the mother would be (ahem) fine in a siege situation.
(says the Vast and Serene heavily pregnant woman).
so that's Fern - she nice isn't she? never seen her before

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 12:28

I love Philip and Fern

Those of you with 4 or 6 year olds what would you think if a boy from your DD or DS class came to play and taklked about smoking

and saying he went to play rugby so he could get the boy up the road off the team ---- BULLY

could you seriously not smell smoke on your child if you smoked yourself? I find that hard to believe.

I don't know what being a single parent has to do with it either.

It's the culture of 'its not my fault'

winnie · 13/10/2005 12:56

At the age of four where did he get the cigerettes from? And how did he possibly get to smoke without her knowing? I am sorry but this infuriates me. Whatever she looks like and whatever she says on tv she does need to accept some level of responsibility. I loathe this culture that makes "celebrities" out of people for such things. Her saying she is a single mother is irrelevant and only adds to the fuel of sh*te thrown at single mothers. AAAaaarghhh!

Caligula · 13/10/2005 13:19

Well quite. I'm a single mother too but if my ds (6) smoked, I'd be too gobsmacked to even be angry about it.

I'd shop the shopkeeper though, or the adult who bought him the fags.

Must watch that programme tonight!

charliebat · 13/10/2005 13:20

What a stupid arse she was, even though she looked a sight lot more respecatble than me.
Someone needs to do something. That kids gonna die of cancer all because his mother was too f*ing stupid to say No you are not doing that.

I have not smoked nearly 10,000 fags since quitting. Hardest thing I have ever achieved. Poor Boy Stupid Mother.

doormat · 13/10/2005 13:22

no I wouldnt
when they hit their 12-13 angry, I am gonna fight the world stage, then I discourage it

agree with winnie that this sort of sh*te nearly always got to do with single parents, they need to find better researchers to stop singling them out, as I am sure this might be happening in 2 parent families

WigWamBam · 13/10/2005 13:23

It was his older sister who bought the cigarettes for him. He's not the only child in the house who was smoking - just the youngest (she's not that much older than him).

Caligula · 13/10/2005 13:29

I think shopkeepers who sell single cigarettes to school age children should be slammed with such enormous fines that it threatens their livelihood. They're the ones who keep smoking going, because adults on the whole, don't start smoking. If you get to your late teens without starting, the chances of starting are still there, but they're much lower. And most children don't get enough pocket money to buy a whole packet of fags and anyway, the psychologic aspect of handing over a fiver for a packet, rather than however much they charge for a single nowadays, would also be a powerful de-motivator. Shopkeepers who sell kids fags are a public nuisance (and should probably lose their licence to sell fags, if such a thing exists).

Caligula · 13/10/2005 13:30

sorry psychological

doormat · 13/10/2005 13:31

caligula I agree and with alcohol also, they should be closed down
as for ciggies there are alot of duty free going around, you can always find a house which sells ciggies

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 13:53

IIRC there was someone in his estate that was selling them to him £2.50 for 20 I think it was

OP posts:
Caligula · 13/10/2005 13:57

Is that legal?

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 14:00

No but is like drug pushers if I am understanding it correctly

OP posts:
doormat · 13/10/2005 14:01

no I dont think it is legal as when you collect your duty free, they are for personal use only, or so I have heard

Caligula · 13/10/2005 14:20

Well I hope that person on the estate has been hauled up before the beak.

Caligula · 13/10/2005 14:20

Bet he hasn't though

edam · 13/10/2005 14:26

Trading standards departments employ children as researchers to go into newsagents and attempt to buy cigarettes. So they can prosecute shops who sell to kids. If you suspect a shop near you is doing this, call Trading standards and complain (via your council).

Kidstrack2 · 13/10/2005 14:27

Not read all thread but they were on Honey We are Killing The Kids, very shocking I know! Anyway my mum found my brother smoking at 14 and she gave him money to go and buy a 20pk of ciggies(the delight on his face) and bring them back to her and he could smoke them, she lit it up for him and said here smoke it, once he had finished she lit another and gave it to him smoke that too if you are a smoker she told him he did and then she lit another and another and another made him smoke them until yes he was violently sick all over the lounge, he was crying and choking and in a very bad mess, my mum then explained to him this would be the sorry state he would get into when he was an older man, he has never smoked since. I don't agree with what my mum done think it should have been handled total different way but found out she done this as my gran had done same to her.

doormat · 13/10/2005 14:40

edam yes but in our area they advertise the fact they are going to do this in local rag
huh???
I remember being warned when I was a barmaid to look out for kids coming in as trading standards were around ( I never served anyone under 18)
