Eastenders Baby Death Storyline

Once again, no one can live happily ever after Sad

Ronnie's baby James, dies and she puts his body in Kat and Alfies son's crib, and steals their baby boy, Tommy.

Why oh why oh why do scriptwriters insist on portraying bereaved parents - mothers especially - as mad and deranged??? Maybe it's because they can't begin to imagine how awful the death of a child is, but really, whilst we are mad with grief, it is our own child that we want back, not someone else's stolen child. When are scriptwriters ever going to understand that?

Still, it'll be a riveting watch, no doubt.

Nor me Dee. Pathetic really. You'd think that they would want to apologise at the very least.

StayingFatherChristmasGirl · 05/01/2011 11:47

It is reported in the Times today that a woman who found her 5 month old daughter dead, called the paramedics and handed them the baby before jumping to her death from her towerblock flat balcony. No suggestion that she tried to substitute another woman's baby for hers.

Mouseface · 05/01/2011 12:06

Oh God, poor woman. Sad

deemented · 05/01/2011 12:12

Jesus, how awful. That poor woman Sad

That is truly awful Sad

There is a thread on NMs about this issue. Its simlar but the one that dont agree its a problem tend to be ruder and shout more.

At least on here there is a certain degree of sensitivity even from those who fell we are making a fuss.

I have found it all a bit depressing TBH. I logged on today to find a message from a member. She had taken the time to tell me that she had intially felt people were being stupid about 'just a soap'. She thought it was ridiculous to get so upstet about it. But after reading some of my comments she had began to think about how upseting the depiction of bereaved parents must be for us to see and she had changed her mind.

I am not posting this to boast about how articulate I am. I wanted to tell you because I think it illustrates that it IS worth talking about how we feel and that some people do listen.

It has given me such a boost.

Mouseface · 05/01/2011 13:33

Smile MrsDeVere how lovely.

gregssausageroll · 05/01/2011 13:40

That was in Glasgow staying. It was on the news yesterday. She jumped from the same window her brother jumped from 10 months prior. He hit grass and survived. She didn't

Emjxxx · 05/01/2011 16:19

MrsDeVere you deserve a very much deserved boost, you words have been very articulate emotional and from the heart.

BY the way has anyone seen that Anne Diamond has added her opinion to this subject and has been quoted as saying she is horrified by it. I'm not sure if she or the organisations will take any further action. Lets hope she does get behind it.

HereMeRoar · 05/01/2011 17:23

Anne Diamond on Eastenders in the Sun. 1700 lives a year saved by the Back to Sleep campaign Shock. Wow, I had no idea it was so many.

HereMeRoar · 05/01/2011 17:26

Had she checked her email, of course, she would have known before it was screened. See here.

travellingwilbury · 05/01/2011 18:09

I have just read that and there is at least one person on there who believes this could and would happen in real life so I do think this is still a fight worth fighting .

LillianGish · 05/01/2011 18:15

It is a terrible storyline - hard to watch even if you haven't suffered a bereavement yourself, unimaginable you'd even think of tuning if you had. Not realistic, but when has EE ever been realistic? Phil's crack addiction anyone? His son trotting off to prison and returning as an entirely different person (literally). You could trawl the archives and come up with any number of unrealistic scenarios - it's a soap opera not a documentary. Don't watch it - in fact don't watch any soap operas and certainly don't expect them to be an accurate representation of real life. I'd be willing to bet there are few storylines that haven't enraged someone with their innaccuracies - it just depends where your sensibilities and specialisms lie. My heart goes out to all Mumsnetters who have suffered a cot death. Vote with your feet (or should that be hands) - reach for the off switch.

TigerseyeMum · 05/01/2011 18:58

Good for Anne but there are still people who stubbornly think this is 'realistic' - though I think it is the same person who commented the same thing on a Sun article I read yesterday - I guess some people hold on to their convictions despite lack of evidence given to them by people who know better.

MsKLo · 05/01/2011 19:05

Anne Diamond has been instrumental in the back to sleep campaign and has made a real difference with her commitment to the cause. She is an amazing woman!

I heard today that the story will last two years? Please no?!

MsKLo · 05/01/2011 19:07

Also can you believe their ratings were up to 11 million for Monday's episode - how depressing, I want people to boycott it and more people are watching it!

Mouseface · 05/01/2011 19:49

My GP lost his son to cot death. He has campaigned tirelessly for years to raise awareness of using the Back to Sleep technique and helping raise money for FSIDS.

LillianGish · 05/01/2011 19:55

Unfortunately there is no such thing as bad publicity - kicking up a huge stink will only have the effect of encouraging more people to tune in to see what all the fuss is about.

\link{http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/soaps/3332713/Baby-swap-plot-doesnt-hurt-EastEnders-ratings.html\complaints having the opposite effect}

Seriously - switch it off, there's no way you can win this one.

3500 complaints vs an extra million viewers - that equates to 300 extra viewers for every one complaint.

It is hideous. And hopefully those that get why it's so horrible have switched it off already.

But there is only heartache and frustration to be gained by keeping this up - the complaints aren't changing anything - they're just increasing EE's viewing figures (no such thing as bad publicity and all that).

Lalouba · 05/01/2011 22:46

According to my OH, he saw an interview in which they said they want to drag this story out for up to TEN YEARS or for as long as the included actors/actresses are still in the programme.

:(

ThatVikRinA22 · 05/01/2011 22:49

never watched EE (well not in about 15 years!) but this is beyond the pale.

MsKLo · 05/01/2011 22:49

Fucking stupid writers

I am never watchin it again if they do that and I have no respect for any of the actors involved. If I was them I would rather leave the show than do this story

I am so mad!

confuddledDOTcom · 06/01/2011 00:00

Thanks, swallowedAfly, glad it?s not just me. Yes I?ve noticed her personality but not her mental health.

?she has been scripted and characterised as an unhinged flake.?

Whilst I don?t appreciate your description you are describing her personality, not her mental health. Next evidence?

Rockbird · 06/01/2011 00:34

The Sun are reporting that Samantha Womack has quit over the storyline. Believe what you will...

beachholiday · 06/01/2011 01:04

I hope thats true and good on her if it is.
