too though.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 17/05/2011 15:56

I don't think that this person has commited serious crimes against people. I'm sure it said in the programme that he'd been arrested for public order offences. I kind of imagined that meant he'd been shouting abuse at people and the police had enough and nicked him.

I don't think he ought to be in prison but he does need help. Maybe being sectioned for a while and having some intensive psych input. They say he doesn't have mental health problems but its not normal to act like that even if they're saying its intentional. Maybe some intensive help might make him realise there are better ways of behaving. Who knows, maybe they've tried all this and it didn't work.

Very sad though that someone is in such a state.

minxofmancunia · 17/05/2011 15:58

the behaviour he exhibited is not uncommon, I would guess he has a personality disorder and it's as a result of being completely unsocialised as a child/adolescent. I expect he's also completely institutionalised. It's sad ture but so bloody frustrating when you have to work with people like this.

I've been subject to "dirty protests" when working as a nurse on a secure unit for adolescents, the worst was actually a girl with unsocialised conduct disorder. As she was under 16 we had to go into her seclusion room and repeatedly clean up the mess up to every half hour (she made herself sick too) with aprons, gloves, face masks on etc. It sounds awful but there really was very very little therapeutically we could do.

And apart from multi-systemic therapy which is resource intensive, long term and time consuming there is no evidence based treatment for young people with conduct disorder, it's pretty desperate really.

SoloIsAHotCougar · 17/05/2011 16:03

Most of this is because some 15 (not checked this timescale) years ago, a large number of psychiatric hospitals were closed down, so prisons end up full of people that are ill.

minxofmancunia · 17/05/2011 16:18

I think it was about then solo I qualified as a mental health nurse 12 years ago and all the big institutions in the north west were in decline most of them had maybe one or 2 wards left open.

Perpetuallypregnant · 17/05/2011 17:14

I used to work with him. About 8 years ago maybe? I had to do 100% checks on all his work as it was so bad, he was fired in the end.

He was very strange and had a bad odour about him... However, physically he seemed fine. He didnt talk like he does in the programme, he wasnt exactly articulate but certainly clearer. He wasnt abusive then either. We all kind of felt sorry for him and assumed he had some learning disability.

Got a shock when I saw him on tv, had to confirm with dh that it was the same person!

Hulababy · 17/05/2011 17:32

Solo - I have every respect for your job. It must be very scary being with them, esecially when kicking off. I was fortunately shiedled from a fair amount of that side.

If only there was an answer or solution for these people.
