She really isn't being very kindly portrayed in this series is she?

I am going to miss the series when it is over. I dont see why they cant continue on.

I heard the production company are making a series about the Borgias.

No, he really is! Just another nugget of useless information I know!

I was trying to think and the only other historian that might have caused issue was Carr? Is that who you were thinking of?

"haven't watched it all so hadn't realised they merged Margaret and Mary Tudor."

Did they? who was that ? can someone please explain?

Squitten · 21/02/2011 21:48

They merged Henry VIII's two sisters into one sister - Margaret in Series 1. The character (marriage to a foreign monarch, marriage to Brandon and early death) is Mary Tudor's story but they named her Margaret to avoid confusion with Henry's daughter.

Mary actually married the French king Louis XII rather than the Portuguese and certainly didn't kill him off! Smile They probably changed that to avoid confusion with the French King character in the show who was Francis I, Louis's son.

Margaret does not appear in the show but they slipped up this season by discussing the King of Scotland as Henry's nephew - he was Margaret's son and so couldn't be his nephew in the show

Yes - they amalgamated Margaret and Mary Tudor into one sister and kept the name as Margaret.
The character had elements of both sisters in her as well as some glaring inaccuracies.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post they married her to the King of Portugal - the character then, after being shown murdering the King of Portugal went on to marry Charles Brandon.

In reality Mary Tudor married Louis XII of France and Margaret Tudor married James IV of Scotland. It was Mary Tudor who then married Charles Brandon after returning to England following the death of Louis. As far as I am aware neither sister was ever implicated in the death of their husbands, although Margaret's granddaughter Mary Queen of Scots was alleged to have been involved in the death of her second husband Lord Darnley.

Showtime - the company behind The Tudors have stated that this decision was made to avoid confusion between Henry's sister Mary and his daughter by Katherine of Aragon also named Mary.

There have been many other historical inaccuracies as well such as Wolsey committing suicide (he died of illness), Henry being shown to have an uncle (his father was an only child), not to mention the depictions of tarmac drives, 17th Century carriages, radiators, the Venus de Milo in one of Henry's gardens, flintlock pistols - oh the list goes on.....

If you approach it from the point of view as it being a drama based on history many of the mistakes don't really matter, but it is a shame that they didn't believe the audience could distinguish between a sister and a daughter with the same name. Maybe they will decide to start a new stand alone series about Henry's heirs - who knows ?

I am looking forward to seeing what they do with The Borgias though.

The show's writer put it best, as was quoted in the Saturday Times:
'Showtime commissioned me to write an entertainment, not history.' Wink

AngelHMum · 21/02/2011 22:09

They certainly fulfilled the brief to entertain didn't they expat ?

expatinscotland · 21/02/2011 22:10

:o, Angel.

Gets good ratings, so writer gets good pay. That's how it works!

AngelHMum · 21/02/2011 22:15

And here we are talking about it to boot Grin

tiredemma · 22/02/2011 16:25

It may not be 100% accurate, however for myself it has had me sitting watching with my laptop right next to me- when I see something I want to learn more about (for example, the demise of Thomas Cromwell, Wolsey etc)- I am tapping away learning more about it.

I have to say that this programme has made me fascinated with the 'Tudor' era and has certainly encouraged me to educate myself more about this period.

And salivating over JRM and HC is not such a chore either.

Thanks for the recommendations for other books also (Alison Weir etc)

I love it and like tiredmma have also been inspired to find out more about the characters.
