It was very good, missed the end as fell asleep (no relection) so will be catching up today. Very funny and yes he was spot on, face and voice!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/01/2011 09:40

It was great. DH and I were going to record it, but we started watching it and ended up seeing it to the end.
Vic Reeves was very good as EM's father.

jonicomelately · 02/01/2011 09:41

T'was brilliant.

purepurple · 02/01/2011 09:43

I really enjoyed it. I agree thet the actor had Eric spot on. I was surprised to see that some of it was filmed in my town, St Annes on Sea i.e. the pier and the sand dunes. Vic Reeves was really good, as was Victoria Wood. Ernie's dad was Mr Jelly in Pyschoville.
As it finished I did turn to DH and say "So they just used the same jokes for the next 30 years then?"

sunfunandmum · 02/01/2011 09:44

It was fantastic, I agree. Best festive telly I have seen this year. The Victoria Wood effect, total quality, brings out the best in everyone.

SlartyBartFast · 02/01/2011 09:45

helped by the fact that we know it had a happy ending Smile and i agree- recognising the jokes from their show, the curtain trick and the slapping Grin

I'm glad someone started a thread on this!I thought it was really good - the guy playing Eric was excellent but Ernie was really good too - harder to do as it's less of an 'impression' and less easily recognisable iyswim.

I am a huge fan of Eric and Ernie very so was very happy to see this (and now I know where it was filmed (thanks purepurple!)

best comedy sketch ever!
purepurple · 02/01/2011 09:58

Not sure where the house with the sea view was filmed but some of it was filmed in St Annes and some of it in Morecombe.
Morecombe has a statue of Eric Morecombe here

MavisGrind · 02/01/2011 10:02

Ahh, I live not that far from Morecambe so have dutifully been and made my dc have their pictures taken in front of it! DS1, age 4, also recognises Eric and Ernie too, not that I've been trawling through Youtube with him, oh no siree!

purepurple · 02/01/2011 10:06

Mavis, have you been to St Annes and had your photo taken with Les Dawson here in St Annes?

MavisGrind · 02/01/2011 10:08

No I haven't - perhaps that could my new hobby for 2011, taking photo's of my children in front of statues of comedians (a pretty niche hobby I will admit!)

purepurple · 02/01/2011 10:15

Good idea, mavis, hours of fun there.
The only statue I have ever taken photos of my Dc at is this one in New Zealand

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/01/2011 10:16

Me and DD are moving back to England later this year. I will definitely be taking her to Morcambe and St. Annes. She adores the seaside and the sands look lovely.
I thought it was probably Formby it was filmed at.

jonicomelately · 02/01/2011 11:17

St Annes and Lytham are lovely places with great beaches.
I didn't recognise Formby in it.

purepurple · 02/01/2011 11:33

St Annes is a lovely palce to live. We have one of the best beaches, it is all sand, as the sea hardly ever comes in. It is also very quiet as everyone is 2 miles down the road at Blackpool (more fool them).

SlartyBartFast · 02/01/2011 11:51

what happened to ernie seeing his family?

did they disown him, does anyone know,a fter he got through and not his father?

Lovely programme but was shocked to realise from the 'behind the scenes' thing afterwards Eric Morecombe died so long ago. I've seen so much Morecombe and Wise I thought they'd been going far longer - must have been endless repeats.

Amused me to see the drum kit with the Harpenden Hotshots sign - I had no idea he'd ever referenced the town where he lived as an adult (and where I live now). Harpenden isn't famous for anything - must be the only place in this country that didn't spawn another town of the same name overseas during the days of Empire. So nice to see Eric gave it a mention!

wintera · 02/01/2011 12:29

So glad to see someone has started a thread on this. It was a fantastic piece of tele. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Vic Reeves (or Jim Moir as he was credited) was a bit of a revelation I thought.

Felt so sorry for young Ernie though. He was left to fend for himself at such a young age. The locations used were lovely too. Made Morecambe and its surrounding areas look very picturesque I must say.

Please excuse the name dropping but I met Ernie Wise when I was a kid and he was absoutely lovely to me, my Dad and my Mum. He was a real hero of my Dad's so it was a really big deal to meet him. We met him in 1985 so it was a year after Eric died. I remember that he got a bit emotional talking about him. Anyway, he was as lovely as I would have imagined to be!

pinkhyena · 02/01/2011 13:02

It was brilliant I thought. I'm a massive M&W fan so was really pleased to see they got them spot on, I was so impressed. It's made me want to watch the shows again now!

EarthMotherImNot · 02/01/2011 13:15

I missed this but have just read on a web site I visit from time time all about my home town that so far into the programme a poster can be seen on a pub wall advertising a play held in said home town.

Small world ehSmile

wintera · 02/01/2011 14:30

Did you all see the preview for the show about Hattie Jacques? By the looks of it she had a very interesting private life! Think I spotted Aidan Turner as the loverboy too.

scrappydappydoo · 02/01/2011 14:40

We saw this and loved it - I thought the casting of all the erics and ernies was great - I almost started crying when ernie said that he would rather have his best friend than an act.. Best thing on telly this christmas I think.

piratecatClaus · 02/01/2011 15:42

i really enjoyed it, so glad i stayed up, then i watched the making of it aswell!

The guy who played Eric Morecombe was Daniel Rigby, he really was spot on, and apparently spent hours studying Eric.

Vic Reeves aka Jim Moir is a huge Eric Morecombe fan.

pranma · 02/01/2011 17:49

I thought it was the best thing I have seen on tv for a very very long time

TigerseyeMum · 02/01/2011 18:07

Watching it now Grin
